Home Depot Forgot They Promised To Hang Onto My Rug Until I Decided If I'd Exchange It Or Not, Refuses Refund
By Mary Beth Quirk on January 6, 2012 2:00 PM
Marc knew for a fact that he didn't want to keep the rug he and his wife bought from Home Depot, so he was pleased when an employee was helpful enough to suggest they wait on a refund in case a new shipment had any rugs they'd like. He even offered to hang onto the rug, instead of lugging it back and forth. Unfortunately, the employee's memory wasn't so good. More Â»

E-Mail To Home Depot CEO Resolves Month-Old Problem In 12 Hours
By Chris Morran on December 16, 2011 3:15 PM
Consumerist reader Jim was feeling a little frustrated with Home Depot. He'd ordered some parts online for his chainsaw, only to find that one of the two boxes was completely empty. This was just the beginning of a month of misleading assurances, conflicting instructions and overall dissatisfaction for Jim. That is, until he penned an e-mail to Home Depot's CEO. More Â»

Knife Printed With 'USA Quality Guarantee' Is, Of Course, Made In China
By Laura Northrup on December 14, 2011 1:30 PM

Think quickly: if you saw the "USA Quality Guarantee" seal on a product you found in a store, where would you assume that it had been manufactured? If you guessed "China," you're an awfully cynical person. You are, however, correct.

Reader Stuart, who writes a blog about tools, noticed this little badge of dishonor on a knife for sale at Home Depot. If it's not meant to make customers think that the knife was made in the USA, then are the words just for decoration?  More Â»

Home Depot Staff Makes 8-Hour Trip To Find Me A Snow Blower
By Chris Morran on December 2, 2011 2:15 PM
Consumerist reader Matt and his wife recently went to Home Depot to try to purchase a snow blower for the coming winter. But that Halloween weekend snow storm apparently caused an early run on the machines and no one could give them a clear answer on exactly when they would be back in stock. More Â»

Home Depot Increases Sales By Moving Office Staff To Sales Floor
By Marc Perton on November 15, 2011 12:45 PM
Home Depot has finally found a use for your pointy-haired boss — they made him a sales person. The leading home improvement chain has boosted sales by shifting some employees from the back-office to the sales floor. The red staplers will be lonely, but the customers are buying more items per trip. More Â»

Home Depot Tells Me I'll Be Able To Return Unused Generator, Changes Mind After Hurricane
By Chris Morran on August 30, 2011 11:30 AM
Hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowe's stand to rake in a nice pile of cash from hurricane-related sales. And according to one Consumerist reader, his local Home Depot intends on keeping as much of that cash as possible by not making good on its pre-storm promises. More Â»

Home Depot, Starbucks To Make A Pile Of Post-Hurricane Cash
By Chris Morran on August 29, 2011 2:27 PM
Reports state that Hurricane Irene could have done anywhere from $3 billion to $10 billion in damage during her brief trip up the East Coast. That's a lot of plywood, nails, plaster and everything else that will be needed for repair. It's also a lot of coffee for beleaguered consumers. More Â»

Consumerist Techniques Land Reader Free Home Depot Tools
By Ben Popken on August 17, 2011 2:00 PM
Andrew stared at the row of tools on the shelf at Home Depot and sighed. He had a big new job to do, but after getting all his tools from Home Depot for the past 20 years, there was but a paltry selection. No open stock items and the sets were incomplete. He wouldn't be able to get all the tools he needed. So, drawing on what he'd learned from reading Consumerist, rather than an EECB, he crafted an email to a specific person at Home Depot corporate he thought might help. More Â»

Shoppers Hoarding Incandescent Light Bulbs As New Regulations Loom
By Chris Morran on August 8, 2011 12:30 PM
It's been nearly four years since Congress voted to phase out low-efficiency incadescent light bulbs, but fans of the bright lights still have a few months before the regulations begin kicking in. And judging by sales numbers, it looks like consumers are snatching up incadescents before they fade away. More Â»

The 8 Largest U.S. Retailers With The Worst Sales
By Chris Morran on August 2, 2011 12:45 PM
If we'd told you 10 years ago that Borders and Circuit City would vanish off the face of the planet and Blockbuster Video would be auctioned off to a satellite TV provider for pocket change, many people would have expressed disbelief. But those once-great stores have had their heyday in history, so now it's time to look into the magic 8 ball to see if doom lies ahead for other major retailers. More Â»

After The Storm: Shop At Home Depot, Eat At Waffle House
By Marc Perton on July 12, 2011 5:00 PM
Which retailers are best at preparing for major disasters? According to some experts, big-box chains like Home Depot and Lowe's earn high marks for responding rapidly to blizzards, tornadoes and hurricanes. Then there's Waffle House, which FEMA administrator W. Craig Fugate cites as being one of the indicators he uses to determine whether a community has recovered from a disaster: If the restaurant is open and serving a full menu, things are okay. More Â»

By Phil Villarreal on June 27, 2011 8:45 AM
Home Depot is taking legal heat for possibly violating the Buy American Act of 1933, which requires that materials used to build public construction products come from the U.S. The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the company due to accusations that it purchases products from China and other foreign countries, and offers those products to government agencies online. Video Of Home Depot Easy Button Ripoff In Action
By Ben Popken on March 24, 2011 12:00 PM
Reader Ed went back to Home Depot and took a video of that Home Depot ripoff of the Staple's "Easy Button" getting pressed. The mechanized voice released from inside says, "Don't see the product you want you want on our displays? The Home Depot can still provide it! Ask an associate to set up a CFP to locate the product you want!" That's a lot more words than when you push the original button, which says, "That was Easy." Nice job, big orange, you steal someone else's idea and then totally ruin the whole concept by adding a bunch of extra marketing language. More Â»

Big Box Stores Pushing To Tax Amazon Sales Nationwide
By Chris Morran on March 18, 2011 4:30 PM
In recent years, retailers have been successful in getting a handful of states, including Illinois and New York, to pass laws requiring Amazon.com and similar e-tailers to collect sales tax on products shipped to those states. Now, with the backing of super-sized chains, there is a full-on push to get these laws on the books in every state that collects sales tax. More Â»

Home Depot Rips Off Staples Easy Button
By Ben Popken on March 14, 2011 12:00 PM
At least one Home Depot has been so inspired by Staples "Easy Button" that they came up with their own knockoff. Reader Ed sent in this photo of one of these buttons he spotted in his local Home Depot on the desk in the flooring department. When I first saw the picture, I thought that when you pushed it a giant mechanical hand would grab one of the experienced retired contractors who Home Depot fired and replaced with cheaper labor and drop him in front of you. Sadly, the reality is, as usual, much more mundane than my fevered imaginings. More Â»

Alleged Shoplifter Stabs Home Depot Employee With Scissors, Flees At 100 MPH
By Laura Northrup on February 24, 2011 9:30 AM
When an alleged shoplifter was caught at a New Hampshire Home Depot store, loss prevention staff brought him to the front office to speak with him, which is the normal procedure. As police put it, though, "the subject became agitated" and fled the store: stabbing an employee in the hand with a pair of scissors, and losing police in a high-speed chase that apparently reached 100 MPH. Home Depot Employee Makes Good On Delivery With His Own Vehicle
By Mary Beth Quirk on February 7, 2011 11:15 AM

Home Depot Lovers Keep Spamming Comments On My Blog

Corporate guerrilla marketing efforts are getting more sophisticated, as well as more annoying. This Home Depot Banner Upsets Customers For Some Reason
By Chris Walters on July 20, 2010 9:32 AM
What do you think of when you think of Home Depot? Planes from a nearby airport crashing into the building, of course, which is obviously why this Home Depot in Farmingdale, NY put up such a creative felt banner. The person who shot the photo and posted it to NYCAviation last Friday says that when he asked to see a manager the sales associate responded, "What kind of manager?" You know, the store manager or the incendiary felt banner manager, because there's both. More Â»

Ames True Temper Replaces Broken Decade-Old Shovel
By Laura Northrup on June 16, 2010 12:30 PM
As consumers in modern America, we often cynically assume that "Lifetime Guarantee" is just a something companies slap on products with no basis in fact, like "New and Improved!" or "With Calcium." But there are companies who take the lifetime warranty concept seriously, and will replace a ten-year-old shovel after its handle breaks just as garden season begins. Matt discovered that a shovel he picked up at Home Depot a decade ago carried such a guarantee...and the company replaced his broken shovel even though all proof of purchase was long gone. More Â»

Home Depot Called "Arrogant," Must Actually Pay Inventor For Invention
By Laura Northrup on May 12, 2010 10:00 AM
Home Depot had a problem: their employees kept sawing off their own extremities with the saws they used to cut lumber for customers. Michael Powell invented a gadget which fixed the problem, and offered to sell the device to the chain for $2,000 each. Then, the inventor's lawsuit alleged, Home Depot simply stole the gadget's design, made their own, and wouldn't compensate him. "F*** Michael Powell. Let him sue us." one executive said at the time. Now the chain must pay him a judgment of about $25 million. More Â»

J.C. Penney and Home Depot Discover Strange New Concept Called "Customer Service"
By Chris Walters on April 20, 2010 11:21 AM
Whaaaaa? The Wall Street Journal says J.C. Penney and Home Depot have been investing in better customer service training, because apparently some egghead thinks it might increase sales. Penney started it back over the holiday shopping season, by giving cash bonuses to employees who improved their customer service scores. Home Depot should be rolling out some new improved customer interaction this month, where cashiers will ask if you found everything you needed and will call up the right department on your behalf if you didn't. Consumer Reports Says It Doesn't Pay To Buy Cheap Paint
By Meg Marco on June 3, 2008 7:28 PM
Our friends at Consumer Reports tell us that even though the price of exterior paints and stains has gone up a few dollars per gallon on average from last year (due to price hikes for many of the petrochemicals that go into paint), big box stores are keeping consumers isolated from manufacturers who would love to be passing on those added costs. It may be tempting to cut costs by buying a lower quality product, but CR warns against using crappy paint. Specifically, CR suggested Behr (sold at Home Depot), Valspar (Lowe’s), and Kilz (Wal-Mart) as competitively priced paints that "ranked among the top performers."  More Â»

Home Depot Revamps Customer Service: "We are not to let a customer go untouched."
By Carey Alexander on February 21, 2007 11:45 PM

—>New Home Depot CEO Frank "Li'l Franky" Blake is making customer service "his No. 1 priority," according to the Wall Street Journal. Blake took the reigns after the resignation of Robert "Big Bob" Nardelli. Describing the renewed focus, one Texas manager said, "We are not to let a customer go untouched."

Mr. Blake repeatedly has told managers that the stores will be liberated from many of the time-consuming, mind-numbing tasks the home office required them to do over the past six years. Under Mr. Nardelli, stores had to measure everything from how many pallets were removed from a truck per hour to how many extended warranties each employee sold per week.
Fewer mind-numbing tasks may allow increased face-time with customers, which for Home Depot, may not be a good thing. For starters, they can focus on hiring people who don't abuse customers, but do know the products they're trying to sell.  More Â»

The 2006 Deloitte report on gift cards is out, and it's official. Gift cards are the single most popular gift this holiday season. But are they a good buy? Sort of. It seems that due to consumer pressure, and FTC pressure, stores are improving their customer service/disclosure of fees when it comes to gift cards. But that doesn't meant there aren't still a lot of problems. The Montgomery County, Maryland, Office of Consumer Protection which assesses dozens of cards annually, has released their 2006 report. The report evaluates 40 different gift cards, looking for things like whether or not the card can be replaced if lost or stolen, whether the cards have an expiration date, and whether fees are assessed to the card's balance. Basically, you want to avoid the following cards:  More Â»

• Ah, this is great, the wife of a Marriot employee, a smoker herself, chimes in on the hotel's smoking ban. If only she didn't have to say, "If a person wants to kill themselves they should bring innocent people down with them." [HotelChatterMore Â»

Free Valve Prevents Hammond Customer From Blowing A Gasket
By consumerist.com on May 5, 2006 4:15 AM

I know you folks prefer complaints, but here's a gold star for a firm: With the likelihood of hard freezes gone, I went to start up our lawn's sprinkler system again. There is also some question as to whether or not a Scooba owner will be tied to purchasing only the Clorox-branded cleaning solution, or if something can be whipped up at home. But still, new robot! Coupon code JANCLEAR takes off $25.  More Â»
