460 calories is actually not so bad for lunch, but then you add the drink and the fries (does KFC do fries? I don't know), and it gets a lot worse. The fat content is pretty ridiculous as it is, and the 1430 mg of sodium is more than half the recommended daily maximum.

They do a side, typically Potato Wedges (about 240 calories in the individual size) plus a medium drink that comes with a meal.
If you sub for mashed potatoes it's not so bad (130 calories with gravy). But this is fast food... No matter what you're taking the hit.

Well I'd say it is because many, in not most, men find women with some stereotypically masculine traits attactive and I would imagine that a tripple baconator is considered to be a manly meal. Yes, it is high fat and sodium, but it is still not brutal. Add 2 sides, mashed potatoes and gravy and Green beans plus a biscuit and you are at 860 calories. not too bad for a fast food lunch.

I thought the usual was 2,000-2,500 calories a day, am I wonrg? you eat this thing and just get a drink and you can eat fairly normal foods for the rest of the day.
And some of us are more in the 3K to 3.5K/day range to maintain weight. So for us, it's not that bad.
It depends on your size. I eat about 1,100 calories a day, and that's on the low end of what's recommended for a woman of my height. Generally, the smaller (thinner/shorter) you are, the fewer calories you require. If you're extremely active, you'll require more calories because you're burning them faster.
It doesn't look that good to me. Plus I'm about a month into eating healthy and feeling great. Maybe if it was just a single piece of chicken in bread then it might be more appealing.

That's exactly what I thought. Cheese, bacon and the fried chicken? They must be fairly small pieces of chicken. Larger than your standard nugget, but not the size you'd see on a sandwich.

Is the sodium that bad? There isn't one here in SW Hell, but I have a Subway, McDonalds and Potbellys nearby. Compare:
McDonalds - Angus Deluxe standard (750 calories, 1700 mg sodium)
Potbelly - Regular Roast Beef w/ Provolone, Mustard, LTO, Hot Peppers, Pickles (550, 2233)
Subway - 6in Roast Beef on wheat w/ Provolone, LTO, Green Peppers, Cucumber, Deli Mustard (370, 1080)
Is 540, 1380 really that bad in the fast food world? the fat is a bit of a problem, but beyond that, it really isn't that different from anything else. And unlike the above three, it has bacon - and we know that many people would willingly sacrifice themselves to Cthulhu for bacon.

Is potbelly's any good? There is one about 10 minutes from my house, but, I've never eaten there...
That amount of sodium by itself isn't such a big deal but that's one meal. Add a side and the sodium level goes up. Plus, there's whatever a person eats for the other meals. Considering the original recipe one is nearly half your daily recommended maximum for sodium, a lot of people are in danger of getting too much because you should never ingest so much sodium as to hit the recommended limits.
Certainly it isn't healthy, but presenting the numbers on their own doesn't give a full picture. Relative to competitors, the offering just isn't that bad. Even the sodium levels are within a reasonable range of the options that I have near work, except for Potbelly (whose sodium levels are outrageous).

This really isn't a whole lot different than, say, a chicken cordon bleu served on a plate. Many people have been eating those kinds of meals for a long time. It just looks like a heart-attack-inducing monstrosity when it's put together like a sandwich.

We food scientist are a rare breed. We will test any food (scientifically, of course) no matter how delicious, or how full of fat derived flavor is in it. GuidedByLemons: You're wrong. Sodium, along with other electrolytes (such as potassium, magnesium, calcium), have a specific range. Go too far outside those numbers, and some really bad things happen. In the case of sodium, if you take in more than you excrete, your blood and tissue sodium goes high. Where sodium goes, water goes. When you push too much water into the blood stream, volume goes up... in other words increase fluids but keep capacity the same, and the pressure MUST go up. Result is hypertension. AHA says one in three adults has hypertension. HTN is a strong risk factor for cardiovascular disease, one of the top killers of adult Americans.

KFC is claiming 540 calories. Other sources (Google \"double down\") are saying more like 1250 calories. Fat RDA for women is 70 grams, for men about 90 grams. Sodium RDA is a small tsp. -- 2400 mg. in USA, and in the UK it's 1600 mg.

I was fortunate enough to swing by a KFC earlier this week to grab a Double Down... and yet live to tell the tale.
I'm a young guy. And I'm in good shape. I've spent the past 10 years+ obsessing over health and using my body as a guinea pig to try everything in the hopes of reaching the apex of health. I've settled into a lifestyle that provides the maximum amount of health results for the minimum amount of effort and have found that a lot of the mainstream health and fitness advice is counterproductive at best and harmful at worst.
Yes, this sandwich is damned delicious. Salty chicken, salty bacon, and salty cheese, wow. KFC are geniuses at figuring out what our innate instant gratification hot buttons are and pushing them with this delicious sandwich. Do I advocate eating this every day? No. But KFC isn't forcing it down our throats either. It's important to take responsibility for your own outcomes, even if others are trying to persuade you to do something against your best interests.
And stop worrying about all the meat in this thing. Humans have been eating meat for millions of years and have thrived on it. Saturated fat, cholesterol, protein, et. al. are not the demons that our vegetarian-leaning society claim them to be. Low-fat condiments, processed vegetable oils, and a host of other frankenfoods our society holds up as the pinnacle of healthy foods are going to do you more harm than this sandwich will.
So my advice is to try this bad boy out. Life is short and too many people are letting it fly by without enjoying it. Just don't pull a Don Gorske and eat several every day. Vegetables are almost as important as meat.

High corporate officers need to justify their existence in the hierarchy. Personally, I think all the sandwich combinations, promos, and whatnot have already been done and tried. Why does a food chain need a CEO et al? Why can't food chains operate in a communitarian sort of way, alas the open source of food? Why can't a few restaurant owners agree to a common menu?
The Double Down is actually a pretty darn good sandwich. Although I'm not a huge fan of the Colonel's special sauce the pepper jack cheese gives it a little kick that I really enjoy. This is also the kind of eat on-the-go food item that would go over great at fairs and carnivals. I think a nice twist on this would be replacing the bacon & pepper jack with swiss and mushrooms.
