It does happen sometimes, especially with elderly drivers, but also with distracted drivers.</p><p>I have one of the recalled cars. I've had no problems and had the recall fix done anyway. Husband encourages me to trade in the car for a different brand, but it's only one year old and I'd lose sooooo much money if I did that. I'm torn. </p><p>I know a guy at the office who just sold his toyota and his wife's toyota, because they are both freaked out abou the recalls. One of their models was not even a recalled model. However, maybe they were thinking of getting new cars sometimes soon, and it's a convenient excuse to splurge. :-)</p><p>Mine though, I just bought the damned thing! The over-sensationalisation of this on the news is really causing people to over-think this. Yes, Toyota effed up. BIG TIME. Yes, this is dangerous and people have died and Toyota is 100% to blame. BUT it shouldn’t send people into a panic about driving their car. I’m willing to bet that the people that are claiming the problems persist on a “repaired” car are psyching themselves into a panic. They have such a fear and anxiety that it’ll happen again that it’s causing them to hit the accelerator instead of the brake, like the senior citizen example that you gave. In fact, there’s probably going to be a spike in “unitended acceleration” across ALL car brands in the next few months. People are going to freak out and accidentally hit their gas pedals. Trust me. </p><p>People need to calm the hell down and learn how to deal with their machines. Just because you’re allowed to have one doesn’t mean you’ll be able to operate it properly. For instance, during these past few snowstorms in the NE, there have been a spike in people getting their hands mangled when trying to un-jam their snowblower. PEOPLE PLEASE. Calm down and think it through before you act. Grandpa did this many many years ago, before electronics were common as controls. He swore up and down that he was stepping on the brake, but the hole in the garage wall said otherwise. </p><p>People on cell phones or distracted by changing a CD, etc. may take their foot of one pedal to switch, and mistakenly put it back down on the same one. When it responds opposite of what they intended, they freak out and press it even harder, hoping it will \"work\", which worsens the situation.</p><p>I'm not saying that is definitely what happened here. But it is something that should be investigated. </p><p>In order to find the proper recall fix, they have to know if each case was driver error or vehicle malfunction. That can help them identify the causes. I'm sure not every one of these cases was vehicle malfunction, just as I'm sure not every one of them was driver error. It was only released because Toyota needed to put something ANYTHING out to get this into the 'fixed' column to calm people down.</p><p>There is no tension adjustment accomplished there and really no pedal adjustment. Its just a piece inserted into the pedal assembly. It's not really an issue of \"drive-by-wire\" systems  being a bad idea, it's more of an issue of manufacturers not installing adequate fail-safes for those systems. If Toyota made it so that you can kill acceleration by pressing the brake pedal, (like some other manufacturers have done), we wouldn't have this problem. </p><p>Braking should always override acceleration, and it's not that difficult to do. It's just that Toyota decided it wasn't worth the effort on their part. It's an example of corporate hubris if anything, methinks. I can remember throttle cables and throttle valves freezing or binding into a stuck open position. I own 2 2007 Altimas which have dodged a recent recall.  I guess I will go buy a couple old Camaro's.  Real gas pedals cables and linkage sure beat this computer controlled stuff.  Rochester 4 barrel carb with a chrome air cleaner sounds good when you put your foot in it.  Get a couple glass packs on without catalytic converters since we no longer have vehicle inspections.
