Firstly, internet search is being conducted mostly through a bar in the browser rather than visiting www.google.com, which would cause Google to lose nearly half of their page hits while maintaining the same number of visits. Secondly, the article does not define \"web traffic\" but if by web traffic we mean bandwidth, we are comparing Google's mostly plain text to Facebook's mostly images and videos. What if we measured other electronic goods by this measure? Movies would be thousands of times more important than music, which would be thousands of times more important than text. Thirdly, Google and Facebook serve entirely different purposes, and really are not competing with each other with their primary services (Google Buzz aside). No one stops using Google because they started using Facebook, and no one drops facebook when they discover search engines. The real message here is that Google is still popular like it used to be, and Facebook has become more popular than it used to be. I think this is another in the perennially popular and absurd \"X is going to kill Y!\" genre of articles.

Reply

Megalomania

March 16, 2010 10:54 AM

Moderate |Flag for review

I believe by \"web traffic\" it means page loads, not bandwidth. Meanwhile, they also added the 3rd party apps, which again take one click to do anything.

Raw traffic is meaningless - what's significant is repeat users, and i would imagine that although I've lost track of the number of fan pages my grandmother has sent me that promise free Farmville crap if you become a fan and recommend the page to all of your friend. I report every one of them to Facebook, and when I check back later they're still there.

Some scam pages promise things like free gift cards if you're one of the first XX,XXX to sign up, and they even have fake comment boxes on their front page (with fake comments).

Then there are the applications that are really persistent about spreading themselves. First I get the invites (from my grandmother), then when I block those they send me direct messages or post crap on my wall.
