Period. this is just the cost of the channel spread over every subscriber. If I dropped Lifetime along with 90% of other cable subscribers, you'd pay 10x the price AND the regular fees and charges for the cable service itself. In the end, after working for a cable company, the math really does work out. a la carte would also be more expensive because right now, they just pump things to people in blocks. individually assigning each channel is more work, and prices would go up. in the end, spreading the cost to everyone works out, since while maybe a few people could pay less, a huge number would see their bills get out of reach and they'd cancel or downgrade, impacting prices for others even more.</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20134246, 'Conformist138')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"reply-container\" > <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-20139333\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=1524429\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=1524429\">kujospam</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2010/03/list-of-subscriber-fees-shows-what-you-pay-for-channels-you-hate.html#comment-20139333\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2010-03-14T06:23:40-05:00\">March 14, 2010 6:23 AM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20139333);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20139333');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>Almost like health insurance...... hears grasshoppers.</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20139333, 'kujospam')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> </div> <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> </div> <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-20132285\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=1184865\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=1184865\">KeithIrwin</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2010/03/list-of-subscriber-fees-shows-what-you-pay-for-channels-you-hate.html#comment-20132285\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2010-03-10T00:23:27-05:00\">March 10, 2010 12:23 AM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20132285);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20132285');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>Right now I don't pay anything and don't get any cable channels. </p><p>my favorite TV channel Tech TV got canned years ago, but you know i am happier now than i was them, why? i can get the content made by the same people online, for less money, less hassle by going to that host website or blog or by getting their podcast. and you know what: the content, the shows, the interviews, are 1000000 times better because now they dont have to worry about pleasing execs and can just focus on ... yes... making good content. </p><p>i love PBS, Animal planet, discovery, and the like and would happily pay $30 a month JUST for those channels. yes it would be about what i am paying now for less channels, but thats the point, i dont WANT to support sports, fox news, reality tv or anything of the sort. honestly i would pay extra NOT to support those channels and have my money go to where it i want it to go. </p><p>why? because the quality would improve as i and others pay these channels what they are worth: a boatload more than .05¢ a month. </p><p>personally i dont care if that would make sports, or fox news more expensive, i dont watch it, i dont want to pay for it, i dont care for it. </p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20132847, 'KittensRCute!')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-20132491\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=306389\"><img src=\"/mt-static/support/assets_c/userpics/userpic-306389-100x100.png\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=306389\">PencilSharp</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2010/03/list-of-subscriber-fees-shows-what-you-pay-for-channels-you-hate.html#comment-20132491\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2010-03-10T09:36:34-05:00\">March 10, 2010 9:36 AM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20132491);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20132491');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>Hey, Jeff. Welcome to the Thunderdome!<br />I know that you can't speak for TWC, but I'd like to know your personal reaction to something that I've been pondering for a while:<br />I honestly think that, with services like Hulu and TiVo (feasibly) offering programming on demand via broadband connections, we could soon see the day where an online upstart offers a la carte channels, bypassing traditional CATV/SatTV, Customers might indeed pay a multiple (say, $10-12 for ESPN), but folks will vote with their dollars.<br />For example, I <i>don't</i> watch ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, ESPaNol, CrESPiN, or the Kreskin channel, although most do. Yet, about $6-10 a month from my TWC bill is going straight to ESPN/Disney's coffers...<br />Now, being a businessman, I greatly admire making people pay for things they don't or can't use (gym memberships, extra channels, Social Security/Medicare) <i>except</i> when I'm the one paying.<br />So, Jeff, (if you're still watching these comments) what do you think of a future where TWC serves merely as an ISP offering a utilitized backbone, while content providers move to internet distribution models?</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" Last I read some channels with a relatively low number of viewers will often collect a great deal of money from the cable company. More than far more popular channels because they allow the cable provider to run more of their own commercials. Thus the prices aren't determined just by consumer popularity, but value to the cable company. </p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20132079, 'duxup')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-20132059\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=64220\"><img src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-64220-100x100.png\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=64220\">bgrigson</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2010/03/list-of-subscriber-fees-shows-what-you-pay-for-channels-you-hate.html#comment-20132059\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2010-03-09T15:44:21-05:00\">March 9, 2010 3:44 PM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20132059);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20132059');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>If you watch only Lifetime then you clearly value that channel at the current price you pay so reducing your options while keeping your channel is completely fine. </p><p>This is a complex issue.Networks created channels because the could not because they should. Including the HD and music and PPV channels we've got over 1000 channels to trudge through, and sure we can go through and spend hours creating favorites lists that only show the channels we actually want, but every software update wipes that out and we have to start over. So if my bill stayed the same but I only got the channels I wanted I'd be perfectly happy. I hate sports and while sure on an individual basis the channels would get more expensive a la carte, *as a proportion of the bill* I'm paying a ridiculous amount for something I don't want. </p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20132023, 'rev_matt_y')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"reply-container\" > <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-20132814\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=1525631\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=1525631\">WagTheDog</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2010/03/list-of-subscriber-fees-shows-what-you-pay-for-channels-you-hate.html#comment-20132814\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2010-03-10T11:38:14-05:00\">March 10, 2010 11:38 AM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20132814);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20132814');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>I'd pay 1000x the rate in the table for the four channels I watch. If you are paying a content producer who should go out of business because they aren't adding value, you aren't paying a restaurant or a retailer that is adding value. It's the same reason we don't stimulate the economy by paying little kids to throw rocks through people's windows, thus forcing them to hire repairmen. The intent of TV is to make money, it is a business. If you want artistic vision and creative voices then look to PBS and other publicly funded options. With digital distribution if the story is that important to the indie then they will still make it available. TV doesn't make money if people never watch. And TNT (\"we know drama\" - no you don't; all you know is how to slice & dice a show to put in more commercials and display on-screen text so as to block whatever it is we're trying to watch) is definitely NOT worth $.99 wholesale. The question, though, is what are the cable & directv folks actually charging us to watch these things. I recall that a few years ago direct moved Fox Movie Channel to a higher tier. They really must be jacking up the price since here it shows as sixteen cents.<br />A sliver of sunshine in my case is that I canceled directv 2 months ago, since I couldn't afford it anymore. So I record to a vcr via my OTA connection. And some shows I watch online. Oh, I have to watch \"24\" later. The pricing for the A La Carte should be EXACTLY the same as we see it here. The channels are STILL selling advertising ad nauseum so they're making bucks. And as an aside, they should be able to sell their advertising for MORE because they'll know precisely how many subscribers they have, and because the subscribers asked for those channels they can be relatively certain that they're watching more frequently ---> higher advertising rates on the ole Nielsenmeter.</p><p>I for one one can't stand sports - I'm a geek and damn proud of it. I could EASILY save myself about $12/month if not more by going a la carte. All the sports, music, shopping, foreign language stuff, and a few others GONE...</p><p>Now that said - consider this: If you have net neutrality and a good speed internet connection - why is cable relevant? I'd be happy to pay SyFy their $0.22/month for their channel over the Net... If we had the option of cutting them out of our bill their revenue would drop just as much as any other channel that people didn't want. </p><p>To stay in business, a channel like ESPN would either have to increase their price to the point where the reduced number of subscribers would cover their costs, OR lower their price to the point where a larger number of people would be willing to pay for it and not complain. I suppose option 3 could be to discontinue the channel entirely.</p><p>I think in the end it would work out to the advantage of every consumer. People get only what they are willing to pay for. Niche channels like quilting or whatever surely would need to charge more, but the people who really want that are likely to pay more for it. Same thing applies to ESPN. </p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20132147, 'mikebw')\">Reply</a></div> <!-- if it's a top level category ' --> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (top level parent) --> </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\"> <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-20132151\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=70159\"><img src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-70159-100x100.png\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=70159\">xredgambit</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2010/03/list-of-subscriber-fees-shows-what-you-pay-for-channels-you-hate.html#comment-20132151\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2010-03-09T18:14:25-05:00\">March 9, 2010 6:14 PM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20132151);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20132151');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>I'm looking at $11 worth of channels I'd want to watch, and some I don't.<br />I'd be willing to go 3-4x the prices if I got the channels I want to watch. The cable company would charge you a lot more (per channel) than it costs to get that one channel ( kind of like they do now anyways) so they can afford to keep the channels that don't demand as much viewership. </p><p>This sounds kind of odd until you realize that the cable companies probably have to maintain a minimum number of subscribers before the costs of piping the signals from the studio becomes prohibitive. Let me commit to buying a minimum of fifteen of these channels (minus my local network affiliates, which I'll pull in free and in HD with an antenna). That's roughly $30, plus reasonable equipment fees and taxes--let's say my bill is $45. Much better than the $70+ I pay now. </p><p>If I want TNT, USA, ESPN, CNN, etc--I'll pay CableCo Incorporated a fair 'middle premium' price for them relative to HBO, Showtime, et. al. At the very least, putting aside exclusive/original programming, there are lower priced 'alternatives' for basic news and sports coverage, along with channels showing movies, reality shows, and some of my favorite broadcast TV reruns.</p><p>I know I've forgotten to account for multiple room usage and the real premium channels, but still.
