so you're still not making any money from the bank. Now, if you're taking money from the bank, than, yea. But in general, banks take money from their customers. I'm at a point now, where I watch every transaction so I don't incur any fees, that it's a wash. At least the bank isn't costing me anything. But if there's a way to make money from a bank, I'm all ears. I don't consider savings accounts or \"high yield\" CDs as making money from a bank. By your reasoning, no one is EVER making money. If I incur no fees and earn interest, then I am making money from having an account with the bank. Your argument might be that the bank is making money off of mine, and they're keeping most of it and giving me money in return (so we're assuming the money the bank made is actually mine), but that would work no matter in the investment vehicle, unless you're dealing with the primary goods. I could say I made money off of Apple stock, but you would say Apple made money off mine and only gave me some in return. The transaction data that they would sell to businesses is worth exponentially more than what they're selling directly to consumers. They probably only get a piece of what they're selling to customers right now. If Mint or a similar website tracked every Netflix fee you paid and bundled it anonymously with other users' transactions, then sold it, would you feel it violated your privacy? </i></p><p>The data's already out there: Netflix has it.</p><p>Mint doesn't have any data from me that's not in other places anyway.  My bank has the data, the businesses I swipe my card at have the data... Mint just aggregates it for me.  And I've been getting \"Special Offer!!!!oneone!11!!!\" all day in the mail since I was 16 anyway, so it's not like that's going to change.  (Although the recent meltdown did decrease my volume of junk mail to about 25% of its former tree-killing glory.)</p><p>So, I dunno. The only chink in this armor of anonymity comes in when sample sizes are ridiculously small, like in a city with only 8 people you might be able to extract some personally identifiable patterns with a reasonable level of confidence.</p><p>Individual records with the name removed are where the privacy threat comes in - if Mint sold one month of an individual's transactions, simply removing their name, that would be scary. A company like Target might be able to de-anonymize that data if you shopped at multiple target stores in that time period. It doesn’t give you any ironclad privacy guarantee. As long as the company follows the notification rules set by law they can change the terms in any way at any time. </p><p>This is why statements like, “We will never share your personal information with a third party.” are somewhat meaningless. If a company says such a thing it has to be a true statement <b>today</b>, but nothing prevents them from changing the policy in the future. I signed up and resolved to never go back all within 15 seconds. But the same thing could happen at any bank with any web interface. Looking deeper into it, you can't REALLY trust a brick and mortar bank either as someone there has access to your address and phone number! Or any online retailer for that matter!</p><p>Come to think of it... I can't trust my employer either! THEY HAVE MY INFO TOO! Perhaps your banks are different , but when I log into Chase/AMEX/BoA/etc., there is always a section which has my name and a place for me to verify/update my current mailing address and phone number.</p><p>It would be trivial for Mint to update the algorithms that log into your account to pull transaction data to also pull your current name/address/phone #.
