You don't have to order the McDouble. You can order the regular cheeseburger with only one burger patty. That would cut the calories significantly.
My problem would be the pickles and the ketchup they usually put on the burger. I don't like ketchup on eggs.

How is that a secret menu item? It's two regular menu items thrown together. By the customer, no less.
It's technically a secret menu item because people know it's called a Mc10:35 now, so they'll roll up to the window to ask for it. And it's only offered during the breakfast/lunch transition. Before, they just ordered the two and put them together. I figure by now, the McDonalds workers probably put it together for you, and you can tell them you want a Mc10:35 without getting puzzled looks in return.

What don't you get about this? It's not a secret menu item if you have to buy two items and then combine them yourself. It's like ordering a cheese burger and putting your fries on top. Just because you're combining it doesn't make it a secret menu item.

Dude, check your attitude at the door. My logic was that if it becomes more widely known among people in the SF area, and the McDonalds workers know about this as well, more people will begin to order it by name and the McDonalds workers might even start custom-making it to be this way so they aren't wasting an extra set of burger buns. If the McDonalds workers start putting this item together themselves, instead of giving both items separately to the person ordering it, it could be a secret menu item becuase it's an inventive combination that a customer made up that is not offered on the menu.
I suspect the basis of most secret menu items is that people came up with the combination, kept asking for the items separately, put the two together and eventually the workers caught onto its popularity and started to combine the items for the customer. After all, if you order the nachos (a secret menu item) at Chipotle, they don't hand you a bag of chips with a cup of salsa, a cup of cheese, and a bowl of meat. They put it all together for you.

Ok, some points that have been missed:
1. Menu items at a chain like McD's (especially) are decided by the corporate headquarters. The local restaurant can not simply make up menu items as they see fit, no matter how many people waltz in and ask for made up things.
2. \"Changeover\" is a very busy time, trying to unload the breakfast items while preparing for lunch. Additionally, this is not a set period- at 10:30, breakfast is over, and if it's been a slow day, whatever remains from breakfast might simply be dumped. You might be lucky to catch some remains of something. It's pretty much guaranteed that they will not make you an egg anything after 10:30.
3. McDonalds do NOT have \"chefs\". They are minimum wage monkeys who know how to follow the directions of putting item A onto item B, putting it in microwave, wrapping it up, then sending it out. That's it.

In Japan, this is actually on the breakfast menu.
Maybe a little different...but there is definitely a sandwich at breakfast with hamburger and egg.
If you want a burger and egg sandwich, go to Steak n Shake. Although they don't show it on the drive-thru menu anymore, you can order a Steakburger, egg and cheese bagel sandwich. (Not sure if it still appears on the dine-in menu or not.) I get one of these every couple of weeks. It's great!

Red Robin also offers a burger with egg and bacon. It's not really a unique item. I guess the draw is that it's something you can get (or make yourself) at McDonald's if you go at the right time.

Wanna try something really fun? Go to waffle house, order a waffle, 2 eggs over easy & bacon. Put the eggs on the waffle and break up the bacon. Surprisingly yummy. And probably about a day's worth of calories
So....its a double-sausage mcmuffin with egg.
Sausage isn't the same as hamburger though. The flavor and texture are entirely different. Sausage is spicier, sweeter, and has a slightly chewier texture.
There's more of a difference than just flavor/spice and texture. You're also missing the fact that one comes from a pig and the other comes from a cow.

And you're not taking the hamburger patties and putting them on the egg mcmuffin, you're taking the egg and ham and putting it on a burger. So you have a burger bun instead of an English Muffin, you have ketchup and onions and pickles... it's going to taste completely different than a sausage mcmuffin.

Alas, they are elusive. They're technically also blue potatoes...when you cook them, they turn more of a bluish color. They're expensive, too. I know Dean and Deluca has them once in a while for an outrageous price. I think I may have seen them at Balducci's too.

This is kind of what I do at Wendy's, but I can do it all the time. I get their Jr. Bacon Cheese burger from their dollar menu as well as the chicken sandwich from the dollar menu and combine them for a Bacon, Chicken, Cheese Burger. For $2 it is filling, tastes great, and I get the three animals I like to eat most.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, their new Bacon and Blue burger is quite the ripoff at $4.25. Considering you could get two of your unholy bacon/chicken/burgers for the same price as a bacon and blue. Hrm... now I kinda want to try your chicken/burger amalgam.

They actually have this item as a menu item in Japan. There are usually variants on it, because they change the menu all the time.

Right now there's a promotion called \"Big America\" (referring to the _country_, not the people), with different burgers for different states. This item is part of that promotion, but they've had similar things for the last 10 years.
There appear to be 4 state burgers: Hawaii (the one with egg), California, Texas, and New York. I can't tell you what's in them, aside from what is obvious in the pictures. They do all seem to involve bacon, though. Mmm, cured pork... the true essence of America.

This is why I go to Jack in the Box. They serve breakfast all day. I loves me some breakfast jacks at 1:00 in the afternoon.
Although I almost never play the lottery, I have always said that if I were to win a huge-ass jackpot, I'd open my own McDonald's franchise that served breakfast 24/7. Even if it takes a second grill and extra staff.
The problem with serving breakfast 24/7 is that they use the same grills to cook the eggs and the burgers, just set at different temperatures. McD's would have to install another set of grills to pull this off and I am pretty sure that the cost wouldn't replace the earnings.

Because Jack In The Box food tastes terrible. I'm not saying McDonald's is gourmet or anything, but it tastes better than Jack In The Box. One thing that drives me crazy about Jack In The Box is how their fries taste like their chicken tenders/patties.
I will grant Jack In The Box one thing however: their tacos are awesome and supremely bad for you too.
Because Jack-in-the-Box is not McDonald's and therefore they have different grill procedures/grill set ups?
When McDonald's says that they can't serve breakfast anymore because they are changing the grill over, they are literally changing the grill: cleaning it, resetting the temperature, turning the top half of the clamshell grill on.
It is a safety hazard to be cooking things on a clamshell grill when the top is on if you are not closing the grill down on top of the food.
Ehh...Jack in the Box was nearly entirely shut down nearly two decades ago due to food poisoning deaths, so probably not the best example for a reform of the breakfast menu and grill cleanliness.

Yes Yes Yes. Unfortunately, I don't have Jack In The Box where I live, but the first fast food place that serves breakfast all day (I'm looking at YOU, Burger King) in my region gets a four fold increase in my business.
Went to McDs, picked up the materials, and am eating the muffin know. Will assemble and consume shortly. Reports will be delivered.
Assembled, consumed. Photos, I regret to say, will be unavailable (I'd be joining the ranks of the unemployed if I actually hooked my phone up to the network and I didn't think that I could have emailed them to myself until just now).
Anyway, the sandwich was unremarkable. The muffin leftovers were heavily permeated with the flavor of egg or bacon (depending on what was touching it). The egg side wasn't bad, but the bacon side was nearly inedible. The taste was one of chemical preservative or other grossness. I certainly cannot blame the taste on freshness, as the sandwich was made to order. Surprisingly enough, the folks at McDs were willing to make me breakfast even though lunch had officially started. I did feel some shame though, as eavesdroppers cascaded my request and multiple McMuffin orders were placed.
After combining the contents of the McMuffin with the McDouble, I began work on the heart of the matter. The first several bites, from the \"crust\" of the sandwich were extra bland. Somehow the egg/bacon actually canceled out the taste of the McDouble. Once I began to approach the \"mantle\" of the sandwich, the taste returned. This was unfortunate, as it seemed that I was doomed to slog through a unquestionably gross meal for Consumerist purposes. I could taste the individual elements, but they did not combine to form a whole. Rather than forming Voltron, I had five lions stuck together with duct tape.
Then, I hit the \"core.\" Angels sang, a fanfare of trumpets blared, peace spread across the face of the land - I could even hear the shrieks of Nancy Pelosi being exposed to sunlight just a few blocks away. Everything had combined to form a delicious flavor. Sweet and salty, light and right, crisp and soggy - everything had found its place. At this point, my bites became smaller, for I know what I was facing.
And it came to pass. Just as a crescendo built as I began the sandwich, the fall was a mirror image. Taste went from heaven to hell to nothing.
Verdict: try it once for the novelty, if you really want to
NB: some alterations were made to the standard offering - there was no cheese on either sandwich, as I think plastic is not made for human consumption; \"hot\" mustard was added to the egg/bun border. At $3.49+tax, the sandwich is well overriced compared to local competitors (including Potbelly's, which is a couple blocks away).

Actually this isn't a new 'idea' just a new idea for McDonalds. I have been to numerous food establishments where getting a burger with a fried egg is nothing new. In fact this was a staple at one of my old hometown bars in Erie, PA. Fried egg on a burger? yes please. with a side of malt vinegar for dipping sauce. Heavenly.

I have seen egg on burgers in other countries like Australia and New Zealand so it's not a new concept (some even contain a slice of beet root too). But a mcdouble is too much burger. What about subtracting one beef patty and replacing it wit a sausage patty. So you would have cheese, egg, beef and sausage.

When I was in Japan in late 2007/early 2008, they had a MEGA TAMAGO BURGER, which was three Big Mac patties and the egg patty. The combo came with fries AND a six-count chicken Mcnuggets. It was insane.

I've always wished that McD's would offer at least some lunch menu items in the morning. I once was told by a store owner that it's not easy because the kitchen has to do some amazing contortions similar to those in the 2 transformers movies to start serving the different items...
It's mainly to do with the different temperatures required to cook the sausage patties and the normal burgers and the fact that they use the same grills to do them. At about 10am (or earlier), they transfer a lot of the sausage and bacon to their water cooled hot plate container thing, and then clean and fire up the grills to the right temperatures.
