I was eating in a chain restaurant when the manager came up to our table and said: \"I understand you found an insect in your salad.\" We really appreciated the high level of \"taking it seriously\", but we hadn't, in fact, found any foreign matter in our food. Slow thinking as I am, I realized later we should have made a fuss and gotten our meal comped or at least a free fruity drink.
Maybe your slowness will help keep you honest...

I thought about that, and I figured that someone, somewhere, thought that was a good enough idea to market it. Most of these are accidental things that everyone finds gross regardless of culture.

The only thing grossing me out about the bacon is the fact that it's from Smithfield. I got some extremely fatty stuff from Niman Ranch recently, celebrated and rendered it down for making everything delicious.
but fat is cheap, and bacon is spendy. I'd be pissed if my bacon was all fat.
The mouse/toad in the diet pepsi story reminds me of something that happened at a local fast food restaurant I worked at:
I was cleaning out the ice dispenser in our soda machine because some cardboard drink containers had gotten jammed in there and pieces were coming out with the ice. Additionally a customer had complained about a cockroach in their drink. While cleaning the ice dispenser I kept pulling out pieces that looked like a mouse, but the manager didn't believe me. I convinced her after I eventually pulled out almost the entire body of the mouse.

I got a salad from Arby's and found a chunk of wood in it. Not a splinter; a piece about three inches long and and a half inch wide. It looked like a part of a fence post. Then, at Applebee's, my salmon had a wire from the wire brush used to clean the grill in it. I have to say that at both places the manager comped me and gave me coupons.

My friends and I still call Chevy's \"Bandaids\" after one of us found a bloody used one in a burger about 7 years ago. I haven't eaten there since.

I work in the restaurant business, and have so for more than 25 years. With most food prepackaged off site you see allot of \"foreign object contamination\". I have seen frogs, ladybugs and preying mantises in bags of lettuce, signs that there was irrigation (frogs live in water) and natural pest control (both of those animals control insect pests). When we encounter that, and anyone who buys preprocessed food will, we throw it out, notify our supplier and move on. Because we have a system in place to insure the food is inspected before being utilized in food prep, I have never once had an issue where an object appeared in customer food.
Pests have been around for millenia, and they will continue to be so. That is why we wash all of our food before using it, as you should too. Even stuff you get from the local organic farm should be washed, even more so since they use excrement as a fertilizer.
Plainly put, our food supply chain will never be perfect.
There's a big difference between \"Perfect\" and MickeyLoaf Bread. What you're talking about is pest contamination in fresh produce. Duh, food grows outside. However, once the flour has been ground, and the spices brought inside... Mice should not be anywhere near my food. Period.

I know the bacon looks \"disgusting\", but I'd have used it to render fat in a pan for cooking other things. It really isn't that bad.

Just last week a friend gave me grief for eating back bacon instead of \"regular\" bacon. Now I've got something to return the favor and return the laughing.
