That's not nearly as gross as the mouse in the pepsi can, so hurray for Weight Watchers for including whole frogs?

It's refreshing that Noreen has such a good attitude about it. I think it's probably because she didn't actually eat it and make the discovery mid-bite. People get all huffy and whiny about these things, but if it's not horrifying, have a good chuckle.

Aren't these things cooked, then flash frozen as to prevent overcooking? Then they go into sealing? Or do they get sealed and then frozen?

Actually, it's hard to say for sure because the frog has been frozen and cooked. The skin is funky and has changed coloration, I'd guess it is a young Lithobates of some kind, but even that could be wrong. If only the OP had taken photos of her terrifying lunch with the thought of someone trying to identify said frog to species...heheh.

There are a couple of species who can survive freezing temperatures, correct. They do it through using a special type of \"antifreeze\" in their cells to prevent ice crystals from forming and damaging them. But there are only a couple of species that can do it, and they can't just be dropped into a freezer - the physiological changes that allow them to overwinter like this don't turn on quite like that. So in short yes, some do, but Fred the Froggy was most likely a goner.

Being in manufacturing since '86, and seeing literally hundreds of different manufacturing applications on the production floor, IMO the only way this happened is stone, cold, sabotage. Someone tossed this frog into the box just before it was sealed. Now the question is what type of frog is it? If it is local to the manufacturing plant, which it probably is, that would lead to the idea that it was tossed in at the last minute. If not, I wouldn't have a clue. This seems to be going on more frequently and it's all funny until someone gets sick or worse.

But things like the inspections of the peanut plants involved in the peanut butter salmonella say otherwise. They found rodent evidence in the plant and IIRC the big problem was birds inside said plant. The critter infiltrations had made the place filthy inside and was supposedly part of the outbreak problem.

Frogs don't tend to do well in places like factories, though. They dry out, and if the place has any sort of disinfection policy going on, it goes right through their skin and kill them. Frogs, in general, don't do very well inside. There are very strict husbandry requirements, in fact.

Find out where the manufacturing plant is. If you narrow that down for me, I can narrow down whether this is a local frog, though as I told Kimaroo - my guess is that it is a Lithobates of some sort. These are broadly distributed across the country (they include things like green frogs and bull frogs).

It also has a very convenient explanation of the packaging of what looks to be this exact meal. Looks like the frog got in after the sauce, but right before the heat-sealing. And it didn't weigh enough to set off the \"checkweigher\" (unless it's only set off by underweight meals.)

Randomly, I grew up about 45 minutes from Massillon, Ohio.

This doesn't look much like any adult frogs from that area - BUT it is possible that they have multiple processing plants. In addition, I've never eaten one of these meals, but I'm guessing the bowls they come in aren't that big, so the scale is telling me that Fred the frog isn't that big. This means that the frog is a juvenile - the only frogs we have that region that are that small look NOTHING like this (as adults or as younguns).

Juveniles tend to have slightly different colorations than adults,so it's hard to be 100% certain from these photos. it could still be a young Lithobates, maybe a baby green or bull frog.

Or, it could be from a different region, from a totally different taxonomic family, I'm thinking treefrog group. The shape of the nose should give some clues, but it's hard to say from these photos. I'm more of a tropical frog specialist.

It is not crappy quality control. Fresh produce has stuff in it. Your lettuce could have had worms on it. Your apples might have bugs inside. You could not afford food that has been individually inspected. The expectation in food safety is what are your protocols and procedures,NOT to look at each item. The option of course is to make and grow your own. Of course, that won;t stop a frog from possibly being in your broccoli

It's probably a good thing the OP stops eating them. Those things are god-awful and packed with sodium. She's better off making a lunch at home rather than risking hypertension later. I realize that not everyone has this option (time, etc.) but it can be done. I make meals ahead of time at home, freeze them, then bring them in. I've probably saved more in money doing it this way, as well as being able to control sodium content and other things.

As for the frog..ew..

Weight Watchers, Healthy Choice, or just any frozen dinner has an insane amount of sodium in them. Just look at the info next time you go grocery shopping. See if you can find one that has less than 20% sodium in it.

And you won't find any frozen animals in them if you make them yourself.

I guess you're free to react how you see fit - but I would have grabbed those coupons (can I have a few more for my emotional hardship??) and gone to town. Of course, it's unacceptable that they didn't refund you the instant you asked. If you consider the fact that people have filed lawsuits over this stuff and have won, then they really should have offered you anything you want within reason.

I have to give WW low marks for declining to refund the OP the purchase price of the remaining product unless she discloses the UP Codes and the receipts. If the OP is anything like me, the receipt stayed in the bag and the bag is now filled with doggy poo and deep-sixed in a trash can at the playground. WW believes that she is trying to scam WW and they want to confirm the actual purchase. That's superficially reasonable but sort of dumb. Unless she told WW that she has hundreds of these products in her freezer, WW would have been smarter to write her a check for $30 or whatever it is just to keep the matter shtumm. WW has saved itself the money but now everyone who reads The Consumerist knows about the frog surprise bonus.

UPC code wouldn't show where they were produced - all UPC codes for a given product are the same. UPC stands for Universal product code. If they wanted production info, there is usually a lot number stamped somewhere on there.

I assumed when the OP said UPC CODES (plural) I am sure they were talking about the UPC and the lot numbers. They want proof she bought it, and the ability to track it. This is not unreasonable in any way. If she said, I have everything except the receipt because I bought this three weeks ago, then I am sure they would give her money back. I find it it ironic in this forum that people hold companies to letter of the law, but when a consumer is not willing to do something very reasonable to help their own cause it is the fault of the company. Mistakes happen. She was offered a great deal with coupons, bt rejected it. Now she might get her $2 back IF she will do what they ask. If she were a good consumer and cared she would want to get to the bottom of this. Was this a failure in QC, or was this tampering? I think she has a MORAL duty to help in the matter. If it were a case of illegal tampering it would be selfish on her part not to comply. It also seems fishy that she thinks that is too much of a bother to do.

I think the Wendy's lady wanted to recover a lot more than the purchase price. I think she was talking about getting big money. If the OP is on the level about not wanting to eat this stuff ever again, I can see why she doesn't want to pay for it. Maybe if WW gets the UPC's they can figure out which store they shipped them to and they'll communicate that to the store where she bought it and tell them to give her money back when she comes in with the goods. Or maybe they're just chumping her off. It's tough to call.

I see your point about wanting the UPC's to check their own production records, but at the same time WW is claiming with some certainty that the frog was a one-shot affair.

The moral of the story: You can never really tell with frogs.

Wondering why supplying the UPC codes is an issue. (reciepts, ok, those could have been tossed, but the time between opening the box and peeling back the plastic was what, abot 4 minutes?)

But isn't it any consumer's best interest to supply the manufacturer with as much info as possible to track down where, when and how this happened?

I'm leaning to this frog got scooped up with the brocolli, but that leads to the next issue, that other meals using brocolli were contaminated with general frogginess that same day. Yeah, I know, it's not an issue if you don't know about it- until the next outbreak of mad frog disease. Only partly joking. People who grow their own veggies are used to the occaisional slug in the lettuce, but it's different when it's *your* slug.

Yes they are, just ask Bear Grylls (Man vs. Wild). They're also high in protein and low in fat, so they should be very low in WW points.

I prefer to grill mine, however, than microwave it. Much better flavor.

Do amphibians fall under \"meat\" or \"veggies\". To be honest, I've never asked nor have I ever heard anyone talk about it. I suppose it is meat but to me, I will never eat anything that has been around for a million years. Oh well, I can see this happening on occasion. Back in the day, I used to work at a grocery store and we'd get tarantulas in bananas. I've seen snakes in the garden area at Home Depot stores. Newsflash: Veggies are grown outside, lots of leaves and moist conditions - frogs like those spots. So one or two are bound to get scooped up with a bunch of veggies and make it into the assembly line on occasion.

Yeah, they do check for these things, but the frog is green vis a vis the broccoli, so I can see it getting missed even by the best of computerized or human eyes.

Or yep, someone could have tossed it in there. But what WW did was wrong - they should have said \"hey, we'll refund that and all the other ones in your freezer (esp if it was something reasonable like 20 boxes). If we send you a box, would you be so kind as to return it to us so we can analyze it and prevent this from happening again?\"

That'd be it... but the fools over there didn't, so now what's probably a one-off oops, turns into a \"thing\" that the world knows about. What's THAT cost the brand?

As an aside, I've got frogs in my backyard pond... not sure where they came from, they just sorta showed up one day and have been there off and on for several years. Kinda nice actually - they don't bug me, but they do eat the bugs!

I'm really wondering about this one. Whether it was flash frozen or not, if you put a frog in the microwave, the brain cavity expands and the skin crackles and snaps. When the meal is put into the tray, it's already heated and cooked, so the frog would have been dead, as well as you would probably see some skin damage, just like when you cook chicken.
I've cooked frogs many times, (yes, some people eat weird things) and this doesn't quite seem like there is all the info here.

Forgive my knowledge of TV dinners here,but in the top left picture, see how the sauce is all on one side? the instructions will tell you to open it a bit (or maybe she thought the saw something funny and was pulling it back to check), microwave, open it the rest of the way, stir the sides together, and microwave again.

So my guess is this is frozen (thawed from sitting while she found a camera, but overall uncooked) OR only microwaved for the minute or so it takes to break the sauce apart to be stir-able.

Here's a thought. Beneath the cardboard, plastic, and preservatives lies a plant that once grew in soil from a seed. It is sad that food has become so altered that we are astonished to see something like this. To everyone that this little frog offended, try cooking real food for a change. Your wasteful eating is shameful.

When I cook real food, including the food that I grow myself, I make sure to remove any and all living creatures on or around it that I don't plan on eating before cooking. Your mileage may vary.

My partner is Thai.. Staying at her village last year, mum-in-law barbecued baby frogs with basil and some spices wrapped in banana leaves. Delicious. Didn't get ill, didn't die, and it wasn't the weirdest thing I have eaten there.

what a cute little frog.

to think that this poor tiny frog was eating her veggies (broccoli) when all of a sudden she's picked up with some machinery, taken for a wild ride to some factory, thrown alive in bowling water and then frozen to maybe 10 below zero..... i think the frog got it worse :(

It looks like a plain old American Tree Frog to me. At least you know the veggies are fresh! Poor guy, looks like he was trying to get out.
