I wish att would upgrade the speed in my neighborhood. Unless they are lieing(sp?) and I can get faster than the DSL Ultra package that I have had for the last 5 years. I live in a populated area and SE Fl too.

According to Time Warner, I should be getting 6Mbps, yet Speedtest.net seems to consistently return about 15Mbps.
And for actually downloading stuff, I usually hover around 800Kbps.
The farther you are away from the station, the slower your service is on dsl. I'm not sure FIOS is the same but when I had DSL I was told my actual speed would depend on my distance, which turned out to be close so I didn't lose much.

I've got ATT DSL and it's the 6mbs service. Speedtest will usually peg it at 5+mbs so allowing for network overhead/distance to the box that's good. It's as fast/faster than Comcast ever was in my area.
The protocols used in your Internet service add an overhead. So even if your equipment is training at 7 megabits and your ISP can deliver all of it to you, the overhead will bring your speed down a bit. 6 is not bad... I would expect you could get up to around 6.3 if everything was working perfectly.
They advertise UP TO, not \"you will get\". It is like when any place advertises shirts as low as $5. It does not mean any shirt will be that price. There are way too many variables to ask for an exact number, and if you wanted it, you couldn't afford it.

Under normal conditions you don't actually achieve the stated pipe speed. I'm supposed to have 5 Mb, and usually can get 4.7 - 4.8 Mb download speed. Sometimes a little more even than that. But an even 5 Mb? No.
I'm averaging 6.2mb/s right now, which I'm okay with. With my older 3mb, I averaged 2.8. I'm more than double my former speed so for now it works for me. Line distance will affect my speed, which I understand.
Yea I know, the *actual* speed is never what they advertise but it's still irritating just like the bad ole days of companies bs'ing about the size of a monitor by rounding up. With even numbers.

That is something the TV manufactures caught on to as well. TVs are now advertised as being a size class (i.e. 37\" Class could be 36.1\").
I remember with CRTs, it was measured to the outside of the case, rather than just the viewable area itself.

Had this same issue at my old house, neighbor at the house directly on the side of me could get DSL, but my house, which is actually CLOSER(albeit by maybe 1 foot) to the CO was 'too far from the CO' *rolls eyes*
That's pretty normal in many older places due to homes not all being built at the same time. Bell didn't run lines to empty lots, and COs would fill up before those lots got built on. That means some houses are on one CO, and others are on another, because their lines run different ways.

We have internet through a local cable company who is supplied internet by another company called Cablelynx. We are supposed to get \"up to 10 mbps\" but we get consistently download speeds of about 0.5 mbps, 1/20th of what we should be getting. We contacted technical support numerous times and they are baffled. They say they aim for about 70% of the maximum amount during peak hours, which would be about 7 mpbs.
They even sent a technical person to our apartment, but all the guy could tell us when he got here was that it was a \"bandwidth issue\" and that it's been going on for a long time. We just signed up for this internet when we moved here at the beginning of September. So, we're kind of peeved that they've known they have been providing nothing close to what they say you are paying for, yet they still are advertising it and signing up new customers for their 10 mbps service.
We don't know if the problem is with our local company or with Cablelynx. Nobody will provide us any answers. The technical support guy that came to our house just kept referring every question to a certain man at our local company. When we called our local company they told us they were trying to get in touch with him too.
We can't stream Netflix movies through the X-box or watch TV shows online, things we really enjoyed doing previously. I wonder how common our problem is.
We've learned the hard way that just because Verizon says they can deliver a certain DSL speed means nothing. One of our customers wanted to switch from Covad to Verizon because VZ said they could provide 7MBPS service with no trouble. Actual speeds have been on the order of 2 to 3MBPS. Verizon originally said it was something on our customer's network so they wanted everything disconnected so they could run some sort of isolated test. We sent someone out, disconnected the customer's equipment and contacted Verizon. Their response: \"You're right. We can't deliver 7MBPS. Sorry.\" Now I need to call and get the service downgraded so at least the customer is paying a rate appropriate for the slower speed. The entire experience was typical Verizon.
It's sad that the problem you were having is precisely the problem I had with Verizon when DSL first came to my neighborhood, and that has to be 10 years or more. You'd think they'd have fixed it by now. Sigh.
Nice to see his house didnt \"burn down\" with only 7mbps, I have 20mbps standard at my house (not DSL), and my house sometimes smokes and I hear the wood crackle... Its quite nice around Christmas when my friends ask, \"Oh, do you have a fireplace?\"... \"Nope, thats just my house burning down internet speed I get from Comcast! Its Comcastic!\" HAHA
what ... he pays for 7mb and expects (and should get) 7mb ... why can't it be the same over here, or i should call videotron and annoy them enough until they really boost me to what i'm paying for

Well no wonder it isn't burning down; his service is only running at 6 mbps. That'll just help him save on heating bills. If he gets to 7 mbps, that's when all hell breaks loose.

Verizon doesn't like to honor their own website ads. They will offer deals that you can only access the website ad when you are not logged in to you Verizon account if you are an existing customer. Also, CSR's can't see the ads either when you are trying to get the deal. I've found the only way around this is to ask to speak to the retention dept. and they will only let you do this when your account or current contract is expiring imminently.
In general I plan on 4-6 hours of total time on the phone and/or in webchat with CSR's anytime I need to deal with Verizon, then I don't get frustrated when it has already taken 3 hours and I haven't gotten the issue addressed yet. And if it only takes 2 hours, I can be down-right happy!
I do feel that one of these sessions will be in my future soon though, as their bills are again including the statement \"DO NOT PAY THIS BILL YOU ARE ON AN AUTOMATIC BILLPAY PLAN\" (or something to that effect) even though it's clear that their billpay system has broken down again since they didn't collect last month's payment. This happened three times when I still had Verizon home phone service and is the reason I ultimately cancelled my phone service with them.
Back when I worked for a company that installed local area networks, DSL was just becoming available in the local area, and we basically handled the install and configuration with the LAN. It was universally recognized internally to the company that \"DSL\" stood for Doesn't Seem Likely.
wow,..amazing. Verizon doing their job? Unforunately, I was at the other end of the rope with my situation. I apparently qualified for their fastest DSL service but found it weird that every friday to monday morning my internet wouldnt work whatsoever. Problem always resolved itself around noon time.
long story short. I never qualified for that plan. My modem was straining itself and i discontinued their service. My next only choice. Time WarnerCable . Great....
My mother has had Verizon DSL since before it was Verizon (Bell something or other?) and we've ALWAYS had problems with their customer service.
Last year, however, she was able to figure out the secret Verizon formula to not only get directed to \"Executive\" customer service, but to get one of those execs to give her his personal number if anything else popped up in the future.
Needless to say, the problems were solved, but the connection still sucks. Sometimes it wont work for an entire month, and getting them to reimburse that months payment is a chore, even with the exec service.
Here's the real problem: Why is there a 2nd tier of customer service at all? Why can't all CSR's be empowered with the same authority that these higher level CSR's seemingly have? In my mind, it is purely to obfuscate and confuse current customers, while drawing in new customers with low prices alone. Terrible terrible business.
Good for you man and I know the frustration as I am going through something similar right now.
