I work(ed) at a place where all we do is watch movies in the many combinations of audio and subtitle variants, and make sure that everything works.</p><p>That means a person is literally getting paid to watch a movie again and again, to make sure that the audio and subtitles work properly.  </p><p>Before you think of this as your dream job, imagine a movie that you absolutely hate.  Now, you have to take it, and watch it again, and again, and again.  In a language you don't understand.  Oh, and you have to watch all the bonus content.  Again, and again, and again.</p><p>So by stripping out all of the menus, bonus features, and additional languages, the studios are saving a whole lot more money.</p><p>That is why it is cheaper to put out a bare bones disk, rather than a rental with the bonus content included.</p><p>And the inability to bypass all of those previews via top menu? We are retailers and not members of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), so we take no position on individual scenes or the overall artistic merits of a film. We are not in the content business. We are in the business of exceeding the expectations of our members and customers, and thus our goal is to offer the widest possible selection within our broad parameters of our \"no NC-17 or X\" standards.</p><p>BLOCKBUSTER® has always tried to provide our customers with a variety of choices while maintaining our family orientation. As you know, we will not carry \"X\" rated or \"NC-17\" rated films. However, there are unrated film titles we feel may contain content unsuitable for children, and we designate these titles with a \"YRV\" designation, for \"Youth Restricted Viewing\". Although not pornographic, only members older than 17 are allowed to select these films.</p></blockquote><p>So it says they rent <i>\"all movies for rent or sale exactly as we receive them from the studios\"</i>.  But it doesn't say that they don't ask for or receive their own \"Blockbuster edition\" versions from the studios.  </p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20049199, 'Wireless Joe')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->							<div class=\"num-replies\">1 replies</div>	    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->     <!-- Loop through the reply comments -->        <div class=\"reply-container\" >            <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-20049865\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=1192018\"><img        src=\"/css/images/default.gif\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=1192018\">Bunnyhat</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2010/01/is-blockbuster-sending-out-gimped-versions-of-some-blu-rays.html#comment-20049865\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2010-01-11T13:22:16-05:00\">January 11, 2010  1:22 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20049865);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20049865');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>I work at a small chain of video rental companies.</p><p>We don't 'ask' for our own version of a movie. You can usually tell because they're bare bones and the disc is usually grey or silver. I don't have any problem with this, since it is probably cheaper for Redbox, Netflix, and Blockbuster to get rental versions of movies in higher demand. Also, I suspect it tempers the temptation to steal the disc. If it's a disc that is the same one sold in stores, I think people would be more tempted to steal it. If it's just a barebones disc, it's not as worthwhile.</p><p>I think the problem is that Blockbuster advertised an un-rated version (which isn't anything special, btw) and didn't offer it. Netflix doesn't hide it at all - when you reserve the movie on the Netflix site, it tells you what special features, if any, are on the disc. </p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20049213, 'pecan 3.14159265')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-20049215\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=306734\"><img        src=\"/css/images/default.gif\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=306734\">sirwired</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2010/01/is-blockbuster-sending-out-gimped-versions-of-some-blu-rays.html#comment-20049215\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2010-01-11T09:02:07-05:00\">January 11, 2010  9:02 AM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20049215);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20049215');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>I recently rented \"Up\" from Redbox at my parent's house. I got The Hangover for Christmas, and it's the same way- A LOT of trailers and ads that can only be skipped with the \"next\" button.  You can't get to the top menu until they're done, which is very, very annoying.  I suspect that the OP would have found the unrated version on the menu once they finally got there. </p><p>I love the picture quality of Blu-Ray, but I find the overall experience frustrating.  I prefer discs to go to a menu to start, not starting with a bunch of ads and not jumping right to the feature.  This is especially annoying with TV show sets- I want my episode selection right off the bat, not from a pop up menu once the first episode on the disc is already playing.  That's the biggest reason I bought season 2 of Chuck on standard DVD rather than blu-ray.  </p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20049345, 'HootieMac')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->							<div class=\"num-replies\">1 replies</div>	    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->     <!-- Loop through the reply comments -->        <div class=\"reply-container\" >            <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-20049423\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=537475\"><img        src=\"/mt-static/support/assets_c/userpics/userpic-537475-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=537475\">pecan 3.14159265</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2010/01/is-blockbuster-sending-out-gimped-versions-of-some-blu-rays.html#comment-20049423\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2010-01-11T10:36:51-05:00\">January 11, 2010 10:36 AM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20049423);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20049423');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>Btw, some people are having trouble with their copy of the season two of Chuck because Warner Bros. had to order a second printing last minute, and some of the shipped DVDs didn't include the 3D glasses and 3D episode. </p><p>If yours doesn't have either, you can contact Warner Bros. and it'll replace your set. They are not at fault. Warner and Fox have begun \"rental exclusive\" programs in a short-sighted means of trying to boost sales. We've tried to begin listing what discs have rental versions on AVS, but it is sporadic, sometimes by location: <a href=\"http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1207471\" rel=\"nofollow\">http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1207471</a></p><p>It seems the distributors may or may not get a rental copy, and it seems the stores have little say as to what comes in. I can say that I've rented the Hangover, The Final Destination, The Wrestler, and more. This has been going on for some time.</p><p>Not only does it suck for the consumer, but those of us who review Blu-rays are getting shafted as well if a review copy (such as what happened with the new Harry Potter) is not sent by the studio. When all we have access to is a gimped, featureless disc, it becomes harder to be informative. </p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20049378, 'Gamereviewgod')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->							<div class=\"num-replies\">1 replies</div>	    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->     <!-- Loop through the reply comments -->        <div class=\"reply-container\" >            <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-20050124\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=1524425\"><img        src=\"/css/images/default.gif\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=1524425\">phonebem</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2010/01/is-blockbuster-sending-out-gimped-versions-of-some-blu-rays.html#comment-20050124\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2010-01-11T15:11:03-05:00\">January 11, 2010  3:11 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20050124);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20050124');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>Nice talk about cutting-off your nose to spite your face; sending gimpy, stripped-down versions of disks to the people who will rate the content of the disk and possibly provide free advertising... According to the Netflix site, the rating for the version I currently have out is \"UR\" for unrated.  Even the sleeve states that its Unrated. When I popped it in, all I got was a menu asking me if I wanted Widescreen or Full-Screen.  No big deal, I thought, they must not have both theatrical and Unrated version on the same disc.  Wrong.  What I ended up with was the same movie that I saw in the theaters 3 times. The library world almost got caught up in it because the studios seem to think libraries are a secondary rental market (they're not - they're archival \"tools\").  Only by the intervention of a major library DVD vendor did the studios back off.  But it didn't save the likes of the rentals outfits like Blockbuster/NetFlix/RedBox.  They are still subject to the whims of the studios.  But if you find a Mom & Pop shop to rent from, there's a possibility they might have gotten some of their copies from a smaller vendor closer to the retail market, therefore saving themselves from having to buy the stripped version.  </p><p>The studios want you to purchase your own copy so they strip out the extra features.  That way you'll buy it for yourself so you can see all the good stuff.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20075714, 'carlogesualdo')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>");
