With clever investments, I was earning a higher return than the penalty that was assessed and came out ahead (yes, even calculating the income tax assessed on the interest payments). You're welcome.</p><p>I yearn for the day when EVERYONE is forced to actually put pen to paper and send quarterly tax payments to the government rather then having it automatically withheld from their paycheck. So I normally need to pay an estimated tax but I didn’t this year because, 1) My wife went back to school and lost an income, 2) My pay was dropped by nearly half in April.  I figured due to these two big changes it was difficult to estimate my income for the year and may not even owe money.  Should I make some payment to avoid interest?  Is there a way to calculate what would be owed?  Any ideas?  Or help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!
