Remember the majority of McDonalds are independently owned. I use Panera for the free wi-fi frequently and they actually have a timer at some of them during their lunch time. It has automatically logged me off when I go over the time alotted. When I worked at McDonalds, the only rules for hanging out there for a while were you were not to disturb the other patrons, and you had to buy something atleast once an hour, be it a dollar fry or a soda. At least the McDonalds employees are getting paid while they're being bathed in the smell of hot fats. </p><p>Not to mention that some of the McDonalds around here are beacons for rowdy teens just out of school and looking to cause some mayhem. What is it about D.C. school kids that just infuriates metro riders? Oh yeah. Hooliganism. The one time I went to the McDonalds in Dupont, I was treated to a racist diatribe by a black homeless man.</p><p>As I was sitting down to eat the hamburger I had ordered, in walked this homeless black man who began accosting me for money and the food I was eating. (Being a college student I don't have much of either). I mean, it's a fast food joint, nothing special, but I've sat down to eat in the dining room from time to time with friends' kids or when running 8 zillion errands and wanting to sit STILL for 20 minutes instead of eating in the car. If my internet was down, I wouldn't mind sitting there for a few hours if I needed to get work done. They nearly stir themselves into a riot. They push and shove, and they crowd the tops of escalators, and they generally cause a lot of trouble for riders because they clog platforms in large groups, they don't pay attention to who they're running into, and they get physical with each other. We've already had at least two kids hit by trains because of horseplay. If you are a salesman and you spend your entire day traveling from appointment to appointment, you need some place to kill time if one apointment finished early, or your next appointment is running late or canceled.  Most people will seek out a place that has a table and wifi so they can check E-mails and process orders.  A place with food and beverages is even better, so that leaves Starbucks and now McDonalds (and perhaps a few other chain eateries).  If I can be in a new area and know that SB and McD have WiFi, I will stop at the first one that I find. If I'm cruising on my motorcycle through Tremonton, Utah or Burns, Oregon it's nice to pull into a Micky D's and have free internet access.  I've done this a number of times in rural parts of the west, where they already have free internet access and the nearest Starbucks is 500 miles away. If you don't believe me get a map, center a compass on Salt Lake City, and draw a circle.  For instance, I doubt if there's a Starbucks between say, Salt Lake City and Cheyenne, WY.  But there's a McDonald's at nearly every exit on the interstate. Just me, my motorcycle and some camping gear.  Every now and then someone else wants to ride with me but I like riding longer distances than most people can put up with.  My longest day in the saddle ever was about 20 hours.  (Tremonton, UT to Seattle, WA)  There's fantastic scenery out in the Idaho badlands, and you can see more of it on two wheels than in a car sometimes.</p><p>But back on the subject, you're absolutely right.  That consistent sameness of American chains is their greatest strength.  Except for Cracker Barrel.  I'll never forgive them for their anti-gay policies of years ago so I'll never spend a dime there again. Where in the world would I sit with my laptop? Until very recently McDonalds was growing in huge numbers in same store sales, while Starbucks was in free fall. It means the possibility of something like 14000 free hotspots in the US. </p><p>I don't understand why wifi is always either ridiculously expensive or completely free. I would gladly pay .25 cents to a dollar for an hour or so for wifi but I'm only going to pay $7.00+ if I'm desperate. It's all about who you think your customers are.  Because free wi-fi is so plentiful I refuse to pay for it anymore.  And the companies that use advertising to pay for the link lose out with me as well, as Glimmerblock squashes all.  </p><p>That said, I'll always buy something at shops that offer free wi-fi if I'm using it.  I'd much rather pay indirectly, as long as I'm not abused in the process. It's much easier to find a mcDonalds than it is to find a starbucs.
