@h3llc4t, breaker of office dress codes: Depo-Provera was my worst nightmare. It was a great birth control because I was such a C U Next Tuesday that nobody wanted to touch me with a ten foot pole, not to mention that I ate like a pig and had developed acne.
@Burning pakalolo not even noticing the weather: I've heard that before from quite a few women. I consider myself lucky that I only get one day every 3 months where I'm kind of touchy and want to eat a lot of chocolate.
@Lez Lemon: 25 here and while my doctor has discussed it with me, she made it clear that she doesn't think it's a good choice just yet. Also, I have no idea who buys those. I have always been more than happy to have some on-hand so I knew where they came from and that they weren't expired.

@h3llc4t, breaker of office dress codes: Dude, get the mirena. Honestly. I never realised how miserable I was with the pill until I was off it and I swore never again would I deal with that. Mirena has been absolutely awesome. Between that and my crappy ovaries it'd be some miracle baby if it ever happened.
The first couple weeks with the IUD sucked, and insertion was pretty awful, but since then? oh heck yes.

My boyfriend and I have a Mirena (well, I have one - plus we've been together for 4 years so we're good) so we haven't worried for a while, but my friends... @squinko: Yeah, I've known about the Black Box warning thing since I started it. I get bone density checks twice a year and take supplements just in case, but we are in the process of exploring longer-term solutions. I'm not *quite* ready for a tubal yet, and the Mister is concerned about not knowing when an IUD or Norplant is no long effective, so the research continues. I can say that in the time I've taken it, Depo has been *awesome* for me. No mood swings, spotting, weight gain or drug interactions like I had with oral contraceptives.
And now Consumerists know way more about my uterus than they ever imagined they would.

@h3llc4t, breaker of office dress codes: also be careful with long term things - i had a friend whose norplant expired two years after her insurance ended and medicaid in her state doesn't cover the removal. she just got it taken out after saving the money up, it hasn't been active for over 5 years.

@h3llc4t, breaker of office dress codes: for ladies who are skeptical about IUD I would get Implanon. Last for 3 years and it is one of the most effective products on the market. It goes in your arm and your good. Checking it is as easy and feeling your arm. Its great!
@h3llc4t, breaker of office dress codes: If you're worried about an IUD, have it replaced around year four instead of year five. Speak with your GYN though if you're worried. I <3 mine.
Also, he should be the one getting the operation, not you. It's easier for men, less intrusive, costs less, less side effects, etc. I believe more insurances cover a vasectomy than a tubal anyway.
@squinko: Mine's pretty great, and I'm 100% on board with the IUD idea. I might just have to bring Kris in and have him talk to her, because it's his reluctance that's keeping me from it. Part of my issue is that I have dysmenorrhea, and hormonal BC has been helpful for me with those symptoms. Ligation sometimes makes the pain *worse*, and if he got a vasectomy I'd likely end up pursuing dysmenorrhea treatment anyway. A girlfriend of mine is going through a similar discussion with her husband, so we've been bouncing IUD info back and forth for the last two months or so.

@squinko: Agreed - it's less invasive, has fewer potential side-effects, and can be reversed later in life if you both choose to try for children. Unless there's something wrong with your innards, I would say make him do it. Insurance is also likely to cover it, as it's far cheaper than their coverage of contraceptive devices (or children).
@reuvenb: True, but that depends more on how much of the vas tubes were removed during the original vasectomy, and how much scar tissue formed - choosing a good doctor/surgeon to do the original vasectomy has an effect on the odds of reversal. You probably will find vasectomy reversals have a higher rate of success than reversal of the rather permanent tubal ligation, for instance.
Also note that you could still have sperm removed and implanted if the reversal didn't work, although there are percentages with procedures like that as well.
@h3llc4t, breaker of office dress codes: I liked Depo too. I had a bit of bone density loss, but I'm fine. However, I'm ready for a tubal, but the odds of me finding anyone to do it at 26? Slim!

@GitEmSteveDave_OverSleptThisMorn: DealExtreme is Hong Kong-based and is in the business of re-exporting- they take cheap items from the mainland and sell them to other countries. Ironically enough, their site is inaccessible from within the mainland. I get a worse deal buying locally (as in, factory located in the same city) than buying the same product through them (when I could use a proxy to access them; now I can't). It's quite sad.

One of the reasons I use the pump, pull, and pray form of birth control. Nearly 5% effective too!
@HIV 2 Elway: I've been using this method plus fertility awareness for years without any pregnancy scares. I wouldn't recommend it unless you trust your partner and STDs aren't an issue, but it does work.

My late, paternal grandmother worked in factories most of her life, mostly silk spinning mills in Paterson,NJ but then during WWII some of these were converted to other production needs due to the lack of silk from Japan /China /Far East. One of the funniest things I have ever heard was her telling of working at a condom factory during the war and that she and some coworkers sometimes \"hat pinned\" condoms as \"jokes\". Obviously the quality control back then was not what it is today... And even funnier was her telling this as an aged 70's widow and that my father had never even heard the story... Somewhere out there are wartime babies due to her and her coworkers...

@roguemarvel: An IUD is extremely similar except you have to be willing to check inside every now and then. I know some women are squeamish about that but it works out great for me.

People still use condoms now days? Just get snipped until you and your spouse is ready for kids, get the restoration, and you are good to go.
