<p>Bigger companies can't eat up the small ones by themselves; they need the consent of the shareholders.  That doesn't sound hostile.  It sounds voluntary.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>Actually the Vikings, Goths and Mongols ... and others ... were often much easier to deal with than the machinations of the current business world. Groups like that would show up on your borders, demand some kind of payment, and once given it, they'd go away. If you didn't honor your commitment ... e.g. Emperor Valens and the Goths in the 370s ... or you try to contrive backdoor alliances and stab them in the back, as the Jin did did with the Mongols in the early 13th century ... you got yourself into a war. Pretty cut and dried. Lots less convoluted than "proxy fights" and "creeping tender offers" and SEC filings and all the rest of that stuff.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>But, vikings and other "barbarians" have historically rarely done active hostile takeovers that weren't actually more closely related to widening their nomadic domains. The Mongols, for example, were a horse culture. Empire building was incidental to that.</p>]]>
