IIRC, the accelerator pedal was not tied to the engine but to the automatic transmission. Trouble was, the transmission had a tendency to create a high pressure hydraulic \"surge\" that would cause the actual transmission-to-engine throttle cable to open the \"real\" throttle actuator on the engine. Once that surge started, it wouldn't go away because the engine was now speeding up (as a direct result of the throttle being locked wide open by the transmission cable)<br />It was most noticable at lower speeds, which could get very dangerous, very quickly. sooner or later the engine would be going WFO (redline) and the hapless operator would be standing on the brakes to try to stop moving. Rather than trying to turn off the ignition, owners would try to steer the car and at the same time brake. Useless strategy, because the engine makes more than enough power to overcome the brakes action.<br />End result? You get to crash the car in the parking lot, which was where a great many of those Audi's crashed due to the fact the transmission failure happened during the first few seconds after the car was started.<br />And don't get me started on those GM cruise control modules that happened to be turned \"on\" (as in engage the cruise control) if the car was in nuetral and idleing at the curb. Instant catastrophic engine failure at +10,000 RPM. (or remove the floor mats)</p><p>any other mfg would have just clammed up and not said or done anything.<br />Reading about this issue on other automotive forums, there appears to be no end to people experiencing similar problems with ALL brands of vehicles.</p><p>disclaimer: I own a Toyota.  But this is one reason I do.  If and when there is a problem, Toyota is all over it. You get stuck trying to make the vehicles that appeal to everyone, unable to change for fear of losing your customer base, and ultimately becoming Buick.  You also get complacent (although Toyota now not nearly as much as GM 20 years ago), and your products start slowly losing relevance.  To wit, what was the last car that Toyota made that actually was interesting?  Not practical, not reliable, but interesting?  They've become your father's car.</p><p>Then Buick becomes cool, as they seem to be doing, and the world falls on its head.</p><p>Unrelated:  This issue.  If people knew how to drive, nobody would have died. The government said \"No way\" and Toyota had to backpedal.</p><p>I drive a car where the driver floor mat is held down by a pin that has been missing for several years now.  The mat still doesn't move but if it did, I think I'd be able to tell that something didn't feel right when I pressed the accelerator.</p><p>While on Toyota, an article on one of the news Web sites absolutely trashed the new Venza has having more plastic than a toy store and being a poor market fit to begin with. and go back to the roll out of the Toyota 'drive-by-wire' transmissions.</p><p>Toyota has known for quite some time things aren't right but knew their halo would let them skip by without addressing it The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) won't let the user shift the transmission into neutral at Wide Open Throttle (or at speed) to avoid potential damage to the transmission.  The safest bet is to KILL THE ENGINE!  Not having power steering sucks, but at speed it isn't that difficult to get the few degrees of turn you need to safely pull off the road.  Most brake boosters can hold onto manifold vacuum enough to give you one or two pumps worth of power assist.</p><p>Not only will the transmission not let you shift to Neutral, you may in a panic overshoot Neutral and hit Reverse in which case most any transmission made in the past 10 years DEFINITELY won't shift out of gear (instead the Check engine light or some diag light will pop up).</p><p>Generally speaking you can ALWAYS kill the engine.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(16610363, 'MrEvil')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","");
