I think the bag website was a horrible idea (and it was shilled horribly in the Sex and the City movie) - I don't mind investing a chunk of money in a handbag I can carry forever.

The dress website is interesting to me though - I would have loved something like this in college when I had a ton of formals and bought a new dress for each one. I might try it for some upcoming weddings.

Also - dresses are offered in size 0-10.

Well technically, dress sizes run smaller than regular sizes so a size 10 dress should fit an otherwise size 12. Unless you mean that you are a size 12 dress, which makes you a size 14.

@tn_avenger: It's pretty reasonable, considering the cost of the dresses. It's about $50 to $200 for a four day rental. But the dresses run anywhere from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars, so she's getting a better deal if she wants to wear s omething designer but could never spend the $2,000 to buy one.

@Ananelle: I can believe that. I believe designers may make about 100 of a dress but 98 of them will be sizes 0 to 8 and the other two will be 10 and a 12. So I can see how they wouldn't have a ton of selection past 8.

Unfortunately, there was a bit of a shooting incident and now there are four bullet holes in the tux jacket. No, I wasn't wearing it at the time. This is the problem with having drug dealers for neighbors and walls that are easily penetrated by 9mm rounds.

And is it me, or are sizes shrinking? I've LOST weight and my pant size has gone up.

@katia802: Yes, it's Bag, Borrow, or Steal. It's a much more complicated membership process though. Since purses can be used long-term and in a variety of occasions, you pay a monthly fee for access, then you rent according to the tier of handbag you would like. Some designer bags are much cheaper to rent. Your Louis Vuittons, Hermes, etc. are much more expensive to rent.

@thatblackgirl: I asked a CSR through chat. They carry sizes 0 to 10/12 right now and the CSR said they would "absolutely" expand their sizing.

Obviously, your selection is limited by what designers will make, so if designers stop at size 10/12, you're out of luck.

I recall hearing of a website that rented designer purses. Anybody remember that, or am I just dreaming it?

The NYT story doesn't say anything about sizing, but I'll bet anyone that the dresses only go up to a size ten or so. Sorry fatties, no couture for you!

@barb95: @roguemarvel: Renting a wedding dress - tons of places do that. Renting a designer gown that can be used as a wedding dress - that's a little harder, and has been previously mostly been excluded to the individual stores. Rent the Runway merely takes advantage of the internet.

@Oranges w/ Cheese has 2 cats! ahahaha.: They dry clean all of them. And you can't just throw them at a laundromat, either. A lot of these are probably going to be special cleaned.

@roguemarvel: It is available, a friend of mine rented her wedding dress 6 years ago. She has never regreted it.
