systems. While a promotion might be company-wide, the implementation could be wildly different from store-to-store. Newer stores might have the customer-swipe-and-sign device; an older store might still need the customer to hand his card over to the employee for swiping, with a paper slip to sign. </p><p>Upgrading to the newer interfaces can be expensive, and potentially not feasible for every store. Given that Radio Shack has been around longer than I've been around, it seems reasonable to expect that there are some which haven't been upgraded. So while the explanation above might be true at the OP's particular Radio Shack, it might not be true company-wide.</p><p>That said, I see the \"Donate to Homeless Pets\" on the swiper at Petsmart. I can say \"no\" when a clerk asks me to donate for this or that or the other thing, but when a robut pleads with me on the behalf of sad kitties... ack!</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20000667, 'raydeebug')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-20000688\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=4654\"><img        src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-4654-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=4654\">dancemonkey</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/11/radio-shack-employees-say-they-cant-force-donations.html#comment-20000688\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-11-24T10:35:53-05:00\">November 24, 2009 10:35 AM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20000688);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20000688');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>This would be similar to Safeway's system. Putting the power to press the \"I donate\" button in the hands of an associate is going to anger some.  Requiring a surprise opt in on check out will anger others. All it takes is the salesperson/cashier to turn around for just a second to get something off the shelf behind them and poof, the whole month's donation collection is gone in an instant.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20000836, 'Kogenta')\">Reply</a></div>		 	    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>                <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) -->            <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" >                 <!-- Loop through the reply comments -->        <div class=\"reply-container\" >            <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-20001027\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=159929\"><img        src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-159929-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=159929\">madanthony</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/11/radio-shack-employees-say-they-cant-force-donations.html#comment-20001027\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-11-24T12:43:21-05:00\">November 24, 2009 12:43 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20001027);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20001027');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>Not to mention the simple fact that a lot of people don't carry cash with them, or, at a store like Radio Shack or Petsmart, aren't paying in cash, and are unlikely to dig out a credit/debit card to pay with, and then dig out cash for the donation. </p><p>It's pretty much a \"damned if you do, damned if you don't\".</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20001027, 'madanthony')\">Reply</a></div>		 	    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>                <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) -->            <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" >                 <!-- Loop through the reply comments -->        <div class=\"reply-container\" >            <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-20001229\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=89677\"><img        src=\"/css/images/default.gif\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=89677\">andsowouldi</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/11/radio-shack-employees-say-they-cant-force-donations.html#comment-20001229\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-11-24T14:34:25-05:00\">November 24, 2009  2:34 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20001229);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20001229');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>I agree with you that they have to have the ability to allow donations when a person pays with cash. In my opinion people would be more likely to click the YES button on the right to continue on, thus approving the donation.</p><p>It's sneaky, and I don't like it.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20000851, 'NikonGal')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","","","","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-20000874\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=6536\"><img        src=\"/mt-static/support/assets_c/userpics/userpic-6536-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=6536\">Rectilinear Propagation</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/11/radio-shack-employees-say-they-cant-force-donations.html#comment-20000874\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-11-24T11:46:04-05:00\">November 24, 2009 11:46 AM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20000874);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20000874');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>I find it funny that so many people are complaining that people go too fast when checking out in the comments here when in ever single other post about checking out on Consumerist everyone is complaining that people who go too slow.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20000874, 'Rectilinear Propagation')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->							<div class=\"num-replies\">1 replies</div>	    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->     <!-- Loop through the reply comments -->        <div class=\"reply-container\" >            <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-20000891\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=537475\"><img        src=\"/mt-static/support/assets_c/userpics/userpic-537475-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=537475\">pecan 3.14159265</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/11/radio-shack-employees-say-they-cant-force-donations.html#comment-20000891\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-11-24T11:52:08-05:00\">November 24, 2009 11:52 AM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20000891);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20000891');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>That is pretty funny. I think the reason why there's such a dichotomy is that there's no excuse for rushing  and making mistakes and then blaming other people for them. It's an extra, what, 2 seconds to read the screen or catch the word 'donate' and hit 'no'? But blaming someone else for a mistake like that is poor consumerism. The OP who wrote to RS corporate didn't even acknowledge that it might have been his error, or even asked the RS store whether they made a mistake, or even investigated to see whether it could have shown up on the screen while he was checking out. That would be *wonderful* PR.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20001529, 'BytheSea')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-20001544\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=1523479\"><img        src=\"/css/images/default.gif\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=1523479\">Re: Your Brains</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/11/radio-shack-employees-say-they-cant-force-donations.html#comment-20001544\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-11-24T19:42:15-05:00\">November 24, 2009  7:42 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20001544);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20001544');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>The associate -could- have simply voided out the initial transaction and redone it correctly, within a certain time window (My manager told me 1 hour, but he could be BSing me). And all the RadioShack employees are right - there is no way an associate can force a donation. All we see on the POS screen is \"Prompting customer for donation...\" and at the bottom it says that we can kill the prompt by pressing Escape on the keyboard - which I guarantee 99% of RadioShack employees do. Yeah, it sucks to be out a dollar, but for the OP - look closer next time, and LiveStrong is grateful for your $1.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(20001544, 'Re: Your Brains')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-20001711\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=121959\"><img        src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-121959-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=121959\">surfphoto</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/11/radio-shack-employees-say-they-cant-force-donations.html#comment-20001711\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-11-25T08:12:25-05:00\">November 25, 2009  8:12 AM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(20001711);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=20001711');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>Nonsense.
