Yeah, it's crappy for Radio Shack to not refund it, but it's not like this type of customer service is out of the ordinary for Radio Shack.

That's ridiculous. It was Radio Shack that tricked the guy into donating, and they should refund the money, if they want to try to get it back from the charity, that's their business. They also might want to look into getting rid of a system that tries to trick customers to donate.

Actually, I see these prompts all the time. PetCo & Petsmart have had them for years.
They are an annoyance though.

I'm going to call it now that within the next 10 years there is going to be at least one occurrence of a card reader or CC company programing the readers so that before you can sign for your purchase the reader forces you to watch a 10 to 30 second commercial.

Actually I prefer it to be on the keypad rather than for them to ask me out loud in front of everybody. Atleast then you don't feel shamed into donating.

Yeah, I would rather the cashiers not have to ask. They never seem to want to ask, either. I have no problem with saying, \"not right now, thanks\" but I used to work retail so I know what it was like to have the threat of being fired held over your head if you didn't push the store credit card or ask for donations.

I will be the first to agree that stores counting on people misinterpreting the pin pad commands to rake in money for these kinds of things is skeevy, but it's also the responsibility of the customer to take time to read and understand what is on the display. If it clearly asks \"would like to donate $1 to Charity X?\" and the customer doesn't read it and just hits yes, it's their own fault. As other commenters have pointed out, pay attention to the pads.

All the PetSmart ones I've seen are \"Would you like to donate $1 to homeless pets?\" or something like that. Even when I lived in Albany, that's what It said. They could have changed it in Albany, but it's that way in Syracuse. I was at PetSmart exactly one week ago (pit stop after buying Star Trek, yippee!), and it was the same.

Actually I *do* look for this kind of stuff. My local grocery store is always shilling for some non-profit on those touchpads, and PetSmart has always asked if you want to donate to homeless animals.

Regardless, it's pretty insane Radio Shack won't (and worse, apparently, *can't* at the associate level) refund it.

I've definitely seen donation solicitations on credit card readers, and I don't think they should be there. Credit card readers should be for credit cards. But this doesn't make it The Shack's responsibility to refund the donation.

Offering the ability for someone to donate on the card reader is a good idea in the conceptual phase, but the user interface has to be done as such that its not confusing. If people are getting confused then the blame lies fully on Radio Shack's UI designers.

It is a totally different button. If you ever shop at Petco or Petsmart, you'll know. You get one prompt for PIN, then another for the donation and then the last one is for accepting the price. The screens look similar, but they say very different things. The OP had to hit \"accept\" a second time, and that should've been a red flag, to me at least.

Radio Shack is responsible for how its POS system works. If (and that's a big \"if,\" I don't know if this is the case) the prompts are somehow designed to trick people into making this donation, then the company is to blame for that and should make amends.

Again, I don't know that the prompts are manipulative. It may be that they are candid and plain, in which case this is a matter of \"caveat emptor.\" It may also be that the prompts are unclear, but not intentionally so. But if there is some reason, intended or not, which triggers people to \"donate\" when they didn't wish to, RS is ultimately responsible for that, and for making it right.

They have something very similar to this at PetSmart, but it's fairly obvious when it shows up.

However, when you've been to plenty of stores and swiped your card plenty of times, by now you should be aware of the questions it asks which are generally just \"Cash back?\" and \"Is this the correct amount?\"

While probably not intended to do so, throwing another question into the mix is bound to confuse some folks who are trained to answer \"No\" then \"Yes\".

Also...considering that LiveStrong is a co-venture with Nike...I can see where some people would want to maybe have their donations directed differently.

I don't know about Radio Shack in particular, but in my retail experience, different stores within the same company would *often* have very different payment systems. While a promotion might be company-wide, the implementation could be wildly different from store-to-store. Newer stores might have the customer-swipe-and-sign device; an older store might still need the customer to hand his card over to the employee for swiping, with a paper slip to sign.

Upgrading to the newer interfaces can be expensive, and potentially not feasible for every store. Given that Radio Shack has been around longer than I've been around, it seems reasonable to expect that there are some which haven't been upgraded. So while the explanation above might be true at the OP's particular Radio Shack, it might not be true company-wide.

That said, I see the \"Donate to Homeless Pets\" on the swiper at Petsmart. I can say \"no\" when a clerk asks me to donate for this or that or the other thing, but when a robut pleads with me on the behalf of sad kitties... ack!

Not bad at all - I donate a substantial amount of money, but to causes I choose, and causes of which I am cognizant. While I know plenty of people choose to donate to Livestrong, and that's great, it's not where I choose to donate. At the same time, lots of people don't donate to NPR like I do - and that is FINE.

Radio Shack is sort of damned if they do and damned if they don't. Putting the power to press the \"I donate\" button in the hands of an associate is going to anger some. Requiring a surprise opt in on check out will anger others. An old fashioned jar by the cash register seems to strick the right balance for me. No pressure to donate, but the opportunity is presented.

BTW, the employee says that they don't have the power to require a donation, however I'm curious about cash purchases. Do they seriously require use of the keypad by the customer for a cash purchase? I would think that for cash purchases, the power to (possibly) force a donation still is in the hands of the employee. Just guessing on that. But I'm curious if I'm right.

Jars have their own problems for stores. Unless they happen to be bolted to the countertop, unscrupulous customers will run off with any donation jars that feel heavy. I mean, people even steal the poppy donation buckets when they get put out in some places if they think they can get away with it. All it takes is the salesperson/cashier to turn around for just a second to get something off the shelf behind them and poof, the whole month's donation collection is gone in an instant.

Not to mention the simple fact that a lot of people don't carry cash with them, or, at a store like Radio Shack or Petsmart, aren't paying in cash, and are unlikely to dig out a credit/debit card to pay with, and then dig out cash for the donation.

I agree with you that they have to have the ability to allow donations when a person pays with cash. Given, the story at hand could be either the \"victim's\" own mistake, but there is still something missing in the story above when claiming that is the only way a donation can be made.

Yeah, it's just a dollar. And it's for charity. But there's still a little matter called \"honesty.\" If RS has designed this so as to \"trick\" people into donating, so that RS can look good and say they got $X in donations for Livestrong, that's still just trickery.

They should have the integrity to admit what they did.

As for stores using employees or their POS systems to solicit for charity, so that they can be the ones to take credit for their customers' donations ... that also is an unsavory practice. The money donated was that of customers, not stores, yet the stores claim the credit for it. If RS really wants to donate to Livestrong, they should just donate their own money.

In reference to the donation jar -- the problem with that is exactly how you said it, \"No pressure\". It's great for customers who don't want to feel any guilt for not donating during the holidays, but as long as a charity can get away with using more pushy, in-your-face methods of collections, they will do so. Because they work.

Few people are going to tell a charitable organization that they're being \"too aggressive\" in their methodology -- even here, no one has really said a peep of a bad word about the Lance Armstrong Foundation, only about RadioShack bungling up the delivery of the donation prompt. And besides, for people who complain about being put \"on the spot\", it's still a hell of a lot better than having a salesman try and convince you to donate, which might still end up getting you do give up the dollar, but only leaving you with the impression that you had a say in the matter...

Rather than debate the merits of digging through the Salvation Army's collection plate when we have second thoughts, why not just learn from this that one should pay more attention to the keypads he's using when he pays, and be happy that the money went somewhere besides in the pocket of the company that \"tricked\" you?

They're not arguing that the money should come back from the charity but that Radio Shack should refund that dollar themselves. Besides, accidentally hitting a button is not the same thing as having second thoughts.

No one has said anything about the Lance Armstrong Foundation because it is illogical to blame the charity for the stores POS system. It doesn't make sense to assume that a charity has some control (or any input whatsoever) into how a retail chain would change their system to ask for donations at the POS machine.

If someone can prove that they did tell Radio Shack that they have to change their machines to ask for the donation then I'm sure people will complain about them as well.

Yes they're absolutely responsible for some guy hitting yes without reading the screen right? It's the consumers responsibility to be aware of what they're hitting the yes key on.

These donation prompts are common nowadays; IKEA, PetCo, PetSmart, etc all have them and they're clearly worded and the only way to make a mistake is if someone is not paying attention to what they're hitting yes on. OP probably needs to accept his mistake and move on.

I don't know. My whole opinion is that people are always too fast and loose when checking out and paying. Radio Shack is probably taking advantage of this, and they've been known for their check-out time shenanigans for decades, but I did just confirm this at a local shack.. You are asked if you want to donate on the signature pad.

$1 to Livestrong is one thing, but I could easily see where Radio Shack could start using this same method to sell warranties, etc. Not very customer friendly, but consumers need to be a lot more alert these days, especially in times of recession when companies get more \"creative\".

Petsmart has a Donation page when you swipe a card. first it will ask if you want to donate to the humane society and if you do; there will be another 4 buttons with different denominations. I usually decline now because I rescued my first dog last December and then another one in May. i gave the humane society about $230 in 6 months. if it was financially feasable i would get another dog.

First and foremost, these 'donation' options shouldn't even automatically APPEAR in a consumer's transaction. I donate to charities all the time. But when I come to Radio Shack, I come there to make a purchase, NOT to donate. And it's only because they ADD this 'thoughtful' link to my transaction that a mistake is even made possible.

So Radio Shack, you shouldn't be adding this option anyway which subjects ANYONE to making a wrong choice. I don't want to make a choice. I want to buy batteries. Period.

But because you DO choose (as a business) to add this extra step, and any mistake is made, it's up to YOU to correct it (ie: refund).

I dunno, while I think there method is poorly planned, the customer has some responsibility to actually read the screens. I mean, this is very much akin to all these people who don't read their credit card bills and then have a \"wow\" moment when they realize they've been paying some miscellaneous fee for over a year, something that would be caught easily by spending 5 minutes just checking their statements when they show up.

Just assuming that the company is looking out for your best interests and blindly hitting ok whenever you get a prompt is just asking to get burned.

I just saw this at CVS last night - swiped my card and a \"please give us $1\" prompt came up first. Fortunately I'm careful about just hitting the accept key without reading the screen.

I don't think this belongs here. By the time you've gotten to the credit card swiping stage, your purchases are final. They should not be prompting you to purchase more stuff during the payment stage.

My local Safeway store POS asks for a donation every time I swipe my card. I've learned to stop and read the question before mindlessly hitting any button. When I see the question \"Do you want to donate $1 to charity?\", for some reason I get the impression the YES button is on the wrong side. The NO button appears on the left side of the screen, the YES button on the right. In my opinion people would be more likely to click the YES button on the right to continue on, thus approving the donation.

It's sneaky, and I don't like it.

That is pretty funny. I think the reason why there's such a dichotomy is that there's no excuse for rushing and making mistakes and then blaming other people for them. It's an extra, what, 2 seconds to read the screen or catch the word 'donate' and hit 'no'? But blaming someone else for a mistake like that is poor consumerism. The OP who wrote to RS corporate didn't even acknowledge that it might have been his error, or even asked the RS store whether they made a mistake, or even investigated to see whether it could have shown up on the screen while he was checking out. He just pointed fingers.

Yesterday I called this theft. That apparently was wrong. If the system presented the user with a choice, it wasn't theft. However, if the option to donate is easily confused with the customary \"is this amount correct\" prompt, then although it isn't theft, it is close to a scam.

Any options to donate should be perfectly clear and not a part of the primary transaction before it is completed. Any error on the customer's part should result not result in a donation through trickery.

I'm getting fed up with donation requests at checkout (\"...for the children...\") that make you feel like a cad for saying no. This, combined with the upsell (\"we have a special on Cheezits\") esp. at supermarkets is getting to be too much.

On whether or not this is a good method of taking donations - I like the way Hannafords Supermarkets handle charity. They have these little slips of paper up by the register that you can hand the cashier for a $2 or $5 donation to whatever the charity is that month, and teh cashiers don't bug you about donating. They also run food drives around thanksgiving and have a drop box for cash donations that the charity changes for every now and then.

They key is that they're not PUSHY about it, it's all just there and you can take it or leave it.

If I'm going to pressured into donate I'd rather have those little \"coupons for a cause\" deals -- that way I know exactly what's being rung up at the register. That way there's no mistakes if I choose to donate - I have to manually grab the coupon and add it to my purchase.

Just another reason why I stopped shopping at Radio Shack ages ago. I don't think they carry anything that I absolutely must have right now and can't wait for it to be delivered from Amazon / NewEgg.

If you didn't warn or ask him about the charity there is no reason for that option in the buttons to be there. It is a hope that the consumer will be too busy to notice.
There could have been better communication before the option even came up.

Some of the gas stations do the same. You are pressing 'Yes' 'Yes' to your purchase of the gas and hey you just bought a car wash along with the gas. It is sad that charities have started 'nagging' customers. Radio shack can put signs at the cash register and let customers make their choice.

The ticket could have been voided before the end of the day (within 30 minutes if it was top-up air time). This is the kind of customer that makes our place of work so difficult. They make mistakes, and they think we're responsible. I hate my job.

Sounds pretty shady to me though. The customer is just trying to pay the bill and go, not run through a gauntlet on the little credit card machine to opt-out of fees. Especially if the button is no different from the one used to verify the total.

Honest to Gawd can't these people just have a donation Jar with Lancey's picture and a yellow band on it on the counter, remove it from the fricking terminal computer system and shut the frick up? If people want to give they will!

By having it in the terminal like that it is either misleading people, interrupting them or delaying their transaction. Retail stores should not hold people hostage to THEIR charity drive, if RS wants to give to charity and brag about it for PR from their proceeds at the end of the year, let them.

RS / LA: STOP INTERFERING WITH OUR FRICKING TRANSACTIONS AND LEAVE US ALONE.

I wonder when the United Way is going to start popping up in all credit card swipe transactions everywhere. They already scam and strong arm donations out of most employees of any given Fortune 500 corporation, and 90% of the proceeds are kickbacks to administrators and donating corp's execs.

I'll have to start bringing my blood and garlic with me everywhere now, sigh.

It does get them off the hook. The write-in commenter said that the cashier can't refund the dollar from the Livestrong fund. Should Radio Shack refund every customer who can't read a screen from their own pockets? It would be hundreds of dollars a week. Or askfor reimbursement from the Livestrong fund? That would be *wonderful* PR.

The associate -could- have simply voided out the initial transaction and redone it correctly, within a certain time window (My manager told me 1 hour, but he could be BSing me). And all the RadioShack employees are right - there is no way an associate can force a donation. All we see on the POS screen is \"Prompting customer for donation...\" and at the bottom it says that we can kill the prompt by pressing Escape on the keyboard - which I guarantee 99% of RadioShack employees do. Yeah, it sucks to be out a dollar, but for the OP - look closer next time, and LiveStrong is grateful for your $1.

When I used to work in retail, when we had to process donations, we had a barcode we needed to scan or there was a button on the touchscreen. Much better (and more foolproof) than having it on the pad. Also, we could refund everything (including the donations) in a transaction. Radio Shack just has a lousy system that needs to be upgraded.

I think it would be a good idea for anybody pushing any button on a credit card swipe machine to actually spend the 5 seconds it takes to READ it. Radio Shack has to pay for extra transactions because you are too lazy to read what is on the screen? Sounds like the type of person who does not read a contract, then when some clause comes back to haunt them says they didnt have the time to read it.
