@Dondegroovily: I believe they meant that more Americans are TOASTING their own waffles at home. Hence they use more Eggos. Presumably this is because people are having more breakfast at home rather than going out.
@elangomatt: Or, to undercut surplus costs, they cut down drastically on production as their current output to sale ratio was drastically out of balance. In doing so, only select purchasers of the goods, like Mayor McCheese or Walmart, can get a hold of those Eggos.

Kellogg Plant Flood Triggers Eggo Waffle Shortage (Update1)

Nov. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Kellogg Co., the largest U.S. breakfast-cereal maker, said flooding at an Atlanta facility and repairs at a Tennessee factory will cause Eggo waffle shortages through the middle of next year.
The scarcity was triggered by September's floods in the southeastern U.S., which temporarily closed an Atlanta waffle factory, as well as by equipment problems at the company's largest waffle plant, in Rossville, Tennessee, spokeswoman Kris Charles said today in an e-mail.
\"We are working around the clock to restore Eggo store inventories to normal levels as quickly as possible,\" Charles said in the e-mail.
Kellogg said it doesn't expect the shortage to have a \"material impact\" on earnings. The Battle Creek, Michigan- based company doesn't provide sales figures for specific brands.
The \"temporary supply disruption\" contributed to the 3 percent sales decline in the North American frozen and specialty channels unit last quarter, Kellogg Chief Executive Officer David Mackay said on an Oct. 29 earnings conference call.
@hkellogg: You have absolutely diminished any work activity I will have over the next week now that I know that there is an Eggo factory somewhere here in Atlanta. Flooded and riddled with hungy crack-heads or not, I will find it and feast on the Eggos that everyone is so sorely missing.
Now, if only I can find the machines that make \"wafFULLS\" again...
I think it is a purposeful hold back of product to increase demand and cause panic buying. Soon you will only be able to buy Eggo Waffles on eBay for $20 a box.

@bohemian: I know you were joking, but in reality this can backfire. There is a concept in Eco called \"elasticity\", which basically measures how much demand will \"stretch\" based on pricing and availability. Creating a synthetic shortage usually never works in the long term... people will find other alternatives, and other businesses will step up to fill demand at a lower price.

@humphrmi: You're right, but this also assumes that companies are rational about economics. The fact is that a lot of people ... and businesses ... are not actually rational and have not always worked things out this way in advance. In this case there's no guarantee that Kellogg's management hasn't decided that they might not be able to get away with this tactic, just this once. Even the best people and companies sometimes come to think of themselves as being \"the exception to the rule,\" or to believe they can \"game the markets\" in ways that usually don't work out.
That said, it doesn't seem probable they'd be doing this. I just don't think it's safe to assume it's an impossibility because Kellogg's management \"knows better.\" They may not in fact \"know better.\"
@bohemian: Jeez, imagine the shipping fees on Eggos! The seller would charge a $15 handling fee, then make the buyer to pay for the dry ice/gel packs and the overnight shipping.
They simply fired every employee as a cost cutting measure and moved the entire operation to China.

Given the state of the economy, it's no surprise that the Strategic Waffle Reserves have been depleted. During good economic times when waffles are abundant, the government stashes excess waffle production in sealed caverns below New Mexico and Arizona.
In order to stabilize the market, the Fed ordered massive releases of waffles from the Strategic Waffle Reserves and supplies have not rebounded.
I also blame lead-tainted waffle batter from China.

I was told by the head frozen food clerk that one of their plants had massive flood damage. Supposedly no other waffles besides Buttermilk and Homestyle until 2010
Now is the time to break your slave like addiction to Eggos. I bought a Cusinart waffle maker for about $10 at Bed Bath & Beyond or LNT when they still existed. When I do make a batch I make a quadruple batch and freeze the leftovers. The waffle maker even came with a basic recipe book.
I think this is the first sign of the end of the world. There will be Eggo rationing. Then fights breaking out in stores, then looting for Eggos. Cue the Mad Max scenes.
I blame that sun guy from the Jimmy Dean sausage commercials. He's always so chipper.... Probably from eating all the Eggos!

As the frozen food manager at a major chain store i received a notice that eggo products would be in short supply due to a lysteria finding at one of their plants and that i was to continue to order the product as usual even if out of stock until the problem was fixed.

I wonder if Kellogg's is being secretive about the waffle shortage or if they're just slow to respond to inquiries.
I hadn't actually noticed the shortage, as I'm an oatmeal-for-breakfast kinda gal. If there were a shortage of Quaker oatmeal, I'd totally notice.
