@hi: There may not be a wrong way to eat short of choking on food, but instructions on how to easily remove bones are not well known to everyone.

Similarly, people who live near the sea have tricks for quickly de-boning fish or de-shelling shrimp (I know my dad has shown me a few tricks from his childhood on a small island), and though other less elegant methods may suffice, there's nothing wrong with learning a better, more efficient technique.

As for whether this actually affects taste, I think it does. I know if I just eat wings off the bones, the meat in the middle doesn't get any marinade with it, so it doesn't taste as good. This seems like a quick way to get rid of that problem, minor as it may seem.

I skip the last step of removing the big bone. After removing the small bone I just stick the whole wing in my mouth and pull the big bone out.

According to this video, I eat wings the \"wrong\" way apparently. I find the cartilage not as tasty as this guy, and I don't eat it, so I'll keep my 30 seconds per wing not de-boning it and enjoy the same amount of meat as I always would to boot :).

@gqcarrick: Well, as someone who grew up in Western NY, and went to College in Buffalo working as a wing cook while I did so, and who was once a runner-up in a wing-eating contest, I can point out a few things.

One, the person in the video is clearly not from Buffalo as it's clear the wings aren't Buffalo wings, they seem to have basically no sauce on them, and they are being dipped into a creamy pink sauce, maybe the kind you dip a blooming onion into. True Buffalo wings have a sauce made up of two things, hot sauce (preferably Frank's Red Hot) and if a milder flavor is desired, cut with melted margarine. The dipping sauce should be chunky bleu cheese dressing, not ranch and not anything pink.

As to technique, really you should take your time and savor the wings, but if speed is desired, you eat the piece shown in the video by seperating the bones at one end, flipping back one of the bones at the intact joint so that the bones are touching (thus essentially turning the wing inside-out) inserting into your mouth and pulling the bones out. this can be done in significantly less time than it takes to chew the meat, thus making the chewing the now time-critical element of eating.

That said, this video may be a good option if you are going to serve wings to kids, since with the unseasoned wings you are making an unbreaded chicken nugget.

As a person who has been born and raised in buffalo. Wings can have any type of sauces on them, they don't need to be a type of hot sauce or even have mild. I do have to try this though.

My way of eating them, is just eat until I just have the middle meat left and break apart the phone and no middle just sides.

I always felt that the drumsticks were more problematic with all the flesh in the weird places. I found the flat ones to be more convenient.

I was born in the wrong era; I'm a caveman eater.

I love to eat every last piece of marginally edible tissue from every piece of chicken (or steak, or pork) I can get my grubby hands on. Sometimes I even crack the bones and eat the marrow too.

When I get done with a chicken wing, it looks like it's been picked clean by a pond of piranhas.

That video gets you almost there. After you pull the bones out, gnaw the soft ends off. Enjoy your carnivorous side, folks!

@KernelM: I always have a problem with taking multiple bites from large items with chopsticks. It seems impolite to me, like sticking your fork in the middle of a big piece of steak and gnawing off of it. Wow, and here I thought I was the only one who knew this trick! For some reason, there are people who find it unnerving. I once did this when we were dining out with my (now ex-) mother-in-law. She stared at me as I did this with a wing. She was genuinely shocked. What saved me then was my sister-in-law, who was also there, thought it was a great way to eat wings and started doing it herself.

There's a place in St Louis called Culpepper's, which makes THE most amazing wings (secret sauce - they won't tell you what's in it, although I think one ingredient is Tabasco) and serves them with blue cheese dressing. This is the only time I will ever eat that dressing, is with those wings.

FWIW I tried this technique this weekend at the pub. Turns out either I'm thicker than I thought or there's more finesse to this technique. I couldn't quite get the little bones out. The small bone was a snap [ha!] but twisting out the large bone, especially when my hands were covered in greasy sauce, only resulted in heartbreak. Lots of failures and mouthfuls of rye beer later, I gave up. But, after all that, I had a swimming head and a belly full of wings, so I'm calling it a win.

Clearly more research and practice is called for.
