I agree... that picture is not only doctored, it's been done by what appears to be a rank amateur. I just goof around with PS and I could have done better then that. As Eldritch points out, the line from hip to leg doesn't even come close to matching and if you connected the two it would be a ridiculous parody of the human hip line.
Demi needs to just give it up gracefully and admit that she's human.
@MinorAnnoyance: I think maybe you should take a figure drawing class. As gerrylum points out above, her legs would line up. This pose looks different naked than clothed and the gathered fabric completely explains the gab between the dress ends and her skin.

@Scatter: People's bodies generally are symmetrical. Identical and perfect, no, symmetrical, yes. If one side of your face in a photo was an inch lower than the other side, it'd be noticeable, even though your face is not identical on each side.
@MinorAnnoyance: I don't think Demi gets the blame for this one; she'd look plenty \"human\" if the hips in the photo matched. Even with Photoshop it's amazing what photographers can do with pose, lighting and lenses.

Not only is it a fake, its a really crappy one.
if that IS the real photo, she's so severely anorexic that her skeleton has softened and bent in ways that would require casts to fix.

It's not even just the angle of the hip that tells you the photo is doctored. The entire thing has been airbrushed, dodged and burned to hell.
This looks shopped. I can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.
I disagree that it is photoshopped, looking at the claimed original, it appears that her left leg is positioned slightly forward of her right. In other words, she is not standing perfectly square and upright. So her hips are shifted and her leg is bent slightly, just where her thumb joint meets her leg.

I don't think this looks shopped either. Apparently the hoax-callers are completely ignoring the possibility of a marginally constrictive undergarment covered by the draping fabric, which would be perfectly capable of making such an indentation.

You know, I thought it was definitely shopped at first, but looking at it in detail, it's probably airbrushed and whatnot, but there's no missing chunk. Hips don't flow smoothly into your thighs. Her thighs have some meat on them, is all. The placement of the sash really adds to the optical illusion. If I were at home and could pull out my tablet and draw over the image, I'd draw her skeleton in and show that her arms actually ARE the same length and her hips and shoulders are tilted, as are her legs...
Not to say that it hasn't been photoshopped to make her look skinnier. It's entirely possible that someone trimmed a bit from her sides, but if they did, they trimmed about the same amount from her hips as her thighs.
@swearint: yeah, been saying this all along. Every once in a while you see these shots which just look odd when you scrutinize a certain part of it. It kind of reminds me of when you've been staring at a word all day long and it starts to suddenly become not a real word. Ok, most people probably have no clue what I'm talking about, but I swear this is kind of like that.
Also I think this is another good example of how surprisingly inaccurate our mental image of the human forms are. If you've ever seen those mannequins from a figure drawing class, they're full of lines because humans are ridiculously bad at getting the exact proportions of a human right.

Replace the square brace with an angle bracket and 'blah' with an URL. The key is not to close the tag. I don't know why that's the case but if you close the image tag it doesn't work.
@swearint: I'm with you. I think her hips are just not perfectly horizontal. The supposed \"missing hip\" is because her leg doesn't bend until *after* it's under the clothing, so we're not seeing the bend.

Also the length on her hands are not the same in this photo, so that indicates that her torso is turned slightly to the left while her legs the other direction, thus showing a different angle to her hips. Had she taken this picture with everything facing forward, it would be a boring shot.

Sometimes people are caught in weird poses and look awkward on camera. It's not a good picture, but I don't know if I can agree that the shape of her hip has been altered.

Yes, this happens all the time., the weird pose thing.
The angle of her bent leg, the way the camera is posed - this could indeed be a real shot. It's funny how we think everything HAS to be symmetrical, even if in real life, we know it sometimes isn't.

I thought that most people understood that magazine photos, esp. fashion mag photos, were photoshopped to within an inch of life.
Then Mr. Sam commented, with real surprise, \"Wow, Demi really looks good doesn't she, how old is she? @SadSam: Yeah, and even when she appears on TV she's got perfect makeup and perfect hair, so she's covering up whatever wrinkles she has. But regardless of that, she still is amazingly beautiful.
If she were wearing some kind of small but tight tight panty, I could see the flesh of her hip being pulled in like that. However I think she's a little too bony to have that much flesh to be squeezed, so I'm going with photoshop.
The curve of the hip and the angle of the leg below the dress do not match up even if she had an indentation in her hip. The other tell tale glitch is the gathering on the two edges of fabric of the dress. It is obviously a thin drapey fabric. For it to stick out like that it would have to be padded with something. If it was stiffened like with a starch it would not have the smooth round curve. The image defies physics and is photoshopped within an inch of its life.
I can think of only one PS job that is worse than this one:

Think of a picture of a television or movie actor as the human version of the pictures of food used in fast food advertisements. Anyone with half a brain knows that the pictures of the food are all faked.
@AngryK9: Anyone with more than half a brain knows that advertisers get into a lot of trouble for faking food. If something other than the food is what's being sold in the ad, yes, you can fake it, but otherwise you can't use fake stuff to depict the real food you're selling.

@mythago: You're kidding right? The subjects in food commercials are also given 'make up' to make them more appealing on camera.
They might get into trouble for really stretching the truth out of proportion, but what you get in the restaurant rarely looks exactly like the items on the menu (if you are in the sort of place with pictures) or TV.
Packaged food I have found to have a disclaimer of sorts on the front of the package like \"Serving suggestion\" with the contents looking more or less like what's in the box.

@MikeM_inMD: We've posted about other grossly unrealistic Photoshop jobs done on advertising models, and this is part of the same phenomenon. Only in this case, the photographer himself insists that the picture has been modified.
Magazines' and advertisers' insistence on doing this leads to us being surrounded by media that features almost comically unrealistic bodies. See: [consumerist.com]

I'm betting on both answers. She looks like she's standing with her hips not exactly square, but yeah, I don't see how the clothing would stay up like that (then again I do know that swimsuit models use double-sided tape and other tricks to keep things in place...).
I suspect someone took a pose where her hip on that side looked smaller because of her stance and then made it smaller still.
So, everybody's right. Now how about the rest of us enjoy a fresh homemade batch of cookies or some other delicious treat in celebration of not striving to look like that ever in any way?

Kidos to the photographer for actually going on record that he thinks the cover shot was Photoshopped -- especially considering he's pretty much biting the hand that feeds him.
This is Photoshopped. Load the image from Twitpic into any image editor and zoom in on the area in question. You'll see:
a.) Perfectly vertical edge border between her skin and white area adjacent
b.) artifact in and above the fabric roll, about even with her wrist
c.) Messed up lightened areas on the inside of her arm where there should be shadowing.
Why do they even bother? It's not like Ms. Moore isn't in shape...
They need to treat this kind of thing in the same manner as wrestling.
There should be warnings that things like \"Hi, I'm Demi Moore. This picture in no way represents what I really look like. I pay professionals to make me look like this. So, kids, don't try this at home..\"

This is by far not the first example of this. Rembrandt is known to have used fabric to \"disconnect\" the legs anatomically like this same thing in order to add more motion to a picture. In fact, I'd be shocked if the person that did this to this picture hadn't seen the Rembrandt example in art school.
The mag can't possibly pay for the publicity this is getting them! This will be one of their best selling issues!

I don't see how there can me any question that this is Photoshopped, because she has never in her life had that tiny a waistline. Hell, the more I look at it, the more it looks like her head was Photoshopped onto someone else's Photoshopped body!
She's so fat, they had no choice but to hide that bulbous hip of hers. Besides, everyone likes women's bodies to look like 12-year-old boys anyways, am I right?
Photo's been shopped alright, but I don't think it's the hip. Look at the waist hip ratio...she is standing at an angle which makes her hip look flatter.

I think the real test would be to look at other photos from the same shoot. I can't imagine they only took one photo of her in that outfit. That could be some clue as to whether or not is was photoshopped. Because if she has the same deformity in other photos, we would know it isn't doctored and that Demi just has some kind of hip disorder.

There is no way that is the untouched photo. Her legs don't even match up! Jesus Christ. This is why I can't buy fashion magazines. I almost agree with the French (or British, I can't remember) government who tried to put warning labels that images were photoshopped on ads and magazines.

Demi is likely wearing some sort of corset to bring her waist in. She is also shifting all of her weight to one side, which is a common modeling pose.
This photo likely was photoshopped, since it was on a magazine cover, and her hip may have even been altered, but if so it's not nearly as egregious as people have been making it out to be.
@Eldritch: It's the French -- they want a warning label, but do not yet have one. Granted, when your prime minister has to have his love-handles photoshopped out of a news photo, you have a problem. On a good note, the German fashion magazine \"Brigitte\" announced that they would stop using professional models for their covers claiming that these models do not adequately represent their readers.
