AT&T Says Their Rep Doesn't Want To Die

-->AT&T is very concerned that you know the TRUTH about the chat transcript from yesterday's "AT&T Rep Wants To Die" post that we picked up after hit the front page of Digg. They say the screengrab is "doctored" and "fraudulent." We say, who cares? It's a hilarious online pass-around that any normal internet user would takes with a grain of salt. By the time we had picked it up, it was already old news. In any event, they provided us with the REAL conversation between rep Darlene and customer Robert:

"[13:14:24] Darlene: I apologize for the problem. Please contact an AT&T Wireless representative at 1.800.331.0500. Unfortunately I do no have access to that service.

[13:15:15] robert XX: i'll just jump off a bridge.

[13:17:15] Darlene: I'll be right with you.

[13:17:39] robert XX: lol

[13:18:46] Darlene: I apologize. They will be happy to assist you at that number.

[13:27:38] Darlene: It has been my goal to provide you with OUTSTANDING service and that you are VERY SATISFIED with the way I've handled your request. In addition to the survey link at the end of this chat, you may receive a call asking about the level of service I have provided. I hope that you are VERY SATISFIED with my service today. Thank you for choosing AT&T!

[13:35:06] Darlene: Thank you for contacting AT&T. Please use the CLOSE button when you are ready to exit our chat session.

[13:49:37] Darlene: I haven't heard from you in awhile. Do you wish to continue this chat?

[13:56:58] Darlene: I am ending this chat session since I have not heard from you. If you wish to chat with AT&T again, please open a new chat session. We look forward to serving your needs now and in the future.

[13:57:13] info: Thank you for chatting with us. Please click the "Close" button on the top right of the chat window to tell us how we did today."

AT&T PR guy said in the email that accompanied this:

You were given a doctored screen grab – here is the actual transcript of the conversation.

Note the time stamps – the "I'll be right with you" came exactly two minutes after the last interaction. She was saying she'd be with him in a minute b/c it had been a little while. I believe that might actually be automated response if there's a two minute lull in the chat. In any event, what you guys were handed was not reality.

PR guy misses the point. It didn't hit the front page of Digg and get passed around and hit the front pages of other large sites because it was a source document, it was because it was funny. It doesn't matter if it was "true," it spoke the truth, the truth being that AT&T customer service, and indeed, a lot of customer service these days, has the tendency to be comically inept. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go factcheck some lolcats. I know for a fact that there is no way that cat is riding an invisible bicycle.

Yeah, it does matter if it's not true. You need to go back to j-school (if you ever went).

Is this a consumerist site or just a place to submit and post funny stories that may or may not be factual?

It's looking more and more like the latter. And losing credibility every day.

No, the truth is that the original "story" was not the truth. The facts as presented were false. The fact that the falsehood makes for a better story is not relevant to the FACTS. End of story.

I worked for AT&T after they bought out Bellsouth. I truly believed that this was a real. Reps are under constant pressure with them. AT&T promised that our contract and benefits would remain the same after takeover. They did. BUT AT&T increased the sales quota by nearly 200% and then screamed at the union to let them hire Temps(Term employees as they call them). They pretty much replaced all of us with people making half as much and because hardly anybody lasts the six months for benefits they get out of those too. You wonder why they don't know anything?

Other than Phil's posts none of the problems I have bother me that much. Unlike a problem I have with Verizon or Comcast, I don't have to come back to Consumerist should the problems get that big.

Regarding reading the comments, I should hope Ben, Meg and the team read the comments. Maybe not each and every one, but we as readers are their customers. Reading the comments can give them an overview of how we feel about the site, the articles they post, and how we feel about them as a business. Given Ben's comment below, it doesn't look like "they are taking this seriously". I'm willing to give them a pass - hopefully it was an oversight, and everyone can learn from it. Time will tell.

Nitpicky? It was a false story portrayed as real. And then when retracted the defense was that it still "spoke the truth". I get the funny part, I really do, and I have no problem with the obvious jokes around it... but instead of saying "boy wouldn't that have been funny", Consumerist responded to the correction with "It doesn't matter if it was 'true,' it spoke the truth". The logic doesn't hold.

It's a blog, on the internet, that gives good information and sometimes makes jokes. Jokes are funny, and we laugh at them.

This doesn't take away from the rest of the stories, it just means in that one case, there was joking going on. To say that because of one joke post on a blog owned by Consumer's Union makes everything they put out a lie is not only a stretch of logic, but pretty much overall nitpickiness and anal retentiveness. Saying this would be the same as me saying that because we disagree on this one topic, one of us should die and stop wasting the other's oxygen. Except that would be stupid too, to make that jump. See how logic and normal escalation of things works?

Here's a wetnappy. Please wipe off the pole when you remove it so we don't all get sick. Please, think of the children.

As for Phil, when he first started out, he did go overboard with his articles, but I think he's calmed down a lot since then. I'm sure the criticisms that were posted helped to point out his errors, but if people don't like him they shouldn't click on his stories. If he isn't getting page views (which are how blogs get money), then he isn't doing his job and that will look bad to his bosses. There are better ways of doing this than whinging on about it.

First, in relation to other comments, some people take things too seriously. Did you just compare Consumerist to Fox news? Really?

Second, why is it that it took At&T literally 24 hours to throw up a PR report about how the rep didn't want to die, yet all the other problems they have (including the fact there is no "one system" for all the various areas and companies they've sucked up over the years which makes us all call 84 numbers to start and then get trasnferred 25 times by people who have no idea where to transfer us) are never fixed? At&T needs to concentrate of the real issues and stfu about stupid stuff like this.

Also, post was funny, if a bit old by the time it got posted here, and I still laughed.

I imagine it also does damage to the power of the Consumerist in influencing corporations to do the right thing. If they print lies and say they don't care, then companies can simply say that the site prints lies to entertain people and their stories have no credibility.

That's the same line Rush Limbaugh took at the end of his show when he realized that he had fallen for and be railing against a fake Obama quote.

I am also reminded of a Fox lawsuit - defending their right to lie:

During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre's claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so.

I would think that there would be some type of ToS governing the release of transcripts to limit it to internal use only.
