reducing piracy, making it easier on the customers, etc.  There is some truth to the making it easier spin they might use.  Microsoft has somehow figured out how to make ISOs that have incredible problems burning properly.  To get them to go, one must typically throttle back their DVD burner to the slowest speed possible, disable any buffer underrun protection, and pray.</p><p>I've given up trying to burn DVDs from their ISOs and have gone the USB bootable flash drive route.</p><p>As to the articles reference cost of shipping...I wonder if Lenovo is charging to send it from the manufacturing facility in Malaysia?  Or, perhaps it's being posted from China?</p><p>Last night I completed the free upgrade qualification form on a Toshiba notebook that I bought in July. Looks like Big Blue has decided to get a bit mean.</p><p>Honestly, I'd call up IBM/Customer Service and ask them to send it for free. They haven't begun to get the bugs out. You could be stuck like I am. I had to get a new laptop (my old one went up in flames) and it was at the beginning of the Vista period. Mine has Vista on it, but it isn't meant to. In all cases the OS has been surprisingly stable, and that includes using versions of antivirus utilities uncertified for Win7. If there's a showstopper found at launch I'll be greatly surprised. Everything else runs like a dream, but our wifi keeps dropping and it's only on Snow Leopard. My Macbook runs Leopard and I never have dropped connections.</p><p>I never expect an OS to be perfect straight out of the gate, but I'm hoping Apple will have a bug fix soon. That said, I expect Win7 to have some problems just because that's the nature of things. I have had the RC on my laptop since it came out, and installed the RTM on my desktop a couple days after it hit MSDN. Never has it locked up or randomly shut down and all my programs work just peachy on it. Build 7000 that I had prior to this had its quirks, but was still very usable. Vista had a LOT more issues inherently on launch then most other OS's. To me as long as it's disclosed ahead of time, it's totally fair. The free upgrade was actually a huge selling point, as I had been running the Windows 7 beta for close to six months now.</p><p>Let me tell you-- going from 7 *back* to Vista has been brutal.  You may think 7 is better than Vista, but trust me, you have no idea until you get stuck with a Vista machine.</p><p>Note: I never had a *problem* with Vista; I got it late enough in the update cycle to avoid the birthing troubles. It just says free upgrade in the image just like the one that is posted on the top of the post.  It may say terms and conditions apply but there is nothing up front to disclose that it will cost money to get the upgrade to you. I wanted to use the Control Panel, but had the gall to want to view it in the Classic style. Now, all that happens when you want to open the control panel is a hard locked system! In addition to the price, the fulfillment process is clunky and slow, with many people being rejected initially because their laptop serial number was not in the system.
