The current situation puts DVDs and Blu Rays in the loss leader column as they are selling on new release at or under cost at retail. If everyone has the same price on the exact same merchandise there is no incentive for the consumer to follow the loss leader into any particular establishment. I don't pay full price for anything (Amazon is great!), but I do buy them.  Why not?  I may pay a few bucks more, but I do see a difference between a lot of DVDs and Blu-Rays-- especially with newer films.</p><p>I still don't buy into the idea that we should all give up media for downloads. DVD players didn't play VHS tapes so if people needed a new player to replace a broken machine, they would buy another VHS.</p><p>Also, I would expect that Blu-ray figure to include Playstation 3 of movies.  i wont pay unless they go on sale for around $15, and even then i research the movies on avsforum to make sure the transfer is good quality.</p><p>apd09 was speaking of blu-ray disks, not players.  yes i see the relation, but my first blu-ray player purchase was mostly for upscaling dvds.  there was a huge market for that a little while back, and there probably still is.</p> are PS3s, and the fact that his 5.4 million DVD Players doesn't count PS2 sales, as the PS2 wasn't available until slightly more than 3 years after DVD's came out. If you go out to 4 years, and count PS2 sales, you'll find that the PS2 alone sold nearly 8 million dvd players in it's first year on the market. I could, however, drive a car between the clothing racks since they're spaced so far apart now.</p><p>But they still have a couple big bulk bins of $5 and $7 DVDs in the main aisles.</p><p>Only on a rare occasion do I buy DVDs or Blu-Rays at Walmart. Last few times I've looked there for Blu-Ray discs everything was $30 and up. The same titles can be bought at Amazon for around $20-22, and shipping is only about $3, so they're still cheaper than at Wal-Mart.</p><p>Heck, until last week I hadn't made a purchase at Best Buy in years, but I found the 2nd season set of \"Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles\" selling for the same price as Amazon ($44.99 on sale). If Wal-Mart had been selling the set (they weren't), it undoubtedly would have been $60 or more. It's tacky, it's crappy, and who the heck wants to dig through a massive bin of DVDs? Target displays their DVDs in neat rows, whether they're $5 or $20. And they have them up front too, again, in neat rows. It would have been better had they never abandoned the old rack that the cheap movies (I believe they were 2 for $11 at the time) were in that was not organized but at least made all of the movies visible and neatly shelved.  I think that the reason they switched to the bins is that people purchased more movies from the bins because they felt as though they were finding a gem when they dug through to the bottom of the bin and found that one copy of Jaws. Back when Wal-Mart still used Anderson reps for the movies, I even had a rep tell me that some stores intentionally left their value bin looking like a bomb went off in it instead of being neatly stacked as our store attempts to keep our bin because the movies sold better when the bins were a mess.  Another thing that is being changed is that the $13/$9 island is being reorganized by genre and \"quality of title\" (i.e. the ones that make the most money or sell the most copies) rather than alphabetically. As for blu-ray displays, the number of blu-ray displays has increased. We have gone from having the one Sony blu-ray display to having a new blu-ray display that shipped last month, a Vizio endcap with blu-ray hooked up to it, and entire island with four TVs hooked up to a blu-ray player. We got a PS3 a year ago though, and have bought a handful of BluRays since then though. Additionally they have 4 redbox machines at the front entrance with the soda machines.</p><p>It does make sense to me since I used to always go to walmart on payday and pick out a movie. The raw profit margin is below 3% for new releases.  For every movie stolen, you have to sell another 34 just to break even.  The business model has been a loss for retailers for quite some time.
