The Wall Street Journal reports Walmart is cutting back DVD displays as part of its effort to appeal to "higher-end" (read: Target) shoppers.

This means no more display cases to pimp the latest releases. Reporter Nat Worden quotes a stock analyst who says this means DVD and Blu-ray are dead in Walmart's eyes:

"We think the new strategy implies Wal-Mart no longer sees DVDs and Blu-ray discs as traffic drivers," J.P. Morgan analyst Imran Khan said.

Phoenix movie blogger Colin Boyd hints the situation could be the tipping point that kills the movie industry's cash cow:

The studios count on Wal-Mart to move over 30% of all of their product, and in an down environment overall for home video sales and rentals, that's probably not good news for industry. However, it could be seen as another door opening for online retailers, like NetFlix and Amazon.

There's not a direct correlation there, but online could see a small spike from it. Will it impact sales in stores? Absolutely, although I don't know that we'll be able to say how much until the first quarter of next year, because DVD sales are always brisk around the holidays.

It definitely seems people haven't been agog at buying up DVDs anymore. How many DVDs do you buy in a year? In a decade?

It did wonders for ammunition sales. When Obama was elected, the rumor that he was going to attack handgun ammo caused sales to sky-rocket. All the ammo manufacturers have had to hire more employees to try to meet the demand. All because of a RUMOR.

As for elitistism? Hardly. This site shows how far down the line of lazy, incompetent American's we've become and as far as I am concerned there is no excuse for this. It's downright embarassing. If you want to witness how we used to dress in public? Travel to Europe and walk around a mall. Big difference. I think a lot of us have lost self-respect and don't care.

I check these in for another major retailer. The raw profit margin is below 3% for new releases. For every movie stolen, you have to sell another 34 just to break even. The business model has been a loss for retailers for quite some time. The retailer is basically paying for sales, not profit.

Though I agree, Blu-Ray are ridiculously expensive for whatever it is they do. Besides, I hate it when people try to convince me that whatever format I have is obsolete, because it means I'll eventually have to buy my favorite movies on the new format which means I'll have to spend more money. Eventually I'll cave and swap my Princess Bride VHS for a DVD, but right now I'm too stubborn to even do that, let alone Blu-Ray.

My favorite old record store in a basement downtown (populated by creepy old men that look like they live with their parents still), the occasionally awesome Goodwill find (even though sometimes the clientele are interesting to say the least), my favorite super sketchy off-the-highway diner (don't get me started on what I've seen there).
I think this is just Walmart saying to the studios that they need to drop prices (that they sell to Walmart at). The current situation puts DVDs and Blu Rays in the loss leader column as they are selling on new release at or under cost at retail. If everyone has the same price on the exact same merchandise there is no incentive for the consumer to follow the loss leader into any particular establishment. They are simply angling their 30 percent market share into a price break so they can sell for less and still make margin, even if it is a tiny bit on each unit sold.

I don't think it is as much a move away from DVDs as a move away from the awful $5 movie bins that waste associate time with the constant mess that has to be cleaned up around it and the customers who insist that someone help them dig through the bin to the bottom looking for one movie that they swear they saw in the bin a week ago that hasn't been in the bin for three months. It would have been better had they never abandoned the old rack that the cheap movies (I believe they were 2 for $11 at the time) were in that was not organized but at least made all of the movies visible and neatly shelved. I think that the reason they switched to the bins is that people purchased more movies from the bins because they felt as though they were finding a gem when they dug through to the bottom of the bin and found that one copy of Jaws. Back when Wal-Mart still used Anderson reps for the movies, I even had a rep tell me that some stores intentionally left their value bin looking like a bomb went off in it instead of being neatly stacked as our store attempts to keep our bin because the movies sold better when the bins were a mess. Another thing that is being changed is that the $13/$9 island is being reorganized by genre and "quality of title" (i.e. the ones that make the most money or sell the most copies) rather than alphabetically. As for blu-ray displays, the number of blu-ray displays has increased. We have gone from having the one Sony blu-ray display to having a new blu-ray display that shipped last month, a Vizio endcap with blu-ray hooked up to it, and entire island with four TVs hooked up to a blu-ray player. The removal of the $5 bin in some stores (ours still has the bin and a new inline section) may also be to help make the transition to blu-ray instead of DVD.

There's a reason they're so profitable, and it's not because they're truly the friendly provider of everyday low-cost prices.
It's fun to see their fans fall for the hype, however.

And they ALWAYS stick them out in the middle of a narrow aisle at the local store. So there are usually 4 or 5 people gathered around digging through them, half blocking the aisle so that other shoppers have to try to maneuver around them with the store's new, more gigantic shopping carts.

@ZenMasterKel: Wal-Mart's prices aren't really that good either. Last few times I've looked there for Blu-Ray discs everything was $30 and up. The same titles can be bought at Amazon for around $20-22, and shipping is only about $3, so they're still cheaper than at Wal-Mart.

Heck, until last week I hadn't made a purchase at Best Buy in years, but I found the 2nd season set of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" selling for the same price as Amazon ($44.99 on sale). If Wal-Mart had been selling the set (they weren't), it undoubtedly would have been $60 or more. Wal-Mart may be the king of cheap on most things, but not on Blu-Ray and DVDs.

Wal-Mart is right in that it should scale back its cheapo DVD bins. It's tacky, it's crappy, and who the heck wants to dig through a massive bin of DVDs? Target displays their DVDs in neat rows, whether they're $5 or $20. And they have them up front too, again, in neat rows. Wal-Mart's flaw was in dumping them into big bins to begin with, and thinking that people have the patience to go through them to get one good gem (which usually does not exist in the bin - it's like getting a cereal box that's missing a toy).

Personally, I have Netflix and we got a PS3 for BOTH the gaming capacity AND the fact it plays Blu-ray. My thing has always been if I know I'm going to watch a movie more then twice I'm going to buy it. I think this move has more to do with people not spending their "disposable" income on movies to purchase and just dealing with renting them from places like Netflix until they can afford to buy again.

If you go out to 4 years, and count PS2 sales, you'll find that the PS2 alone sold nearly 8 million dvd players in it's first year on the market. Doesn't make Blu-ray seem so widely adopted, to me.

Your opinion, while interesting, is irrelevant in the face of facts:

BDA President, Andy Parsons...counts 10.7 million Blu-ray players sold in the United States by the end of 2008, about two and half years since they first became available. By comparison, three years after DVD was launched, there were 5.4 million DVD players in consumers homes.
