Unfortunately, Ralph Lauren doesn't want to be mocked for its own advertising, so it started sending out DMCA takedown notices to blogs who have posted the ad—both Boingboing and Photoshop Disasters have been ratted out to their ISPs.
We're not sure this will teach Ralph Lauren anything about the Streisand Effect, but it's still fun to see a company mangle its own heavy-handed intimidation tactics.

Update: Our original post said that Photoshop Disasters caved to the takedown notice, but that was incorrect according to several readers. A commenter below writes, "Photoshop Disasters didn't cave - Blogspot policy is to remove the offending post until the investigation is complete. PsD had a post up about it yesterday." We've changed the wording in the first paragraph to more accurately reflect what happened.

"The criticism that Ralph Lauren doesn't want you to see!" [Boingboing]

I'm sorry, but she looks like the girls who diet their way to thinness not taking into account something called nutrition. A true good looking woman has muscles. I won't say they have breasts or a decent rear end because women come in all shapes and genetics is a crap shoot.

@RobertBaron: I personally don't agree with the idea that any publicity is good publicity. Ralph Lauren is going to look like 1) they think women should be insanely thin and 2) lawsuit happy bullies.

I can not recall hearing anything bad about RL before this. The only other story about them on this site is over an ugly pair of pants in 2006. So I doubt that they're trying to be thrilled about bad publicity for publicity's sake.

Also, this sucks for the model too. Her most well known photo is going to be one where she looks ridiculous.

I guess I don't understand why they had to take it this far? I can understand being frustrated that the model gained weight (which, FWIW, I think she should, if she's even close to this gaunt) and knowing you're going to have to pair her down, but really? Giving a girl a seriously curvy waist when she's that skinny is a dead giveaway.

FWIW, I worked for the company at the time, especially closely to the graphics department that "created" this image. The model had gained weight and he-llo, rather than booking another model, or choosing a different pose, they decided to just make her look thinner in post-production. I know several higher-ups were opposed to the publishing of the image, but it was eventually approved, only to be criticized internally when everyone realized how absolutely ridiculous it looked.

You can technically argue that they're not "real" women as well since they're been Photoshopped all to hell, but it's still annoying to hear.

A company like Blogspot, and any ISP/Host really, will usually just comply with a DMCA rather than actually consult with a lawyer or risk a lawsuit, both of which are much more costly than just deleting the page. BoingBoing is a different sort of place though, as Fair Use is one of the most covered causes on the site!
