While the agency doesn't have the personnel or the budget to tackle this, it would be great if any product promising any health benefit had to receive FDA approval before they could peddle this crap on the street?

@H3ion: Yeah, like the health benefits of Vioxx? You know, the one that the FDA approved that was withdrawn by Merck after possibly causing thousands of heart attacks?
If Pfizer gave them enough money, the FDA would approve cocaine.
@eccsame: Way to buy the propaganda. The only reason Vioxx was pulled was as a CYA to avoid legal fees from dipshit lawsuits. MANY patients still mourn the loss of Vioxx, because it worked great.

@H3ion: As I posted in a comment about a month ago, the FDA's jurisdictional hands are tied on this matter. The DSHEA of 1994 is responsible. Until it's repealed there is nothing the FDA can do.
And if you think that will ever ... guess again. If you think getting universal healthcare is nearly impossible, well, that's nothing compared to repealing DSHEA.

It was horribly irresponsible for Dr. Oz to spout these claims about resveretrol in the first place. His claims about its possible benefits as a supplement are unsubstantiated, and such a product does not even exist. Thus, it is not surprising that shady supplement companies sprouted to fulfill the fraudulent market that HE created! I remain annoyed that Dr. Oz has been able to make a career out of reading Cliff Notes of the New York Times health section.

@djanes1: As much as I hate arguments from authority, Dr. Oz is not even a nutritionist or... even an internist. He's a surgeon. A damn good one, mind you, but not really an expert on the subject.
Note: I am not arguing that surgeons cannot know about nutrition, or that surgeons cannot comment on internal medicine. They received much of the same training as internal med docs and are generally a highly qualified bunch. I just don't go to my ENT for skin issues, and I wouldn't want my GP to do a bypass surgery.

I don't care if he's secretly an android sent from the future or got his medical degree from Harvard or a ctraker jacbox--the real point is that there are no real studies supporting the bulk of his claims. It's the double-blind studies (or lack therof) that convince me, not qualifications.
That is absurd. There are thousands of in-vitro, in-vivo and human trials which have demonstrated the health effects of resveratrol dating back to the early 1990s. Dr. Oz had nothing to do with creating this the scammers who deceived buyers by illegally using his likeness and video excerpts. Try a search on scholar.google.com for resveratrol, transmax and cancer, or diabetes, or cardio-vascular disease. You will see that institutions such as Harvard, Albert Einstein Med Ctr. and many others have published studies in journals such as Nature, Cell and hundreds of others confirming resveratrol's effects. There are legitimate resveratrol products available. Check the ConsumerLab evaluations if you want a respected independent assessment.

This is great news for legitimate resveratrol providers and supplement buyers. If one is interested in knowing which product Dr. Oz actually did use in his segment on Oprah all one needs to do is go to the Oprah site and search for resveratrol. A Google search will only return the scammers such as the ones Oprah and Dr. Oz are taking legal action against, It is a shame that Google, a company with the motto \"do no evil\", aids and abets crooks such as the ones mentioned in this article, who are finally being prosecuted. Google is evidently only concerned about its bottom line, not its users or advertisers or consumers who trust Google to do at least the basic vetting of its advertisers. Search engines clearly put dollars ahead of ethics when it comes to such conflicts of interest. Consumer Lab evaluated the leading resveratrol brands about 18 months ago and recently updated their ratings. You can see on their site the products that rated highest were biotivia transmax and bioforte. None of the companies being sued by Oprah allowed their products to be evaluated.

@bikeoid: I seem to remember reading that it only takes 5 unaddressed complaints within a 30-day period to attain an \"F\" from the BBB. And also, if you have a paid membership ($350 yearly-renewal) to the BBB that you let laps, your grade is also dropped.
I believe that because BBB is a for-profit, non-government agency, is why you almost never read Consumerist.com recommending them, or even mention them as a solution.

This looks a lot like one scammer suing a battalion of scammers. Look , if you're stupid enough to believe that you can take a pill and reverse aging ,then you are plenty stupid enough to fall for the old hidden terms and conditions hustle that these guys pull. In fact ,I'm sure that their business plan is counting on that very fact.
That said , I agree with Djanes up above when he/she says that it's irresponsible to make these wild ass claims about this gunk. Not to mention cruel. Holding out this stuff as a magic bullet was just the spark that some of these parasites needed to scam the hell out of trusting (but stupid) people with credit cards and then run 'fer the hills when demand drops or the feds get wise.
Most of the stuff coming out of Dr. Oz's mouth sounds just like the claims from the infomercials...

I was caught by such an ad but they did cancel it when I called and wrote. I did both to be sure. I then found a legit supplier that was reasonable 3 month supply of higher dose for 50.
Resveratrol is a gamble but Dr. Oz didn't make it up. There are a number of non-human scientific studies that show very positive results and some human studies are going on now. If people want to take the risk on such a supplement they should be allowed to.

While there have been some actual studies done on resveratrol that have shown it to have the effects claimed, the amount of resveratrol you'd have to take on a daily basis is a couple orders of magnitude higher than any of these pills have in them, and even then you'd have to be taking it intravenously, not orally, and you'd have to do this every day for MONTHS to have the effects.
Whatever happened to people being happy just the way they are?
If they would just use a little restraint and common sense (cents) they could save themselves a lot of dough, grief and years of psychotherapy.
There would then be no need for products such as Resveratrol or Vioxx for that matter.

Did it ever occur to you that these claims aren't followed by the people that religiously follow Dr. Oz/Oprah/Dr. Phil/CNN? Because those individuals already know that these products weren't endorsed by their \"idols.\"
They're trying to sucker the people that rarely, if ever, watch those shows, but are aware of them enough to think, \"well, you know that they'll protect their names hardcore, so they wouldn't be allowing a product to use their name if it didn't have some benefit...\"
