If you've been out of work for months, and still don't have any leads on your next job, you've got a lot of company. According to the latest government job report, the average job search now takes over six months, the longest average since the government started tracking unemployment in 1948.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate is now at 9.8%, and there are over 5.4 million people who've been unemployed for more than 27 weeks. Even though layoffs have tapered off from their peak — 253,000 people lost their jobs in September, vs. over 600,000 per month earlier in the year — there hasn't been a whole lot of new hiring.

I hope that all of you get work really soon. BTW, I was laid off in 2003 for six months from the automotive sector. I found work with the federal government. We're losing boomer's at an alarming rate of retirement and we're hiring also. "http://www.cpol.army.mil/" is where you would create a resume for DOD/Army jobs. "USAJobs.com" is similar to Monster.com for job searches, but the site that I like best is "http://www.federaljobsearch.com/". At this site, this is how I found my current position. You can search each state individually for specific jobs. You can also receive job postings for free in e-mails, however, you will have to pay a fee to access the details of the job, contact numbers, etc.

Oddly, I'm glad to be laid off. I redid my budget, figuring unemployment puts me in a lower federal tax bracket, no payroll tax (Social Security/Medicare), no state/local taxes now, and the savings on gas/tolls/insurance (I drive 120 miles per day after the company relocated offices), it's a relief to be laid off... Because if you quit, unemployment doesn't pay. The company relocation added $4700 pre-tax to yearly commuting expenses which was unsustainable on top of $3600 pay cuts. I'm not slacking, I've missed 2 days in 10 years, but will be able to meet family for all the winter holidays this year. However looking for a new job will be a challenge, I have 4 unemployed friends and it's rough.

We did $5 gifts for everyone last year, except for one person who you could get a "full gift" for, and it worked out very well and since everyone played by the same rules, was a financial/mental relief for all.

I didn't get laid off, I got *fired* as a manager from Best Buy for trying to do the right thing for an employee. Apparently, that caused a "disruption in the work place". So, next time you find your local BBY just doesn't give a shit, it won't be me. I feel bad for all our customers who will find zero compassion and common sense now. On the other hand, the rash on the back of my neck is gone and my face has completely cleared up in three days of not working at that wretched store. I love the company, absolutely hated working for a dumb kid who "retired from college" because he thought he had nothing to learn.

Here are real figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The effective unemployment rate for me (Oregon) is 18.4%. It really sucks for us -- but at least we're doing better than Michigan!

In RHode Island where we live, there are long waiting lists even for the burger-slinging, grocery cashier, and other minimum wage, low skilled jobs. Home Depot cut back on its sales staff, same with Lowes. Even jobs like bus boy and dishwasher in restaurants are very hard to come by. So, it's not always snobbery that keeps people from working such jobs. My husband (with his PhD and great resume) would gladly have worked at Home Depot, but they weren't even taking apps. Scary.

My husband took a job after 2 years of unemployment -- in another state. I see him every couple of weeks for a weekend. :-( But it's a job. Oldest son, 23, moved halfway across the country after trying for several years to find fulltime work here. All he was getting was a patchwork of parttime jobs in his field. That makes two members of our little family who have moved away... only me and one kid left at home. I won't leave my (good) job with (good) benefits, so I can't join my husband in his new location. It's a strange saga.

I stopped by one day to pick up a fan and they had a 2 week wait from drop off to repair. I think I may attack that one next.

I have seen a few ads around town about places looking for part time computer repair help (small shops) but depending on the travel and time, it might not be worth it, or I would break even with just fuel costs.

@xtc46 - thinksmarter on twitter: Some people can't go to "sling burgers". Minimum wage pays $320 a week, and thats on full time. People who had good jobs bought things on credit, which is for better or worse, how things work in this country. Things like homes to live in, and cars to drive to work, and educations to get them the good jobs. Those people might have bought a modest home and a modest car, well within their budget back when they had their good job, but now they have lost their job due to the economic situation, and $320 a week is not going to pay for those agreements they made when they had their heads above water. They have no choice but to look for a job that pays in a similar fashion to what they were doing before. It would require them to go bankrupt before they could legally abandon the repayment structure they agreed upon before being laid off, at which point they could get a burger joint job where they would not get heath care for themselves or their family.

Do you really want a nation of people going bankrupt?

Even during the best of times it can take months to find a job with all of the bullshit games that companies and their HR departments play. Job searches that are not really searches , advertising positions that they "hope" will be funded ,multiple interviews with people that have no power to pull the trigger... It's not hard to see why people are frustrated and confused.

I have seen companies bring in applicants just to scare their current staff . My wife is a chemical engineer. She was once called to an interview for a chemical plant that was shut down and ordered closed.(she demurred) Lots of HR drones conduct searches just to look busy. Then the same companies can't understand why their retention of employees is a problem.

I am one of the voices you hear on the phone and talk to when you call customer service, only I am probably the friendliest ones you will find and on your side as a fellow consumerist reader. :) But...with all the outsourcing to third world countries, it is harder to land work in my field.

Off to back up plan of business ownership or school. Neither of which are friendly to unemployment benefits.

Except, at most such places, they already aren't keeping people for more than a couple months. It's not like a PhD is going to be any worse about that than a high school kid or an ex con.

The real unemployment rate is closer 17% if you take into account those who gave up or work part time because they couldn't find anything. That kind of tells you the problem. It must mean that 1/3 or more of households are effected. Meaning money not being spent, and businesses not able to hire.

@swilk: Really? I thought the problem lied within the oxymoron of job hiring: "only hiring experience." How does one get a job when they have no experience then? And THEREIN lies the real problem. I'm 20. I have virtually no job experience. I'm still working on a degree. All those "teen" jobs or starter positions? They're being taken up by people who lost their jobs--people with extensive work experience and people with degrees. Heck, this is Florida too, so when some retired fogey feels bored, he applies at the local McDonald's as well, despite that he doesn't need the paycheck.

Doesn't mean I don't go into places where they aren't hiring and drop applications. That's mainly what my job consists of every day; dropping off applications where they aren't hiring. If someone is hiring, the only thing I qualify for is some starter position with no previous experience necessary. Just my luck that everyone ELSE also qualifies for that job too. I once went to a job fair, came ten minutes into it after it started and the table that was advertising a starter position didn't have any applications left. They said they came with 200 applications.

Whoohoo 12% Florida unemployment. Yeah, some people are trying to just keep their lives going--I can't even start mine.

Yeah, this is where I'm at right now. I went back to school to start a new career, and now everyone in the program is out looking for internships/jobs. The program had a 90% full-time hire rate for it's graduates, but this year the program has twice as many people in it, while the companies hiring out of it have slashed their hiring quota since they've all been laying people off!

Kind of wish I had stayed in my old job so that I wouldn't be graduating into a recession. Even if I do somehow land a job, my starting pay will be far worse, so even after the recession it'll take a long time to catch up to where I should be after graduating.

Luckily, I have a crappy retail job that pays the rent and I can do freelance design jobs while I look for a "real job.", but everyone else I graduated with is having the same problem. It sucks.

Luckily, he can substitute teach, but with the educational sector over here shrinking like there's no tomorrow things aren't looking up for him for next year. I'm tempted to go back to school for 4 years just to wait out this mess. Only issue is if I do go back to school, I'm going to have to compete with everyone else that thought it was a good idea to go back to school. You can't really win either way.
