While leaning out her dorm window to watch some riots — hell, what else is there to do in Pittsburgh? — Bob's daughter's iPod decided it'd had enough of this world and took a swan dive into oblivion.

But sure enough, when she scurried down to the pavement to retrieve the device, it was still playing that newfangled rock-and-roll music the kids are listening to these days. Bob writes:

Had to share this story with you: my daughter attends the University of Pittsburgh and lives on a 9th floor dorm. During the recent G-20 riots in Pittsburgh, she was looking out the window to see what was going on. She accidently dropped her iPod Classic out the open window and it fell 9 floors, landing on the asphalt below. Fearing the worse, she immediately went downstairs and was amazed that — even though the corner of the device was dented — the unit turned on and has worked flawlessly ever since!

Thanks Apple!

It's a stunning story because electronic devices rarely survive the fall from my hip pocket to the floor, let alone from a high-rise into a demonstration.

But even more amazing than the whole iPod-surviving-the-plunge aspect of Bob's daughter's iPod was that it was a rare call from a college student to a parent in which the topic was NOT "Send me more money."

I tried to encourage the salesman to take it apart himself or put some sort of sticker that read INTERESTING PLEASE SET ASIDE on it, but he just put it with the other recycleables.

Some Microsoft fanboys demanded to know why Apple didn't give me a new one on warranty.

No, seriously. There aren't many places (citikid, me) I'd leave an iPod around and not expect it to evaporate.
The one place someone does, in the middle of an anonymous, milling crowd where it's not stolen in a San Francisco second is with "anarchist" protesters trying to peaceably speak to power to the G20.
Accidently, the OP discovered something that speaks volumes about these groups' ethics.
Name any other group, political or not, that you'd expect this. I'm drawing a blank. You?

My iPod survived falling from the jetway of a United 737 onto the tarmac below (through that small crack between the door of the plane and the jetway).

I didn't realize it had fallen until I was about to exit the jetway into the terminal, and went back to look. Figured out quickly with the help of a flight attendant that it must have fallen through. The captain was exiting the cockpit as we were looking below to see it, and he had the flight attendant call ground services to see if they could find it. They did, and within 10 minutes had brought it up for me. And it worked!

I wrote United a letter after that to thank the Captain, the flight attendant, and the ground crew-person for taking the extra time to help me out. I feel complaint letters are more effective if positive behavior is also highlighted.

For future reference, if anything happens to your new iPod, always bring the broken iPod back to Apple to check if it is still under warranty. You would need to tell them that it just stopped working and NOT that it was your fault because they will only replace defective devices. If you find out you are not covered under the warranty, you can trade in the broken iPod (to recycle) and they will give you 10% off a new iPod.

This was my submission. No, the iPod was not in a case. It landed on the bottom corner and left a nice dent. She saw it fall and it landed on the sidewalk. Two students were down there and she yelled for them to grab it. They came up and gave it back to her. For those concerned about HER falling out the window, even though there is no screen in the window, the window is too small for a college student to go through. As for "storey" versus "story" I vote for the latter. As for "protest" versus "riot" call it what you will - but I'd still rather be on the 9th floor watching...

In this instance both parties were wrong: the protesters and the police. The police however abused their power.

Last year, my iPod Nano (2nd generation) got caught to my gym clothes and managed to survive being put in the washing machine AND dryer. Although it had a protective "skin" when it went into the wash, it easily slipped off and therefore cannot take any credit for saving my iPod. I let it air dry for a few days before charging it back up again. It was good as new and clean! haha

@Rachacha: I was there. The article doesn't say if this was Thursday or Friday night, but I'm going to assume Friday.
About 400 students and other demonstrators gathered peacefully in Schenley Park, which is in Oakland. Not knowing which dorm the girl was in, it's hard to say whether she was in any danger. It wasn't so much a riot until the police started to randomly arrest, teargas and attack both protesters and bystanders indiscriminately.
Lots of students were watching from the safety of their dorm balconies (because, hey, it's something to do other than a Steelers game).
The police surrounded the group and ordered them to disperse, forcing them into another park where other cops were waiting to arrest them. This girl could have been caught up in a "wrong place wrong time" situation, but luckily for her she wasn't.

It had to have been in a case. I could see an iPod Touch maybe, maybe surviving this due to the flash drive...but the fact that the hard drive still spins is kind of incredible.

Also, Phil, that last line makes no sense, as there is no iPhone in this story.

I've dropped my iPhone 3g more times than I care to admit. It has it's share of scratches and a couple cracks near the USB port. However, I've never had any problems with the device.

My sister had her first-gen iPhone chewed on by her Pit Bull puppy and (with the exception of a cracked screen and broken volume and silence buttons) it works just fine.

My experience with Apple products is that they will take quite a beating and still function, even if there is some superficial damage (broken buttons and cracked cases/screens).

Sure, you could argue that a cracked screen or a broken button IS a sort of failure, but most of the time there are workarounds through software. Plus, the buttons broken on her iPhone can be fixed with a few hours, a steady hand, a $25 replacement part, and a total disregard for whatever warranty she might have left. :-)
