It's true that it is fake...McDonalds would never send a letter like that around. They would send an email, and I am pretty sure my local McDonalds follows that policy because about 1 in 4 times I go there, I am missing my fries. I've learned to check now though.

@Saboth: IMHO They would make a call using code words. They would not send anything that actually stated what they were going to do.

Robert Trugabe did in fact sound like a fake name, but now that I know McDonald's Australia employs someone named Bronwyn Stubbs, it seems slightly more believable.

@gStein: I'd buy that save for, you know, the signature. I don't think even for plausible deniability the company would circulate a letter signed the contemporary equivalent of \"Adolf Smitler.\"

...but if employees can save money, they are encouraged to do so.

hopefully we won't be seeing too many stories with the new \"NOT REAL\" tag.

Perhaps the problem is that these highest standards are being lost in communication... erm I mean translation. No literally, I rarely see a McDonnalds around the DC area where even the manager can speak enough english to receive a complaint properly. And sadly no I am not overexagerating.

@behrens: Well apparently people who watch the news are rare. I got called \"a huge brained genius who knows all the world's politicians\" just for being able to identify Robert Mugabe.
@MostlyHarmless: My 12 year-old son knows who Robert Mugabe is. Mostly because that's what I call him when he's acting like a little tyrant...

@behrens: Good point, and once I looked at the name closely I realized the fake, but at first glance I missed it-the signature was not my focus.

Well it may be fake, but if this is not a typical practice then why have I never EVER left a fast food place to discover that there was an extra burger or apple pie? Perhaps one in 10 times I am missing something I paid for. However if it were truly random happenstance there would be as many positive errors as negatives.

As the above comment indicates, this is where not researching before posting leaves Consumerist wide open to libel suits. Despite McDonald's (and Consumerist) reporting it as fake...there will be people who still believe it is real and McD's is only covering face...
Hopefully this blows over...because I would think McD's legal team is a little more competent than Cash4Gold's (look at how - despite losing the lawsuit - they turned public perception in the hot coffee incident)...
I got that on Robert \"Trugabe\".
Though I was slightly disappointed, and mostly depressed at the number of commenters who thought this was real.
@MostlyHarmless: Well, at least some folks like, er, me might not have actually *read* the signature. It didn't really concern me what the guy's name was.
So I only just now saw that part.

And by the people who continued to think it was real after the big \"Parody\" tag was smacked on it.

I could swear to you that the KFC near me has this tactic on purpose. I've tried to order food there (inside, with Mr. Aroo) about 3 times.. and every single time they leave something out. Usually MY stuff.
The last time we went there was the LAST time. He ordered a meal and I ordered a popcorn chicken snack box. Then we got home and it WASN'T THERE. He accepted the food while I was getting the drinks, and I assumed that he checked it. I told Mr. Aroo not to even go there anymore on his own because I don't want to give those idiots any more of our money.
@MostlyHarmless: You can't blame posters for thinking that something like that was fact-checked or investigated prior to publication.
@MostlyHarmless: And what exactly would be the tip off that it was fake? The fact that it was signed by the Australian president (or prime minister or whatever they have). Hell, most Americans cant tell you who their own elected officials are, let alone one 3,000 miles away.
