In its latest effort to take the burger experience to a higher level — and win back consumers who've migrated to "fast casual" restaurants — Burger King is remodeling more of its eateries to include what His Highness describes as a "contemporary industrial palette of metallic and black accents, complemented by finishes that resemble brick and concrete." But will the fancy new look, which was relaunched this week in Amsterdam, get customers to eat more Whoppers? And how does a creepy guy in a plastic mask sell what the company calls an "intimate and engaging dining" experience?

Inside: Poll - Will the new look get you to eat at BK more often?

The concept, dubbed "20/20," is already in place at about 60 BK outlets, but the chain now plans to take it global. According to CEO John Chidsey:

As we continue to grow and strengthen the brand worldwide, this new restaurant design exemplifies our vision for the brand's future and reinforces our goal of delivering superior products and positive guest experiences. ... [T]he 20/20 design takes this distinction a step further by creating an exceptional and memorable dining environment that builds on our signature assets.

The new look comes as consumers have begun trading up from traditional fast food outlets to "fast casual" chains like Panera. Sales at fast casual restaurants were up 63% least year, according to industry estimates.

Renovations will cost franchisees as much as $600,000 per restaurant, with no guarantee that the metallic accents and faux concrete will bring in new customers. "I don't think they'll change their perception," Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy told the AP. "They're pretty entrenched in their reality."

Perhaps they jack up the menu prices because of all the coupons?

While we should aim for as close to complete safety as possible, and it's a problem that there's been an uptick in these problems, even if you eat only ground up paste like in The Matrix, you'll always chance getting sick when you eat.

I'd be interested in seeing comparative stats on types of foods and what gets people sick the most often. Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest to me that leafy greens end up being the biggest culprit the most often.

My wife and I hadn't had them in years and there was one location next to our apartments, at the time, that continuously shut down and reopened (like 4 times in 2 years). So, we decided to give them a shot. The first time wasn't too bad, but after the second time, we decided to never go there again. We broke down and hit another BK on the other side of town while out and about and once again, our faith in the King was killed. BK is trash... hopefully they'll just slide into obscurity, but I'm sure they'll be around for forever.

Personally, I can't believe K-Mart is surviving. I was not surprised that they were bankrupt a few years ago, then I was amazingly surprised when they came out of it and bought Sears, Roebuck & Company!

Sears actually was one of the department stores I was talking about before that used to move stuff around every couple years. Since K-Mart bought them, their stores have been static and less inviting.

I predict that K-Mart and Sears will be gone within 5 years.

I'm pretty evenly split between BK and Wendy's, as are my friends. The McDonald's we tend to go to only occasionally (read: for a change of pace) was remodeled about 5 years ago, and while it's nice, it's not going to keep us coming back.

Personally I don't have any qualms with BK save that their fries could be better, but I love their burgers over Wendy's and McD's any day (Wendy's has the best chicken, McD's the best fries IMO).

Overall, should either of the BK's within a mile of me decide to remodel, at most they'll inconvenience me when I'm gunning for a double stack or thick griller while they're remodeling, and at the least I may feel a bit more relaxed/comfortable eating in their restaurants after they remodel.

The one thing I hate most about BK's current digs are their booths.

Every time I go to the one by my office, there is a wait - anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes - for spicy. Sometimes they tell you about the wait in advance, so you can decide if you have enough time, and other times they just make you stand there and wait, running late to whatever you had to do next. So my advice to Popeyes would be: "Make the chicken *before* lunch rush hits. And communicate better with your customers."

That and the smell of exploded ketchup packets. The vinegar from them begins to smell after a while if you can't get to it to clean it up.
Unless I'm craving fast food, I won't go near one... unless it's Chick-Fil-A - the smell isn't as overpowering and my husband loves their sandwiches. It feels fresher in a C-F-A than other places. Shrugs. Maybe it is perception.

I went to a Hardee's about a year ago and was surprised at how modern and "hip" it looked. Most Hardee's I had seen years previous, looked sad and dated. Food was still mediocre, they they did have some interesting new options.

@zacox: I hate it when grocery stores change their aisles. I can understand if they do this to make room for more stuff, but when I walk into a Cheap-Food Store (or a grocery store chain I didn't just make up) - I want to be able to find what I'm looking for. If I want interesting and new, I wander over to the meat or bakery counters. Changing the aisles around is just frustrating. After our last move, I thought I'd never drink Tang again because I couldn't find it at any of the three grocery stores in the area - and I finally found it this month, hiding up on the top shelf in a weird category. And this even after I asked employees.

The BKs near me were remodeled within the past few years, but unfortunately, they were not well maintained and are already due for a renovation again. COntrast that with a McDonalds near me that was redecorated to include attractive etched glass, cherry wood trim and fresh cut flowers on every table. No signs of Ronald or the Fry Guys. Combine that with free WiFi, and it would be a very comfortable place for a business traveler to catch up on some E-mails and relax before getting on the road again, or a salesman to kill some time between customer appointments (where presumably they will purchase some food and beverage).

Restaurants like Panera or Cosi are a bit more expensive than McD and BK, but they offer a different menue with more variety (At BK and McD you can choose between processed fish, processed chicken, or 15 types of burgers, while at Panera and Cosi you can choose hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, wraps, salads, pizzas with a variety of different ingredients). Panera and Cosi also tend to have a bit more of a relaxed feel to them where people can sit and unwind, chat with friends or do some work away from the office.

All the good retailers and restaurants change up their look every so often. Some department stores completely move everything in the store every five years just to create new looks. Refreshing logos, graphics, facades and other looks really is a good way to keep a brand interesting. But, it won't make a good brand great, and it definitely won't make a bad brand palatable.
