I'm a pro-gun conservative and all. But, GOOD GRIEF!!! It's people like this that I wouldn't trust with a spit-ball thrower, let alone a gun.
So how do we keep guns out of the hands of nutcases like this one? Or is it worth it to you to retain your right to bear arms knowing that the creeps have that same right? (I don't mean this to sound accusatory; I'm genuinely interested in the problem.)

@ElizabethD: I'll answer for myself. Yes, absolutely it is worth retaining the right to keep and bear arms despite these cases. This nutjob could have just as easily thrown a rock through the window of the store and walked in, picked up a fork, and assaulted the staff with it. You cannot mandate peace, respect, and human decency through law. Removing weapons from law abiding citizens will never prevent these situations because a weapon is not necessary to cause harm to someone else.
Bad argument. Weapons like guns are often used on impulse. A handgun in a pocket gets fired a lot quicker than my 12 gauge locked in its case in the trunk of my car. If you attacked me a fork or a stone I could at least defend myself. Not much I can do with a gun.@lordmorgul:

@ElizabethD: Unfortunately, having guns is like having kids. Sure, things would be swell if they let me decide who can and can't have them, but I don't want anyone to have the power to decide whether or not I can!
I do think you should be required to have a license in order to operate a firearm though, much like you have to have one to operate a car. They're both items that, if used unsafely, can have disastrous consequences for your fellow citizens.
Interesting. I've long made the point that gun safety should be a requirement of every kid in the United States including the inner cities. If we're going to let people buy them we might as well train them how to use them safely. @JennQPublic:

What you have just proposed is excellent! Make the schools teach our kids how to use guns safely and appropriately. We already teach them about sex; why not teach them about gun safety? Plus, education itself would not infringe anybody's right to keep and bear arms. Kudos to you!

To be honest with you, ElizabethD, I'm not sure what the best solution would be. On the one hand, having a mandatory psychological evaluation test would (hopefully) weed out some of these nutcases. But, it would also add red tape for regular people trying to get guns.
But, of course, nutcases like this will just get guns illegitimately (through the black market or theft), if it's made illegal for them to get guns.

That's a very reasonable answer.
Besides guns, any nutcase could get other, legally and easily purchased weapons like chainsaws, crowbars, knives, etc. If they're really as crazy as this stupid fuck, then I wouldn't put it past them to be carrying ninja stars around for gods sake. This guy is just criminally insane and that's about it.

@floraposte: She sounds like someone who works the night shift at a Taco Bell. After doing night shift in fastfood I started talking to everyone in mom voice. It works incredibly well at getting drunk men to behave themselves. I've stopped people from throwing food, stealing napkin dispensers, and climbing on tables by counting to three in a stern voice.
Sometimes it failed me, but never so badly that I was shot in the leg.

wow. worst i ever got was half full beer bottles thrown out a car window at the drive through window. we closed at 2, so did the bars - every weekend some ass would come through the drive through at 2:15 and see me in there mopping the floor and closing down and get crazy over the fact that he couldn't get any food.
the bottles bounced but usually some of the beer made it in the gap where the halves of the window met. more to mop....

If I was the judge and that bastard is caught and brought to me for trial. First thing, to see how competent was he and if he was, minimum 5 to 10 years with no parole and no exceptions. This is stupidity at its best. Just for that, and for lack of self control and understanding harsher prison sentences and not only to him. Kill an animal for fun either in a forest, park, or a pet, 5 years jail. Laws needs to be harsher these days to set an example. And of course have to be backed up with good reasons.

Can consumerist investigate the TacoBell receipt survey?
I've looked into it and Yum! always say you can win, but what I can't figure out is how. Especially since when you fill the survey out online you don't ever provide any contact information.
Trust me, the survey is legit. I am a Taco Bell manager, and there have been three winners recently just from my area. I often feel like a broken record telling people to call the number or go online, but it's worth it. Not only do you, the customer get a chance at a thousand, it also helps the restaurant out to know where we need to improve and where we're doing well. =)

Wow, even *I* don't get that angry when Wendy's is out of Frostys or baked potatoes. With my luck, about half the time I order one or the other, they are out.
As a fellow Taco Bell employee (I'm a shift leader), I'm appalled that someone would do something like this, but unfortunately I can't say that I'm really surprised. My own store went through 2 robberies in 2 weeks in December. I was there for one of them. I feel sorry for the girl in this story because I know how difficult it will be for her to return to work. The person who did this to her deserves the harshest sentence they can give him. There is simply no excuse for what he did. This young lady had never done anything to him, yet he did something that will probably affect her for the rest of her life. People like that are just so disgusting to me. Someone else commented that he was probably drunk. I'm sorry but that isn't an excuse. If that's how he acts when he drinks, HE SHOULDN'T BE DRINKING!!! Thank you for letting me put my two cents in!

@hypnotik_jello: well, they don't specify how much of the bullet is left. If just a few fragments are lodged in the center of the calf muscle, it would be more dangerous to try and recover it, rather than leave it in place, whereupon the body will coat it, and develop scar tissue around it.
