Between Bit Torrent for any full length films I may want, free picture/video post sites and your old sister site from Gawker, fleshbot.com, I'm more then set. If you add in google image search, I don't really understand how anybody could pay for porn now a days.

Recent multitiered releases of albums in the past year have shown us that record companies are unnecessary. The artists can market themselves and still make money. Same with porn, as small, online-only studios are still raking in cash. Most of the amateur content is posted voluntarily and is fine, but a lot of the stuff is from professional DVDs and paid-membership websites. I can't imagine the people who own the rights to it are glad it's up on these sites for free.

In my hometown they used to be the world's largest maker of coated publishing paper (glossy paper) used in magazines. With the collapse of printed porn, one of the largest users of the paper, the company has struggled and laid off workers, and cut capacity. This is a reult most people never anticipated of the internet. Fewer dirty magazine meant fewer high paying manufacturing jobs in my small home town. So it's not just the actors, but the ancillary industries and workers too.

@diasdiem: Ha! I just got laid off from an adult Netflix-type company (gettin' a kick outta this, blah-blah).

Everyone I spoke to about the company would typically reply, \"There's a Netflix for PORN!?!?\". I think it says a lot about the marketing strategy (or lack of one) that these companies rely on. There may be plenty of free porn out there, but the rentals work well for a lot of people:

1. Couples
2. People who want to watch HD/Blu-ray porn on their 60in plasma/LCD TV with surround sound and whatnot
3. People who don't want to deal with virus/spam/scam issues on free sites
4. People with very basic computing needs/wants who are unwilling to upgrade just to watch some porn

Oh, and the incoming (heh) mail is opened with gloves on and an ammonia-based cleaner(like old school Windex) is always at the ready. Usually the movies come back pretty clean. It's just common decency/courtesy.

Gone are the days of people hiding it in the drawer and being embarrased about buying it. They cannot expect to charge 45-50 per DVD for their top performers because people are not going to pay for it anymore. Yes, for the fetish films they can do that because it is a niche market but overall with the amount that is available for free or low monthly payments no one is going to spend what they are charging.

Problem though is that once they lower it, they will never make the same profits that they used to. So like hotels, sports teams, etc... they resist lowering prices because they will never be able to raise them again so less money in their pockets.

That's why the porn industry has, over the years, self-regulated to require that all actors be tested, frequently.


The porn industry is pretty safe. Perhaps you'd do better to look at reclamation, logging, and other industries which do a piss-poor job of protecting workers.

@RvLeshrac: Actually, while HIV hasn't spread terribly throughout the porn world, I think you can do minimal research and find that most working porn actors have herpes. And most gay porn actors have gornorreah and/or syphillis.

Herpes is pretty prevelant in the US. 20-25% of American's have genital herpes, with oral herpes rates upwards of 80%.
