The real pain is being felt by the actors, and not just by those who specialize in scenes involving leather, latex or gardening tools:
For the 1,200 active performers in the Valley this means less action and more hardship. A young woman without [Nina] Hartley's name-recognition might have charged $1,000 for a straight scene before the crisis, but gets $800 or less now. Men are worse hit. If they averaged $500 for a straight scene in 2007, they are now lucky to get $300.
In addition to the recession, the industry is fighting an even greater evil: free and cheap porn on the internet. Porn, says actress Nina Hartley, is now "like potato chips, everywhere and cheap, to be consumed and tossed." Um, ah, oh, never mind.

Recent multitiered releases of albums in the past year have shown us that record companies are unnecessary. The artists can market themselves and still make money. Same with porn, as small, online-only studios are still raking in cash. Bangbros, for example, is raking in money and they have only recently started putting out DVD's of content found exclusively online.

]]>Everyone I spoke to about the company would typically reply, "There's a Netflix for PORN!?!?". I think it says a lot about the marketing strategy (or lack of one) that these companies rely on. There may be plenty of free porn out there, but the rentals work well for a lot of people:
1. Couples
2. People who want to watch HD/Blu-ray porn on their 60in plasma/LCD TV with surround sound and whatnot
3. People who don't want to deal with virus/spam/scam issues on free sites
4. People with very basic computing needs/wants who are unwilling to upgrade just to watch some porn
Oh, and the incoming (heh) mail is opened with gloves on and an ammonia-based cleaner(like old school Windex) is always at the ready. Usually the movies come back pretty clean. It's just common decency/courtesy.

Most of the amateur content is posted voluntarily and is fine, but a lot of the stuff is from professional DVDs and paid-membership websites. I can't imagine the people who own the rights to it are glad it's up on these sites for free.

Bittorrenting professional videos is illegal. Most of the "free" sites contain unauthorized uploads.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but just because you can get something for free doesn't mean it *is* free. Porn is getting killed by internet piracy just like the music is, only difference is they don't have a huge overreaching corporate lawyer brigade to make a big stink about it.

]]>In my hometown they used to be the world's largest maker of coated publishing paper (glossy paper) used in magazines. With the collapse of printed porn, one of the largest users of the paper, the company has struggled and laid off workers, and cut capacity. This is a reult most people never anticipated of the internet. Fewer dirty magazine meant fewer high paying manufacturing jobs in my small home town. So it's not just the actors, but the ancillary industries and workers too.
