@Bellor: Considering what Walmart has done in the past, I have no doubt that the Walmart employees involved will be fired. I also have no doubt that the customers who helped will be banned from the store for life.
Based on what I've read on The Consumerist, it seems that Walmart's corporate policy is to severely punish anyone doing what is honorable.

@Bellor: near 100% I'd say. A security guard that actually stops people is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Those guys are there to deter people just like fake surveillance cameras.

@Geekybiker: Could depend on circumstances. As long as the criminal basically attacked first, they might have a hard time terminating with cause, and it would probably look bad for them to fire someone over self defense. If the guard was the one who initiated the brawl, then they can claim he was endangering employees and customers.

@Bellor: I'd say very low assuming their job description is actually being a security guard and not just a receipt checker.
It'd be kind hard to enforce anything if all you can do is just stand there and smile while people run out the door with merch.

I doubt it. He really didn't pay for it and so long as they were just blocking his path, he threw the first punch, and they tried to get out of the situation, they'll be OK.

@jayphat: You're assuming their employer is reasonable enough to recognize that self-defense should not get you fired.
In the last 'employee chases down a perp' type story someone in the comments related a personal experience where they and a second employee did get fired for fighting even though the customer and his son attacked them first.

Not me. (I'll evaluate the situation, and it may come to that. But, that certainly won't be my first reaction.)

@I_have_something_to_say: You misunderstand, Mr. Angrypants. I'm tired of criminal dirtbags getting away with it. And, I think the world is a better place when Joe Citizen exercises a little vigilance. Walmart's shrinkage is low on the list of my concerns (although it raises prices.) I really don't care what store it's at -- I like to see the thief taken down. It's not like he was trying to feed his family with that firesafe, anyway.

@jokono: I'll be taking photos from a tree stand I make from shoe boxes. Then I'll be emailing them to whoever is working Consumerist at the time.
It kind of sounds like it all started as a standard receipt check that went ugly when it turns out the guy was armed. Well, that, and he didn't have a receipt.

I have nothing bad to say about Walmart security guards capturing an armed assailant. Thats how it should be. Good job.

I think people are tired of getting walked on and having the indecent people in society calling the shots...this is a case of people being fed up and doing something about it.

Uh, I consider the receipt checkers at Wal-Mart to be indecent and I'm fed up. Can I beat one up the next time I get harassed?
@mrsultana: I'm gonna say no you shouldn't beat up the receipt checker.. but you could stop shopping at that store.
Pummel them with your sense of self importance. It's big enough to do the job apparently.
Put that energy into something that matters.

Funny, NONE of my local walmarts (out of 3) have receipt checkers. We have old people that hand you carts as you come in, but no one bothers you on the way out.

@Saboth: There are 2 walmarts near me 1 is in a higher crime small town and they allways check receipts if something is not in a bag. The other is in a low crime small town and they don't check near as many receipts. Go figure higher loss numbers more people getting checked.
Well, if you're trying to steal a safe, I doubt you have your hands free to wield a firearm. That was the only flaw in his plan. At least he learned from the Petco people, and left his duck at home. [www.google.com]

Did the security guards get fired for trying to apprehend a shoplifter? I thought that was a Walmart policy but maybe I'm thinking of someplace else.
@vladthepaler: No Walmart lets them follow the customer home and beat them to death because shoplifting is taken very seriously. :(

I have a problem with this. I refuse to show my receipt at the door. The law says my transaction is complete at the register and I am under no obligation to show my receipt at the door or let granny peak in bag.
They know they're not supposed to do things like that nor do they have the authority to detain anyone. If some Walmart rent-a-cop tackled me for doing what I do, I would probably proceed to knock his teeth in. I would at least call the police immediately and press charges.

@coren: Obviously if security was there talking to him and trying to stop him from leaving, they suspected him of stealing long before he didn't show his receipt.
@squinko: Or he refused to show a receipt and they intervened, or hell they had security posted at the exit already doing receipt checking.
@xkevin108x: Don't know the actual effects of the law but you're also choosing to buy an item from them in their store. They can refuse your business for any reason I believe (like if you don't want to show receipt). I know sams club also has it written into their policy in all that legalise wording

Refusing your business means not letting you back in the store not refusing to let you leave. It's kinda too late to refuse someone's business after the transaction.

Is it just me, or has anyone else NEVER seen a security guard at a Walmart? Maybe we're just more civil here in Iowa.

@osiris73: You're not supposed to see them. Most of the inventory control folks sit in back watching multiple cameras. They wear plain clothes. When they see you conceal an item and attempt to leave the store without paying they'll try to stop you. Sometimes with the help of uniformed security if they have them. At that point they'll call the police and level shoplifting charges.
Of course it's kind of hard to conceal a safe on your person, but maybe it was made by Acme or something...
@osiris73: I've seen real police officers in Kroger but I've never seen a security person in the Wal-mart in my city. I did see one at a Wal-mart in my hometown though so I guess it just varies by location.
@osiris73: Duh. Wal Mart buys stuff from China. So they also buy their security people from there, and everyone knows Ninjas come from China. So that's why you never see them.

Anyone for betting that he thought the Sentry Safe already had money in it?
Or his criminal mastermind buddies told him to \"go rob the store safe where they keep all the money\" and this was the best he could do?
My guess is this was step one of his plan.
1. Steal safe.
2. Rob Bank.
3. Put money in safe.

YES they will get fired and YES they should get fired. Im tired of the \"outrage\" when a \"hero\" gets fired.
save the outrage for when youve ran your own business, and priced out how much it costs to insure your employees against active armed robber fighting.
Why even bother checking receipts or having security then? Just let people walk out with whatever they want.
Don't hire me to do a job then tell me I don't have the power to do anything. It's like having guys transporting millions of dollars then arming them with mace. I might get killed because you are placing me in danger with no tools (and yes, regulations are \"tools\").

Calling him an armed assailant paints a different picture than the actual story - he wasn't brandishing or displaying his weapon, it was concealed. From what I can tell, the gun (and knife!) were not visible and no one knew he had it til the gun fell out. At which point (since they knew nothing about the knife) they would think he was unarmed again. Good on them, still, but a very different situation than what one might otherwise assume.
Also, pellet gun.
What are security guards hired for if not for this?
Also, I don't much care for the condescending tone of the article. Because a job is supposedly low-paying, that means you aren't obligated to perform it to the best of your ability?
Kudos to these men for doing their job, and doing it well. I don't consider that \"alarming\" in the slightest.

You laugh at that, but thats a scene from when I worked fro Wal-Mart in 2006. Guy tries to steal a pre-paid phone, goes over and gets a hunting knife to cut the package open, and manages to stab himself in the artery in his wrist cutting it open. He bleeds ALL the way to the front of the store before passing out.
And yes, he still tried to pocket the phone.
Oh, he was Hep B positive too so he got charged with a felony for the almost 1K worth of merchandise we had to destroy because he bled on it.
