I love LogMeIn. :) I use it all the time with my Hackintosh & iMac. I also have that Uncercover program on my laptop, for added security.

@rachaeljean: i use RemotelyAnywhere, which is similar to a paid version of LogMeIN (and sold by the same company) but doesn't use LogMeIn's servers - i connect to my computer directly via IP Address. (gives me more control over the system, with no annual fee, and the added advantage of not sending my data through their servers)

@Mobius: How does he know they are stolen? Someone going around trying to sell them sure sounds suspicious. But does this mean if I want to sell my laptop, I shouldn't go to a barbershop and offer it to someone I don't know because they might think it is stolen? OK, someone will say to sell it on Craigslist. But lots of stuff is stolen there, too. Burglars can sell stuff there, and given that a barbershop isn't safe, maybe they will move to Craigslist. What is ultimately needed is a place/way to verify if it is stolen or not.
In the mean time, if I buy a used computer, I wipe it off ... and I don't mean with a rag.

I was amazed to read that he got the laptops back almost immediately after they were recovered. I was always under the impression that the police and DA would have held them as evidence until a trial was concluded.
@The-Lone-Gunman: All you need to do is take an image of the hard drive to preserve the data, or just take the hard drive and leave the user without it. It is not difficult to copy an entire drive, or replace the drive with a new one. Police could have easily done either.

What does Logmein do over the stuff built in to Windows? (Remote Desktop, Remote Assistance)

It's easier to setup and traverse the internet with. It gets through NATs and firewalls more easily than RDP in my experience.

@Xerloq wants to...: It might be similar to what my system uses. Mine runs a background SSH program that logs in a session on a restricted user on my server. It does port forwarding in reverse back to the computer it came from. So if it could reach my server, I can connect to a special port on my server and that gets me to the computer in question and everything goes through the connection that was made out to the net.
@nytmare: Remote Desktop locks out the user when you remote in. I guess Logmein lets you work simultaneously.
The same guy who stole and then tried to resell my concert instrument had the same mindset. He's now sitting in jail, by the way. Never steal a musician's gear.

I would think RDC would be pretty useless for tracking a stolen laptop, since you wouldn't know what IP the thief is at.

Once you remote in to a PC via LogMeIn, a window appears advising the user that someone has connected and is monitoring the PC...It can be closed, though.
So, either the guy didn't see the notification window, or he might have been...uhm...busy.

@xspook: Well, he needed the address to tell the police. I'm guessing the guy listed his cell number on the ads he placed, and the $10 site is probably a data miner, and he must have linked his cell number to an address somewhere when filing out a publicly available form.
@GitEmSteveDave_HasANewNameToday: @xspook: Whitepages.com offers a reverse lookup that could have probably given him at least the guys name, and possibly his direct address, or at least the one he listed when he signed up for the cell phone.

My husband's office was broken into in April. They stole his laptop and several printers. In July, I was at work when his AIM username came online. I started chatting with the person. She told me that her fiance had given her the laptop. I told her it was stolen and almost had her willing to meet me (I would have sent the police instead.) When I passed her cellphone info on to the police, they told me that, basically, it wasn't worth their time... great.
Well, if he was spying on the porn love while listening to music, he can expect a bill from the RIAA.
