Looks like Sony pulled the commercial. Now he says, \"Don't believe everything you read on the internet. That's how World War 2 started.\" Looks like Sony caved in on that front. But, obviously, the film will never be re-edited and/or removed from screens.

I went to summer camp with someone who lived in Nigeria. IIRC, his name was Babatunde. Some of the stories he told back then (late 80's) still kind of freak me out. And yes, some did involve cannibalism.

\"9\" was no different from calling it \"Dave\" if the creator of #'s 1-9 had decided to name his creations instead of number them. So it was still perfectly relevant and reasonable to name the movie as such.

It was just confusing having two movies with the same name (at least pronounced) and another one with the same numeral coming out around the same time (It's like when The Prince of Tides came out about the same time as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves). I heard them talking about \"Nine\" on the radio and was trying to figure out how they made the animated sci-fi pic into a musical.

What Nigeria seems to be missing is that the movie was written and directed by a man from South Africa - so perhaps their anger shouldn't be directed at Sony, but at the person who should - for all intents and purposes - know a good deal about Nigeria and Africa in general.

I've seen the movie and read a lot of discussions and critiques about it (and participated in some, which is about what a film MFA is good for), and actually, Blomkamp uses a lot of racial / cultural attitudes that currently exist, as well as the ones invented to deal with the aliens. The thoughts about that fall into two camps: either that Blomkamp is mindlessly parroting his local cultural attitudes, or that Blomkamp and the film are smart enough to be using existing attitudes to play off of each other and with the themes of the film. Personally, I run with the latter, because it was a very well-crafted movie.
That said, the portrayal of the Nigerians is indeed less than flattering and the film does give enough cause to worry about the racial angle. But the film wants you to be worried about that, was the impression I got, rather than just glossing over everything.

@Etoiles: That movie was shiite as \"craft\". Have you not seen any sci-fi from the last 30 years? It was entirely a derivative work with production values below the level of made-for-television. It would have gone straight to DVD and forgotten forever if not for Peter Jackson stamping his approval across its forehead.
Now, as a social commentary it's an entirely different animal. But still, it was like the History Channel and American public television had a surrogate child for HBO.
@settsu: I disagree; I thought it definitely accomplished what it set out to do, and that the technical tools etc. employed enhanced, rather than detracted from, the film's narrative and themes. I also think that the effects work, where present (which is in a startling percentage of the film) was very well done and conveyed exactly what it needed to without any extraneous, superfluous eye candy thrown in for the sake of CG artists' ego stroking.
But that's the nice thing about film criticism. We can each have our preferences.

I've seen District 9. It's a good movie, and by the end of it, you're rooting for the aliens. Yeah, there's a Nigerian that's not very nice. But he's just one person. The ugliness of humanity goes far beyond just that one person. And it's not portrayed as \"Well, that's the way SA'ers are...\". It more like people can do and rationalize some terrible things. Americans against the Native Americans, Nazi's against the Jews, \"ethnic cleansing\" in Bosnia, China against Tibet, and the list goes on.

I saw District 9 and I recall the film was set outside of Johannesburg in South Africa which is not even remotely close to Nigeria. I did not catch that the gangsters were supposed to be Nigerian, I assumed within the context of the film that they were a local criminal element and therefore South African.
There's a lot more going on in that movie than just the origination of the gang.
@spittingangels: Yes, they make a few references to the gangsters being Nigerians in the film. As for the Nigerian spam scams, any spam from any country is annoying and if people in general are naive enough to fall for something that obscenely shady..shame on them. Did the Nigerian government fall off the stupid tree this week? Johannesburg is in SOUTH AFRICA. Nigeria is nearly 3,000 miles away from the setting in the movie! Jesus H Christ, Nigeria should apologize for failing geography as well as history, considering apartheid WAS a reality in South Africa.
The gangsters in the movie were specifically mentioned to be Nigerian. That having been said, Nigerians are apparently a pretty big force in the South African underworld. Also, District 9 wasn't just about apartheid, but also about what's going on in South Africa today (look up the term necklacing, particularly in conjunction with Zimbabwean refugees.)
Considering that all the racist remarks from the start of the film were actually about Nigerians and they weren't scripted, that's actually how the South Africans view them...

I thought that it was refreshing for a movie to not be US-centric, until a friend pointed out perhaps it was only US-centric because it was portraying a country in a bad light. Nonetheless, playing off the Apartheid made it more real for me. I thought it was a well-thought out movie, but someone will always be unhappy about something.

Everyone wants an apology these days for every perceived wrong doing towards them. Nigeria needs to grow the F up and work on that crime and cannabalism if they don't want it portrayed in the movies.

It portrayed South Africa as being full of Nigerian gangsters and cannibals. There's a difference.

When I watched the film, I did find the sweeping generalization of Nigerians to be out of place and offensive. We know that the main character is not supposed to be an enlightened guy, so his comments are appropriate...but the movie then has his comments carried out in the portrayal of the Nigerians, where he was wrong on everything else. Hmm.
For a movie trying to talk about apartheid and racism, this seems very, very out of place.
I think asking the movie to be edited and such is ridiculous, but I'm NOT surprised there were complaints. Yes, there is criminal activity there, but it's not everyone and saying all Americans or Europeans are the same as their criminals is not accurate either.
I think this just proves that Nigeria needs a time-out from the web. So they can think about what they've done. Then we can start them on dial-up with monitoring software. As always, there are two ways to prevent people from hearing about your bad reputation.
1) Don't do things to give yourself a bad reputation, and if someone else does something wrong that reflects badly on you, do everything you can to make it right.
Or,
2) SCREAM your head off and raise a huge fuss every time someone mentions your bad reputation, in hopes of making everyone scared of talking about it.
Why do so many entities, from individuals to corporations to governments, always pick option 2?

OK, that is freaking funny. I just bought this DVD in Abuja, Nigeria for 400 Naira ($2.67), and it costs 1500 Naira ($10 to go to a movie theater -- and that's if you can find one)
I can say from experience that Nigeria is an awesome place to work. It's not exactly filled with gangsters, scammers, and DVD pirate, but they are certainly well represented.

Um, have they seen how American studio-funded movies portray our OWN criminals? At least the Nigerian gangsters were ruthless *and* clever in that movie.
@DarkKnightShyamalan: It is unfortunate that Nigeria COMPLETELY missed the point of this movie. It wasn't about the evil Nigerians. It was about the terrible way that South Africa treats and segregates its immigrants using aliens as a metaphor.
While SOME of the bad guys in the movie were Nigerians, I don't think their portrayal can do any worse for the reputation of Nigeria than the ousted Prince of Nigeria who will gladly pay you $200k to get back his $13 million.
