@Kyin: I hear what your saying (especially with the the pot) but I disagree. The intended recipients were just behind you, saw your car (and maybe the license #). They might follow you for a while, but would give up once you got to the police station. Now you have a gang that's pissed at you in town. And despite our macho fantasies, it may not turn out well.

But imagine the conversation at the station over the weed. They'd lock the teenagers up, then six hours later, go back to the McDonalds, where the clerk would have left. Give it several days before they pursue it further, which by then the clerk would say, \"Wha?! MariJUANA?!!\"
Both of them would be introduced to prison, filthy pot-smoking hippies.

@coren: Look at it through a police officer's view. Some teenagers come in and say they were given a bag from a McDonald's that has a gun and a bag of weed in it. They can't offer proof that that's how they are in possession of the items nor will any video surveillance that the store might have be of any help.
A police officer is trained to go on the facts he or she has. The only facts that are apparent to the officer is that these people are in possession of the gun and the weed with their story being unable to prove.
Since they luckily didn't get hurt by the people in the other car I think that was the best thing that happened to them. It would have been very unfortunate if they did try to give it to the police and they would up being charged. Remember, no good deed goes unpunished.
@Bogart's Falcon: Just Forget the Other Name: You forgot one big fact that the officer would have. That the two VOLUNTARILY came in with the stuff. The cop might want a drug test, but a DA would have to be the worst Drugwarnazi to try to prosecute or even look for a plea, and a Judge would have to be batshit insane to hear \"They came in and turn the stuff over\", see no priors, and not dismiss it right there and then.
Now, if they had been pulled over with the gun and weed on them... That would be a different case of reasonable doubt.
@Bogart's Falcon: Just Forget the Other Name: Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if no charges were brought had they turned it in - if the kids were trying to score drugs or deal or get high they wouldn't be bringing their product/stash in, and they came in voluntarily so it's not like some half-assed excuse they just came up with on the spot. I recognize the lack of supporting facts, but I think the officer would be incline to believe them, or at worst not charge them.

I would have driven to a police station, fire station, or at very least called the cops from my cell phone when I realized I was being followed by some people who wanted a gun and dope. Gas station would not be my first choice.

@MEoip: 911 would be my immediate reaction. Then, while on the phone, if I noticed I was being followed, it's probably already be too late to hand the goods over, since I'm on the phone with 911. Instead, I head to the freeway or something and just drive and do what the cops tell me to.

Um, the guys got away with the gun and drugs? Don't we know who their 'connection' was? Does that mean that the guy working at McDonald's is willing to go down alone for this? Surprising. Also, I used to tip the folks working the window at McDonald's, especially at Christmas time. I am not so sure that is such a wise thing to do anymore. They may have way more cash than I do.

Seems like a good bargain, Buy a meal and get a free gun and some pot. A value meal with actual value. if they could have drove off fast enough, they could have gotten away with the gun and the pot, then next time they went there, they could sell the pot back as a coupon for a discounted or free meal and kept the gun and used that chance to register for a license to own a gun. (guns are good for home security. when a criminal breaks into a home, if there in for killing who ever is in the house of they see them, then the police will never get there fast enough to save your life.
Have you ever seen a news report when the police get to a home or other location fast enough to save the life or do you just see then report the body count and and ask people to call a number if they can offer any information leading to a arrest. Police are not a substitute for self defense.

I'd definitely hand over the bag to the gangsters (I would probably be a hero if called on, but in this case resisting would simply be stupidity imo) and probably leave it at that. I'm not in the business of hunting down and disposing of gangsters who sell weed and carry .45 handguns. That's what my state taxes go for - paying our cops to do that job for me.

i would have called the cops, and explained the story, and asked them to send a cruiser to pull over the people who were following the innocent people. ofcourse, i also would have pulled over so the cops would know i wasn't lying.
Given that this was South Carolina, had I been given a gun like this, I would get rid of it immediately. The gun laws in SC are not worth playing with.
