@logicalnoise: Outside of the fact that plenty of people use T-Mobile in the US, it is a very popular carrier in parts of Europe as well. They may not be the biggest carrier in the US, but I switched to them from AT&T in 2004 and have been very happy with them overall.

Every highly paid actress claiming to use a drug-store hair, makeup, or skin product. Actually, what I want to see is their reaction when they're told they have to use what they're shilling.
@floraposte: Actually, a lot of professional makeup artists use a combination of different brands of makeup because some cheaper brands like Cover Girl may sometimes work better than MAC. So I wouldn't be surprised of an actress could walk out the door looking like a million bucks even if she only used Maybelline products.

Essentially he has about 20 credit cards and always pays off the balance before he gets the bill. This has caused him to have a 0 credit score. Kinda ironic that the guy who says he hates credit scores endorses a credit report company.

I don't get why people get down on celebrities for endorsing products. Everyone knows that if a rep from Chanel or Prada or even Burger King came up to them and said, \"We'll give you $500,000 if we can take your picture holding/wearing/eating our product and use it as an advertisement, and we'll even toss in a bunch of free samples\", they would be all over it.

I'm sure Tony Stewart likes Whoppers. But supermodels saying they use Revlon makeup or use Suave shampoo or whatever...yeah right.
@downwithmonstercable: If you want to get technical, most celeb endorsements include a clause in the contract stating that you will not use anything but product X for the duration of said contract. There have been several high-profile lawsuits over the years from companies that catch their celebs eating/drinking/using something other than their product.
And if someone is paying me hundreds of thousands of dollars to endorse a product, you bet your ass I'm going to say whatever they tell me to say about it (within legal and reasonable parameters of course).

I get annoyed thinking people spend ridiculous amounts of money on a dog, designer clothes, cars, etc that could otherwise feed thousands of people for a year, but that's just how money works: you can spend it on what you want.
Any non-essential (eg not required for staying alive in the most basic physical sense) item or activity could essentially be portrayed as a \"waste\" compared to helping others, but it's way too much to expect of others unless you're doing it yourself, and even then, it'd be a stretch.
There are amazing people who practice what they preach when it comes to giving everything to the less fortunate (mostly religious people in my experience), but if the rich aren't allowed to spend as they want, couldn't the same be said to anyone who isn't struggling for survival? \"You're buying a computer instead of saving starving children or curing cancer?\" \"You're eating expensive food instead of donating to charity?\" \"You're watching TV and commenting on a blog instead of spending your free time helping at a volunteer service group?\"

As Porkchop Express stated, it's a side effect of a different product. Just like Viagra (original use: heart medicine, new use: erection pill), aspirin (original use: pain medication, new use: heart/stroke medicine), Wellbutrin (original use: antidepressant, new use: anti-smoking aid), etc., etc.
Even better, the money that goes to Rx companies for these \"off label\" uses is money they can spend on developing new drugs for things you might care about more.
@Daveinva: I'm quite aware that it is a side effect of a different product. However, this doesn't make using it for the oh-so-important cause to lengthen itty-bitty eyelashes any more noble.
Perhaps you should inform your GF that the OTHER side effect of this drug are temporary to permanent darkening of the eyelids and mostly permanent brown stains on your eyeballs. This is (to me) far more of a physical problem than teeny lashes.
I doubt your GF will care what I think, and if she does she has larger problems than Latisse will cure.
And BTW, drug companies are some of the wealthiest companies on earth. Don't kid yourself, they aren't producing these alternative uses for these drugs because they need money to pay for more research. They are selling them for uses other than intended because there's always some sap willing to pay for them. Also, using Aspirin as heart/stroke medicine and Wellbutrin to stop smoking are medical uses and not purely vanity ones.

I'm still bummed about Tony Bourdain doing a commercial for Bing. I realize he's got a wife and a new kid (who will probably want to go to the Culinary Institute of America one day or insist on following punk bands throughout Europe), but I like to think that the rebel chef sells out to no one.
@The Porkchop Express: I actually don't mind Tom Colicchio shilling diet Coke because it's not the same as Guy Fieri or Tyler Florence shilling for bad chain restaurants. Bad chain restaurant food should be offensive to a chef who even utters one word about eating fresh and healthy things. But Diet Coke isn't a product that directly conflicts with what a chef may or may not say. Tom Colicchio has never said a word about HFCS or anything like that, I don't believe.

I really like his Welch's commercials because I, too, love Welch's, and won't drink a different brand of grape juice. And I like that the commercials tie into who he is - it's almost like a 30-second episode of Good Eats, complete with props and drawings.

@edguitar: I don't quite understand what you mean. He travels to faraway lands, and the foods that people eat there can sometimes be very different, even gross to a lot of people. I don't see how experiencing other cultures is \"morbid curiosity\" - I've been watching his show for years, and I never got that impression. I always interpreted it as him having a very healthy curiosity for the people of the countries he visits.
I also really like that he makes a point of thanking Latin Americans for their hard work because he has said that Latin Americans and South Americans work extremely hard within the American restaurant industry, and make up the backbone of the industry. He has written in his books about some of the best people he's ever worked with, and I always thought it was very unpretentious of him to not take the credit. People think chefs do all the cooking and preparation. This is definitely not true.

I found that the guy always has for lack of a better word a \"hidden agenda\" two of the biggest examples that come to my head are Laos and Colombia.
In the first it seems he wanted to show how f*cked was the whole mining the fields by american soldiers during WWII, while might be daily occurrences for some people I believe is not the way of life in Laos.
In the Colombia episode he was fascinated ( I think too much) with the \"myth\" of Pablo Escobar, to the point that he devoted 3/4 of the show only to the city of Medellin. It is hard enough to make people understand that Colombia is not equal to cocaine
and drug lords, and then some guy be so infatuated with this that he simply delivers the wrong message. thatt was what made wanna puke.
I can't see an inch of sincerity on the guy's rebel 70's punk life style. Deep down he is a snob, he makes Snobby comments every now and then where I believe shows his true nature.
For some reason everytime I see him, a saying that my granpa used to tell me comes to mind. \"every one is a rebel when you are either young or rich\"

@Radi0logy: I think he comes off as kind of pompous sometimes, but I also think he lambasts a lot of chefs for being pretentious. He goes to great lengths to eat food of all levels. It's not as if he only eats at ritzy restaurants on his show. He's a very happy purveyor of street food, and he does lambast other chefs for ignoring the real culture of food they themselves serve from the comfort of an expensive restaurant. He frequently seeks out locals who can show him the best flavors, and it's usually some hole in the wall place.

* They really are poorly made. Many pots, pans, knives, etc. came in dead last and are not recommended by the editors and testers of Cooks Illustrated, which, along with Alton Brown, are the the definitive source on kitchen utensils and cooking methods.

@The Porkchop Express: Celebrities trade on their name, popularity and fame. That gives them power and authority, even if they're really not authorities. I don't know if Kiefer Sutherland actually drives a Ford truck. But I recognize his voice because it's very distinctive, and that makes me pay attention to the commercial. It works. A lot of older people may do the same with Sam Waterson peddling TD Ameritrade. The man's been on Law & Order for ages, and people know his voice.

@The Porkchop Express: Yeah, I know what you mean. I'll use Ford as an example. Mike Rowe also does them, like you say, and I recognize him because I watch Dirty Jobs. If you don't watch Dirty Jobs, you probably wouldn't recognize him. So the point is not that they want to sell you a car because Mike Rowe (who, if you didn't know who he was, you'd just think was some actor, not a well known celebrity) thinks it's awesome - most people aren't going to think this way. What they want you to do is pay attention to the commercial itself. That's why these companies pay big bucks for celebrities to voice the commercials, even if they don't appear in them. You recognize these voices, and you pay attention to the commercial. These companies desperately want people to notice their product.

@The Porkchop Express: And that was the end of it for me watching the show. His show does a great service showing what goes on behind all the glitz, but then he taints it by shilling. If you're going to be objective, then pick one or the other not both.
Of course, it doesn't help matters that the show (and others on the same channel) has way too many commercials to begin with, along with the on-screen text of 'new episode' above their \"D\".

I totally identified Zach Braff as doing the very passive aggressive Brita filter ad I saw last night ('you know, except for being cheaper and better for the enviroment than bottled water, Brita tastes exactly the same, blah blah blah'). it was funny because I wouldn't have made him if not for the fact that he basically read the spot in chararacter as JD from Scrubs.

Just wanted to mention that polygraphs are complete psuedoscience. There is nothing about a polygraph that \"detects lies\"
Their only real use in law enforcement is to get you to think that they are real so that you confess. (This is a little bit of an oversimplification, but not much.)

@Trencher93: Ideally yes, and for some of the hand tools, I am sure that they do (Craftsman is a large NASCAR sponsor, and their tools, especially the professional series are quite good). As for the air guns and 1 pump jacks that they use during the pit stops, a consumer grade tool would never stand up to the abuse that they put it through during a normal race, and to my knowledge, no consumer grade jack manufacturer has a jack that can lift the car off the ground with 1 pump and that weighs only a few pounds. It is a specialized tool that no one outside the racing community actually needs.
Personally what bothers me more is the car branding...Driver X is driving a Chevy, no he isn't, he is driving a custom made car with a custom frame, custom engine and custom body made to look like a Chevrolet Monte Carlo (sort of) with a sticker for headlights and a Chevy emblem on the back.
@Rachacha: Aren't a bunch of the NASCAR engines Toyota engines now? Seems like that was how it was the last race I went to.
Dewalt is a big NASCAR sponsor and they have a tent at the races where you get to go through and use all the nifty power tools, even bigger ones like jackhammers. It was cool.

OK, I don't mind the Stewart ads now because he seems like kind of a smartass (not just in Whopper ads). But a lie detector? Eh, I dunno. Still, I'd rather see a thousand Tony Stewart lie detector tests than some of the crap that ad agency comes up with.

I would find it hard to believe he does NOT like Whoppers. Hell, I don't eat Whoppers anymore because I'm a vegetarian, and I'd still say I like Whoppers (I just don't eat them). I personally would like to know if Jerry Seinfeld uses a PC (I suspect he's a Mac user).

Any celebrity who shills for PETA and has also been spotted wearing fur/leather/eating meat/whatever specific thing they were arguing against.
Don't get me wrong, I've seen one or two PETA ads with celebs I like that were not particularly hypocritical - Tricia Helfer's Peta advert about taking good care of your pet comes to mind. Its just the \"I'd rather go naked than wear fur!\" actresses who clearly would rather go naked some days (or at least without undergarments) and then with leather/fur/etc other days.
It bugged the crap out of me when I couldn't remember where I had heard that voice. He's great for those commercials.

1. The thing is some people don't realize that when celebrities do commercials they cease to operate in whatever context they famous for, and become merely salespeople. Remember that big husky blond comedian who did all those Rolling Rock ads some years ago? Well during their heyday that guy won the industry award for salesman of the year. Thats the key point. They're not endorsing. They're selling. They've become salespeople. Nothing wrong with that except that people tend not to think of them as hired salespeople. Which is what they are.
2. Just because a whopper or any product is enjoyable doesn't mean its good for you. A syphilitic prostitute with herpes can give you the best BJ you've ever had, and you could honestly swear you've enjoyed it. But that doesn't mean its good for you.

Way back when, one of my college professors did voice overs for a national company. I asked why. One solid week's worth of work during the summer break and he was paid more than his professor's salary for two semesters full workload.
He also did donated his voiceover a wildlife preservation group so he wasn't totally bad.

Nascar is pretty important to people in the non-urban cities believe it or not, even I'm not sure why (it's not real racing), but...different strokes for different folks.

The local radio personalities endorsing Direct Buy... I've never heard a good thing about them other than their paid endorsements, and their sales tactics are just scummy.
