@Lauchlin MacDonald: The problem is that there's no fashion handbook for young adults trying to fit in. The part timers at Pac Sun aren't going to tell you those jeans are medically unsafe. But I really can't fathom a solution, guess we'll have to wait for evolution to take it's course.

@Travishamockery: A friend of mine has a pair of jeans by a company called GlitterBoy, or some such moniker, which specializes in making women's style skinny jeans that fit guys. For some reason they fit her better than the women's style skinny jeans made for women.

I have a pair of tight-ish jeans, but they have plenty of room in the junkal area. Mostly I go with relaxed to loose fit.

Corsets, bound feet, skinny jeans ... every culture has some sort of disfiguring fashion statement, it seems. Skinny jeans can be perfectly fine if they're well-fitting; it's only when people try to squeeze themselves into ridiculous sizes that they encounter problems. I think this is more an issue of the vanity of Western culture, as people will do anything to appear skinny, and ergo feel attractive.

I'd like to see someone try using things like Twitter and Facebook to really put the message out there.

@hungryhomer: I am pretty sure people have been binding their feet and getting their little toes lopped off for years in Japan. I read an article years ago that said the Japanese have been getting their pinky toes lopped off for what is probably centuries now (not saying every female does it but I am sure a lot do). There are far more extremely pointy toed high heels in Japan then there are in America.

And while they did disprove that particular instance of myth, their medical consultant did conceed that if the jeans were to shrink enough, there could be immediate adverse problems.

Exactly. MB does vastly more for the promotion of critical thinking and science than pretty much any show on TV. The point being that, well, it's TV and they are in that business to be entertaining...so no, they don't expose everything as a strict adhearance to the scientific method...and no, I don't necessarily recommend you take all of their conclusions as capital \"T\" Truth (in fact, at least once I have thought they missed something, maybe, myself). But the point stands that MB is probably the best show on TV that is actually providing positive role models applying critical thinking skills to everyday issues.

@YouDidWhatNow?: Agreed. What I really enjoy about Mythbusters, aside from the excitement the people have for what they do, is that they do promote critical thinking. They make very reasonable conclusions, make mathematics cool to learn, encourage learning by what they do, and show that you can be interested in science and have a lot of fun. Their audience ranges from 10 to 80, I think. So they've done a good job with the educational side.


No one on the show claims to be a scientist. Of all of them, Grant Imahara is the only one to have a degree specifically in a science or engineering field (he's an electrical engineer). But I really like that they're not scientists, they don't have PhDs and 20 years of experience in the lab and publishing papers. They're normal people with normal, regular degrees, and they just got into fields that require scientific knowhow, and they've made it really, really fun.

The problem with MythBusters is they bend the original \"rules\" of the myth until they can bust it. Like one myth that some guy broke out of prison by putting salsa on the bars of the window, wearing them down over 7 years until he could break out. They tried it over a period of 30 days, factoring in various outrageous possibilities like \"if they gave him a radio and he broke it open and stuck the wires in the salsa, it might work faster\", but eventually decided there was no way salsa could eat through steel bars in 30 days. Now, re-read this comment, and you'll see what's wrong with that conclusion.

Perhaps not every myth they bust uses standard scientific method, but honestly...can you show me a scientist that will be fluent in every single field they attempt to bust? They DO use scientific method for a lot of their experiments. Also note: what kind of show would it be if they stuck to strict methods and computer similations, etc....each \"experiment\" would take months or years, and would be extremely unentertaining. Most of the time, the results they find are \"close enough\" so you get the idea \"yeah, that could totally never, ever happen\" or \"hmm that is plausible...with a few adjustments here and there, that might happen.\"

@Saboth: I realize real science wouldn't make great TV. That's not my point. my point is that it may be great TV, but it is in no way good science. Yes, some of the things they test are tested well enough to get an idea. a lot of the episodes I just cringe at the way they're handling things, and sometimes that leads to a re-visit, sometimes not. A lot of the myths don;t even require thorough testing. it's \"can we get result x from scenario y with z?\" If they can they can, if they can't they can't. the problem is in people thinking the testing methods are correct, or that Mythbusters is definitive and overrides proper testing.

I guess I can see the leg thing, because skinny jeans are narrower cut in the legs. But I haven't heard that they're supposed to be tighter in the crotch than any other fashion jean--why would they be likelier to cause bladder and yeast infections? This sounds like morning-TV medicine to me.

@floraposte: When I was in high school in the 1980's we had the denim/spandex mix stretchy super tight jeans. I don't recall ever hearing about blood clots or infections or other health problems, and we wore those jeans TIGHT thinking we looked like a girl in a Motley Crue video. We were probably too distracted by our giant Aqua Net teased hairdos and frosted lipstick to notice if anything else wrong...

My mother had super tight hippie bell bottoms back in her day. They were skintight until they flared out at the ends. She mentioned using needle nose pliers to zip them up while lying flat and holding her breath.

I guess super tight jeans are popular with today's girls as well. Seems fashions come and go, but for some reason really tight jeans keep coming back. As an adult, I think it's dumb. But at 16 I sure thought my tush looked hot in the jeans.

Guess I'm happy I have a son. I'll be arguing with him about his pants being too baggy. :-)

@floraposte: I wonder if the seam pressing against the inside of your leg might contribute to unique problems? Jean seams are usually \"heavier\" and firmer/harder than seams in other pants, and there's always one up the inner thigh.

As for the yeast and bladder infections, that's going to happen any time your girly parts aren't getting to breathe enough. Denim is cotton, but it's not very breathable cotton.

@floraposte: I've tried on brands that are super tight pretty much everywhere-- think a pair of tights, only denim. Seriously, these things rode up into my feminine region and planted a damn flag there. Plus, you have a lot of people trying to squeeze themselves into too-small sizes, which only exacerbates the situation.

In fact, Dr. Avitzur agrees in the interview that this has been happening with all kinds of constricting clothes, not just skinny jeans; in the blog post, she simply says that \"constrictive clothing\" is associated with yeast and bladder infections, which is pretty old news.

The pinched nerve thing may be new (though why did it not happen in earlier rounds of skinny jeans? Is Lycra somehow developing sentience and taking revenge?), but overall this sounds more like an article of medical faith extrapolated from some not entirely relevant data. And no, I'm not a skinny jeans wearer, so I've got no dog in this fight.

I personally don't even find skinny jeans to look very good on most people anyway. I don't understand the craze. The lady said they were the antithesis of mom jeans, but that's what I see moms wearing all the time. I haven't seen \"mom jeans\" on moms in ages.

For those women who aren't big but wear tight clothes for image, go back to properly fitting cotton/spandex tights. At least they won't kill you.


In a similar vein, bicycle seats have been shown to cut off circulation and cause problems in men (impotence, damage to the prostate, etc.).


It just goes to show that humans are evolved to be naked and walking.

@Quake 'n' Shake: Um yeah, some people just shouldn't wear some styles, and I see this way too much around here. Fortunately the cool summer here has forced people to bring out the sweatshirts... Even if your overweight, its possible to make yourself look good by wearing the right clothes. If you squeeze into something that is 3 sizes too small and all your fat is hanging out, your going to look BAD! Also if you wear your clothes 3 sizes too big, your making yourself look bigger than you really are. I am not sure why some people don't understand this, no one is going up to you and looking at the tag on your shirt or jeans. If your that worried about it, cut the tag off. Its important to get the right fit with clothes, and look in the mirror before you go out!

Personally, I like wearing black Levis 510 Skinny jeans.

Dangling my junk down one leg or the other kind of comes with the territory. And yeah, sure...after about four or five hours out at bars and/or dancing it really starts to hurt. I wouldn't be surprised if wearing them made guys sterile.

But you know...hell, it's not like I'm ever gonna wear them to work for ten hours and it's also not like I wear them for anything other than getting laid.

And it really is much better than looking for rock and roll jeans in the ladies' section of thrift stores.

I have a pair of Monarchys that I regret buying. They look fantastic, but they are low-cut with a high crotch which makes them uncomfortable to wear for more than a few hours. You can also tell what religion I am.


Anyhow, I'm over it. No more discomfort for the sake of fashion.

I don't know if this was just a Midwest thing or not, but when I was in jr high and high school it was a popular thing for the guys to wear super tight jeans with western shirts and cowboy boots and there were multiple warnings and attempts to get them to stop because it was causing sterility.

If you are going to blow $200 on a pair of jeans, forgo the ones that are expensive because they are fashionable and go for the ones that are expensive because they are ridiculously comfy.


Adriano Goldschmeid makes a jean where the denim is so thin and flexible it's like wearing sweatpants. Except denim.


And, if you are in the denim-head crowd, it doesn't matter if you are not wearing jeans so tight that one ball has to rest in each leg. All people will do is look at the AG logo on your butt and tell you \"Nice jeans!\"
