Michael says:

My grandmother was on death's door, and we all knew that the time would come fairly soon for her to pass on. So, in preparation for the funeral, I dropped off my suit (like many people, I only have one) at Men's Wearhouse for alterations (I've put on a couple pounds since the last time I wore it) on July 11th. The original date that it would have been ready was supposed to be the 23rd, but no one in my family expected my grandmother to hang on that long. I was able to convince them to have it done on the 17th, no additional charge for the rushed job.

Well, she didn't last even that long. I got a call the evening of the 11th that she had drawn her last breath. I needed to be headed to MN from WI on Sunday the 12th. I called up Men's Wearhouse, frantic, expecting that I'd simply be out of luck for the alteration and have to find some other solution, but no! A brief check with the tailor's schedule had my suit moved to the front of the line, and it the first thing they would work on Sunday morning when the tailor got in at 11am, and it would be done at noon. That would leave plenty of time for me to make the 6 hour drive to my parents' house, and saved me from a lot of panic filled scrambling trying to get a suit that fit. And again, no additional charge for the rush, no hassles, no run around, nothing complicated. So thanks Men's Wearhouse for making the already painful experience just a little bit easier.

Our condolences, Michael, and thanks for the story.

An all red suit? That certainly is outside of the box.

P.S. I hate it when people use the phrase "outside of the box". It's incredibly cliche and overused. People will say it just to convince people that they are "outside of the box" when they totally aren't. How about "thinking outside of the box" and coming up with something new to describe how crazy your thoughts/actions are?

I've only had one bad experience with Men's Wearhouse; when I went there to find a tuxedo for my wedding they were very overbearing and actually hitting on my wife (now ex). I was extremely unhappy with them and finally I broke down in a rage and started yelling very loudly. I was about to actually fight one guy who was being a real dickhead, and I've never thought about doing that or been in a situation where I thought I'd have to do that before this incident. Those guys were real scumbags.

They were very patient and not trying to sell me anything, but let me make my choices. I heard their commercial stories and that is what led me to them. I will be back when it comes time for a new suit. :)

I had a similar situation with Men's Wearhouse. I live in Arizona, but was on Vacation in Florida visiting my father when I found out that my maternal grandfather had passed away. My suit was still in Arizona.

I arranged to have my suit and dress shirt overnighted to Chicago, where the funeral was. The catch is, I had spoken to the Men's Wearhouse there and arranged for it to be shipped directly to them so that it could be pressed and picked up that day.

They bent over backwards to make sure that I had everything I needed. They'll always have my business.

Mens Wearhouse always seems to do these kind of things. The one issue I do have is if they do this kind of thing, does it ever cause the 15 other people who were promised their suits by a certain time to be neglected. If it was originally going to take 12 days, I am assuming they are fairly busy. What happens to the guy going to a business meeting and is told his suit will be ready first thing Sunday morning, but suddenly the OP is jumped in front of him

Just don't bring in your suit during one of their annual sales. I tried to do just that a full week before a friend's wedding and was told there was "no chance" that they'd be able to have it done in time. Granted, it wasn't a simple alteration (I've lost 25 lbs since I bought the suit) but as often as I've heard stories of their tailors going above and beyond, I was stunned they wouldn't even try.

Men's Warehouse will always get my business. When I first went to purchase my suit, for an interview 4-days later, I didn't realize that they need a couple of weeks for tailoring. They bumped me up and had it ready the day before the interview. And the guy helping me, Keith, took me from nothing to a smooth-looking guy in just a few hours. They are great.

Fast-forward 6 years and my uncle dies suddenly. I have lost weight and need the suit altered for a funeral in three days. Again, they rise to the occasion and have it ready that morning. Men's Warehouse rules. I probably paid a bit more than somewhere else, but it was definitly worth it.

Within a few days we where preparing for a funeral and I needed to buy a suit for it. Mens Wearhouse had everything I needed and it was altered and ready to go easily within my 2 day time window. I think I spent 45 minutes at the store total, which during a very hectic few days was a great help. And to top it off, for me at least it was a really nice suit that I have worn at any function that a suit was needed since.

The tailor took it into the back and sewed on the buttons and then comp'ed the charge.

It can be on the expensive side, but for tailored business attire you could pay a whole lot more.

Once again, I love the service, I just wish they didn't carry only conservative, boring suits.

I would never have found my black suit with red pinstriping, including a vest, at TMW. It's sad, because if they carried things other then the typical Biz Pro wear, I'd spend a lot of money there. I try to buy a suit every 1-2 years. I rarely wear the jackets, but suit pants, dress shirt, faboo tie and a matching vest is sexy as hell. I currently own the black w/ red pinstripes, a light blue with gray pinstripes and a black, four button suit. My next ones on the list are a cream colored to white of some sort and an all red suit. Men's Wearhouse doesn't really cater to outside-of-the-box suits.

Men's Wearhouse has recently done right by us. My fiancé really needed a new suit (the one he got back when he was graduating college and 20 pounds heavier just wasn't cutting it) and ended up picking the one he looked best in, even though it wasn't one of the ones on sale.

A couple of days later, when he went to pick it up from the alterations, the salesman informed him that he (the salesman) had been mistaken, that the suit *was* on sale, and promptly issued a $150 refund to the credit card -- unasked.

They were also fantastic (same store) about getting him fitted for the tux for our wedding, so hopefully picking that up will all go beautifully this fall!

We had decided to buy my husband a suit for our wedding rather than rent one. Men's Wearhouse in Woodland Hills, CA was nice and the employees seemed friendly, but when they told us that the least expensive suits they had were about $400, we decided maybe renting was a better option. Although we lived in CA, the suit was going to be worn in Massachusetts - they were completely unhelpful about trying to figure out how we could do this. The only option we were offered was to pick up and return the suit in CA at an exorbitant cost due to the length of time we would need it (we were in MA for about 2 weeks). They told us it was because we needed the suit over Christmas, but I find it hard to believe we were the only people needing a suit at that time.

We went down the street to 3 Day Suit Broker and found amazing service, next-day in-house tailoring and incredible prices (2-piece suit, shirt, tie, socks and belt, AND the tailoring costs, for $130). The quality is great - my husband has worn the jacket only a handful of times, but wears the pants all the time.

It's nice to see that there are still some businesses out there that are interested in helping people stuck between a rock and a hard place. And OP, sorry about your grandma.

There is a locally based tailor in the Southtowne Mall in Sandy, UT that did something similar for me. I needed a rush job done but they usually only take pre-paid jobs. I only had plastic and they don't take plastic for amounts as small as my job. I was willing to pay the minimum amount they accepted for a CC charge to have it done but they offered to let me pay afterwords. Very nice people I highly recommend.

Nice to hear one of these "good news" stories. I bought a few things from them and have always been impressed by their friendly and professional service. Sure they suggested a couple of add ons like a couple shirts/ties to match the suit I bought, but never in a pushy or rude way.

Wish more companies would learn how far treating your customers nicely can go.

When I worked at the Men's Wearhouse, the tailors bent over backward to keep clients happy and ensure they had their clothing on time and correct. It was nice, no other tailor would be as accommodating and not charge an arm and a leg for rush fees.
