@Laura Northrup: Although this can be definitely be chocked up as anecdotal evidence or a fluke, I shop at Neighborhood Wal-Mart weekly and hit up bars regularly (at least twice a month, but, much more frequently when vacationing[like say, Independence Day weekend]) with my American Express. I haven't had any problems with my credit limit changing, and, per my request, it has only increased in the past few years. In case you're wondering, I am a graduate student with little income, but I do pay my balance in full every month.

I'm scratching my head over the \"don't use your card at Wal-Mart or 99-Cents-Only\" thing.
The same Scotch brand shipping tape found at 99-Cents-Only is three bucks at Office Depot. The $19 Savine slacks I recently purchased at Sam's Club look and fit just like the ones at Dillard's that were \"on sale\" for twice the price.
The only sure way I've found to have a credit card cancelled is not to use it. American Express recently sent me a letter stating my Optima Card (which I had not used once in the past three years) had been closed. Strangely, this letter arrived in the same week as two pre-approved offers for other AMEX cards.
Shopping for deals shows financial responsibility, not despairation. If my credit card company thinks otherwise, fuck them: My FICO score is 780 and I still fill my shredder every two weeks with unsolocited \"pre-approved\" card offers from their competitors.
@gman863: The people who make money for credit card companies tend not to be \"financially responsible\" in that manner. People spending full \"retail\" prices on things like that are probably more likely to be the people that have a large CC bill and end up paying interest on every payment...in general rather lax about their personal finances. However, people looking to buy things at decent prices probably won't be as likely to spend $$$ on things that they really don't need or pay interest on their credit card.

@gman863: The story does note you shouldn't suddenly shift a chunk of your spending to Wal-Mart and dollar stores. That could be a red flag you're in financial trouble. If you ALREADY shop there and it's not a significant change in habits, the story makes it sound like that isn't significant.
@silver-bolt: The idea that only poor people shop at dollar stores is a stereotype. Many low-price stores (99-Cents-Only, Big Lots, even Goodwill) are popping up in middle-income areas - often filling retail space vacated by more expensive stores that tanked at the beginning of the recession.
@Eyebrows McGee (now with more baby!): This is flawed logic on the part of credit card companies. If the same TV sells at Wal-Mart for $200 less than at Sears, would you pay the difference just to impress your credit card issuer?
My argument is consumers should not be discriminated against if they become savvier shoppers. While I agree certain things such as charging an excessive amount of lottery tickets or a sudden jump in cash advances are legitimate red flags, as a banker I would be far more alarmed if someone's credit card balance kept growing each month and only minimum payments were being made; regardless of where the purchases were made at.

(For example, it's been close to a year since I last had a massage. I expect to shortly go back to the spa LIKE CRAZY. Because I'm prettying up for a job hunt or need to burn off job stress? NO, because I was KNOCKED UP (no massages) and now I have a new baby and as soon as he can be parted from my boobs for more than two hours, HELL YES I'm getting new-parent-stress kneaded out of my shoulders! But their system would just flag it as \"600 other people did this for job stress, that must be her reason too.\")
But the point was you weren't being penalized for SPENDING at Wal-Mart, just for SHIFTING a lot of spending there all at once (presumably with no other precipitating factors, like a move that changed all your shopping habits). (And I'm going to doubt making one TV purchase there is going to count as shifting a lot of your spending.)

Seems far stretched. People have different outlets for stress, pretty much any entertainment -- tickets to the movies, dinner at a nice restaurant, buying a new TV, etc. I get a facial once a month and pay with my MC cause they don't take Amex, which is my plastic of choice. I am gainfully employed, earn a high income and am not stressed. My skin looks great though :p

Regarding numbers 4 and 10, credit card companies are hardly in the position for making moral judgments.
No moral judgments, just correlations. Frankly, if there was a high correlation between buying \"Plan Your Own Pogrom\" kits and paying your bills on time, they'd raise the internal ratings of people who bought those kits.
I have this one credit card that, for some reason, I rarely use except at the liquor store and the cheap haircut place. Last year, I paid some extensive vet bills with it, too.
It has occurred to me before that this probably looks pretty bad, but I just don't care enough to stop doing it. If they want to think I'm just some beer swilling dog lady with a dumb haircut, well, let's just say I probably couldn't make a case for libel or anything.
What's happened is, the CC issuers have compiled statistics that tell them that people who shop at certain places default on their payments more frequently than people with higher shopping profiles. It is not personal, it is simply a self-protecting mechanism based on statistical analysis. Stupid? Yeah, probably, but not meant to be personally punishing. Might even be illegal in some locales.
I knew it.

It seems to me that your credit card company wants to control your personal life. Thank God I carry a zero balance after all these years. If I hadn't shredded my Amazon Chase card, I might be tempted to see how many of those ten items I can charge to my card to the exclusion of everything else. Cash for gas and groceries, credit for Maker's Mark...scratch that...Popov vodka. That's a double whammy since they probably already know I like Maker's Mark, especially while watching pr0n, doing my taxes (the IRS lets you pay by CC for convenience's sake), and scratching lottery tickets.
Of course, I consider myself fortunate that I can have such a cavalier attitude toward the credit card industry.

I don't have any problems using my card for anything I want. My limits haven't been adjusted and the interest rates on them don't matter to me because they're carrying a $0 balance month to month.

The very basic premise is to offer goods for sale that people want and they will buy them. The seller has to offer superior customer service to retain and gain customers and the \"customer is always right\"… If the service is bad, the consumer is obligated to \"vote with their wallet\" and stay away from the seller.
Why has the paradigm shifted so much now that the Consumers are the Seller's \"enemy\" and the consumers have to bend over backwards to appease the seller?
Now the attitude has gone from \"How can I earn your business?\" to \"Here's your credit card you piece of shit, don't make me take it back!\"

When I used to hang out in bars more often, I looked at buying my drinks with cash as a combination of good budgeting and good management of how much I actually drank. At a bar I frequented I'd know how much drinks were... figure how many was an OK amount plus tip, take that much cash and head off drunken decision-making issues.

In the past month I've used my CC to pay for: five different prescriptions, a parking ticket, visits to my psychiatrist, booze, eyebrow threading, a sonogram (not for pregnancy,) various circuit boards and microcontrollers, and clothing and a purse at a sample sale. My credit card statement only shows the stores I shop at, not the individual itemized receipt of the purchases. If I go to the gas station and buy gas and a lottery ticket, how would they know? I thought it was just reported as \"Whatever Gas Station: $35.60.\"
Some things would be easy to tell the nature of your purchase, like the Totally-Stressed-Out Day Spa or Shots 'R Us liquor store. It would also be hard to disguise Dr. Nasty's House of Porno. But how many billion people shop at Wal-Mart? A sudden change might be suspect, if you usually shop at Banana Republic twice a week but now you're at Goodwill all the time. But I don't know a single person who doesn't shop at a discount store once in a while. Where else can you get a car battery, a Rubik's cube, a can of paint, tampons, and cookies at 3 a.m.?
@dprboyne: Actually, most credit cards can separate gas from other items - especially cards that pay extra bonuses on gas purchases.
If I buy gas and groceries at Kroger, one transaction shows up as \"Kroger - fuel\" and the second only as \"Kroger\".

Really, really, REALLY tempting for the now-20something offspring of the working poor, like me. But I know better.
I put a manicure and pedicure on my card sometimes, then pay it right off for the reward points. There is a beautiful Noelle day spa near me. I like to get my toes done in summer. Once or twice a year, I get a massage there too.
Why is manicure and pedicure akin to retreading tires and buying lotto tickets?
I don't think you can buy lotto tickets on a credit card. At least not in Illinois.

The only debt I have is a Visa card, which has a fifteen hundred dollar limit. The only time I use it is for online purchases because I like having the ability to dispute the charge if I don't recieve what I ordered. I bet that Visa secretly thinks I'm a credit risk because I buy so much Lego because I need A HOBBY TO ESCAPE THE ETERNAL HELL OF WORRY IN WHICH I AM COCOONED BECAUSE I HAVE NO MONEY.
I don't know as much as I hate profiling I know someone who charged things like sport and concert tickets , vacations , golf outings ,dress clothing, and bought a luxary car and is now on the verge of bankruptcy .
They knew they would loose their job at 3 months in advance . Spent to the end . Their credit/debt $$$ prior to loosing their job was equal to at least a third of their yearly salary .

Skeptic here. How can the credit car company tell if a given charge is for retreading your tires? All that will show up is a charge by a garage or a tire company, right? Same goes for lottery tickets and booze.

I suppose it's obvious in some cases, like discount stores, adult bookstores, liquor stores, cash advances, etc. But how do they know if (say) you bought a lottery ticket instead of a Coke and chips at the gas station, or beer instead of healthy food at the supermarket?
Most of this list is self-explainatory... but Personal Pampering? Seriously? I _always_ charge pedicures and I'd imagine, if I ever got time to take a break, I'd charge a spa day or a massage. I can't really see a reason not to. It's not like it's incriminating or illegal.
What they should be looking for is people putting groceries on their charge cards. I have always said, once you have to start charging groceries, you know you're in deep trouble. I agree about the booze and cash advances also.
@retailriter: My groceries cost 1% less than yours all year round. Avoiding use of a credit card for any purchase is silly; not paying it off is sillier.
What state allows lottery tickets to be bought with credit?
