While you may be able to teach a 5 year-old the difference between pills and candy, it is quite a different story with toddlers. This was a really bad idea.
On top of the idea of handing out candy in Rx vials, I have a big problem with a stranger (and I don't care if he/she works there or not) handing my kid candy without asking me first.

I teach in Korea, and I don't know whether Ritalin is common here, but I'm in a rather poor area, so I doubt it would be. I have one boy in one of my classes who simply could not sit still. He was constantly squirming in his seat, distracting his deskmate, talking in class... just disrupting the class all around. The homeroom teacher must have figured out what the problem was, because he was moved to the front of the class, then shortly after he showed up with a new set of glasses. The only problem I've had with him since is that he keeps getting ahead in his workbook and completing the exercises before they are assigned. If the teacher had just recommended medication he would probably still be spending half the class standing at the back of the room being punished.

@takes_so_little: She said "Don't take this the wrong way, but I've been doing this for 20 years, and I can tell when a child has a medical condition. Here is someone you should contact, he can tell you what type of medication will help." She wrote down the name of someone in particular that she recommended. Perhaps other parents used him.

Maybe you're right, and she meant a series of tests, and I took it the wrong way. I realize she did not mean it maliciously, she was trying to help.

Regardless, I took her advice that "something" was wrong, and called my pediatrician. She said that sometimes kids with mild to moderate vision problems are mistaken as having ADD or mild Autism. She recommended a pediatric opthamologist, before spending hundreds on psychiatric tests possibly not covered by insurance.

We made the eye doctor appointment and sure enough he was near sighted. We picked out some cute frames and sent him into school the next day, and the difference was amazing. The teacher said. "I knew something was wrong, I just didn't know what." Now he can focus, and everyone is happy.

But it makes me wonder, how many kids are misdiagnosed as having a disorder when they really need glasses? As some other people have attested to, they were prescribed medication as children without ever having spoken to a doctor or having any medical test. The drugs appear to have been prescribed on the parent's word.

Luckily it does appear the "medicating" trend has changed, and children are more likely to get extensive testing these days than they were say, 10 years ago. Medication is really helpful for those who need it. But they should be properly tested prior, and behavioral therapy tried first.

When my wife was pregnant with our last child she developed gestational diabetes (pregnancy related diabetes, often goes away after baby is born). She had a prescription for a diabetes drug and filled it at a new CVS nearby. I guess because the store was new the pharmacy was giving away a large Hershey's bar with each prescription filled. Taped to the bar was some note about how great their pharmacy is and how happy they are to have you as a customer. So here is my wife, getting diabetes medications filled at CVS, and getting free candy with the prescription.

@takes_so_little: I think a lot of that has to do with where you teach. I worked as a "floating" pharmacy technician while I was in college, which meant that I went to many different stores whenever they needed extra help. It was amazing to see the different kinds of drugs that went out in each neighborhood. The very affluent areas had enormous amounts of Ritalin and Adderall prescribed. It was amazing. I hardly saw a single prescription for these go out in the less affluent areas of town.

@takes_so_little: Congrats on being in a school district that doesn't suck. A friend of mine had to pull her kids out of school because they gave her an ultimatum -- medicate your five-year-old or we won't teach him. (Which, incidentally, is illegal.)

The problem with her 5-year-old? Reading at a second grade level and BORED OUT OF HIS MIND so acting up. As bored children do. They said it was a learning disability combined with ADHD and he had to be medicated or could not attend school.

Her boys are homeschooled now.

No doctor writes a prescription for grape Mad Dog 20/20 or a vanilla Frapaccino.

Additionally, adults have a choice about what you may call self-medication. Children are dependent on the choices of adults. And while I would never accuse parents of intentionally putting their children at risk by medicating them unnecessarily, I believe it is a distinct possibility that they may be making the wrong decisions based on the information provided to them by the medical community and the pharmacutical industry.

I wonder how man ever made it to the moon without Ritalin.

At my table, I was one of 5 kids on Ritalin, Concerta or adderall. This is just an anecdote, but I went to school with sooo many kids on medication. The pediatrician who prescribed it never spoke a word to me (only to my parents) before she wrote the prescription, nor did she suggest behavioral therapy to my parents, as she should have. You could say she handed out Ritalin prescriptions like candy.actually needed to be on it. The pediatritian who perscribed it never spoke a word to me before writing the presciption, nor did she suggest behavioral therapy to my parents, as she should have.

Wow, stunning stupidity. And it could've been a good idea, too. I pick up scripts at different pharmacies, depending on time of day and my location. However, if there was one that gave out free candy, you know, NOT IN THE SCRIPT BOTTLES THEMSELVES, my kid would be bugging me to go to that one. Hell, I'd probably go without his impetus. I like candy. So that way, it's the PLACE that the kid associates with candy, not those little amber bottles.

The place I grocery shop at has free cookies for kids. I'm not saying I do whatever my son begs me to do, but he will definitely voice his opinion if I consider going to a different store. Luckily, the cookies don't come packaged in skoal tins.
