A lot of people are confused when it comes to OSX security. It's not that the OS is invulnerable. Far from it. It's just that it holds such a tiny market share that writing malware for it is pretty much pointless. Most businesses (including banks), run on Windows. Since that's where the big money is, that's what the malware is written for. If all these businesses were running OSX, it would be pretty much the same story. NCR ATMs send the card number and PIN up to the host encrypted. Only the last 4 digits are stored in the ATM logs. Some banks do have a card which will send the ATM into a supervisor mode (but only a few do this, and you need a PIN to get into supervisor using the card). And once in supervisor you have NO access to any of the previous user's personal data. Essentialy just ATM maintenance functions, changing settings etc. The worst you could do is change the value of the cash cartridges but that rips the bank off not the people who have visited the ATM. </p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(13802203, 'IrvinCentaur')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-13798738\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\">Anonymous </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/06/meet-the-virtual-atm-skimmers.html#comment-13798738\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-06-23T05:31:15-05:00\">June 23, 2009 5:31 AM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(13798738);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=13798738');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>Remember how old Windows 3.1 ran on top of MS DOS? That's how most atm software runs. There is a layer above Windows XP that operates the encoding, the mechanical, diagnostic and financial portions. Older atms made by Diebold, Fujitsu and NCR still run OS/2. I've reloaded quite a few. The reference made about inserting a card and triggering a program to run is certainly true. When a bank employee needs to balance or replenish the cash they will use a 'balance card'. When this card is read it tells the machine to run a different set of menus that allow much more access to records of that machine. So it seems logical that a piece of malware logging the codes could be triggered to print them out. But you would need access to the os from the inside or on the network [many are still dial-up] to install the malware AND you have to get your hands on a balance card and rewrite it with the correct sequence. These card also require a PIN. Also, I have never seen an atm that can 'eject its banknote storage cassette out into the street'. One, they're in a safe and two, you have to actually push them into place and lock them down. BTW - Only your PIN is encrypted when it goes over the network. The info from the mag strip is not.</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(13798738, '')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"reply-container\" > <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-13935093\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=45558\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=45558\">brianary</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/06/meet-the-virtual-atm-skimmers.html#comment-13935093\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-06-29T16:05:42-05:00\">June 29, 2009 4:05 PM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(13935093);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=13935093');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>@<a href=\"#c13798738\" rel=\"nofollow\">DominiqueAnchialus</a>: By \"above\", do you mean as alternate input/output devices?</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(13935093, 'brianary')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> </div> <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-13796005\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=1142779\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=1142779\">IISaiNtII</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/06/meet-the-virtual-atm-skimmers.html#comment-13796005\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-06-23T01:46:34-05:00\">June 23, 2009 1:46 AM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(13796005);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=13796005');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p><p>@<a href=\"http://consumerist.com/5300026/meet-the-virtual-atm-skimmers#c13792543\" rel=\"nofollow\">brianary</a>: <br />Windows is the industry standard. Although there are no keyboard or mouse plugged into the machine it is fairly easy to get at the windows desktop. If the machine is running in \"locked down\" mode it will simply reboot when a USB device is plugged into it and go out of service, however if a keyboard is plugged in and booted to the desktop you can basically do anything to it. In the United States at least, credit card companies have written a set of standards that must be followed by anyone accepting credit/debit cards (called PCI Compliance Standards). While it is true that just about every ATM in the world runs Microsoft Windows, in order to comply with PCI Standards to the fullest extent, ATMs in the United States generally have keypads and card readers that encrypt data BEFORE it is sent to the computer. When you insert your card, the reader spits out an encrypted stream of data, which is then relayed to the credit card company along with your encrypted pin. Once there, they are both decrypted and matched. If the two match, the credit card company sends the ATM a signal allowing transactions on the account. At most banks, the computer inside the ATM never actually sees your pin or any information stored on your credit card.</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(13798759, 'whalebro')\">Reply</a></div> <!-- if it's a top level category ' --> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (top level parent) --> </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\"> <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-13799948\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=53958\"><img src=\"/mt-static/support/assets_c/userpics/userpic-53958-100x100.png\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=53958\">Julius Seizure</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/06/meet-the-virtual-atm-skimmers.html#comment-13799948\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-06-23T09:21:40-05:00\">June 23, 2009 9:21 AM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(13799948);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=13799948');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>When I worked in the banking industry (about a decade ago) all (yes, all) ATMs ran proprietary operating systems that knew only a few things (basically talking to the physical devices, preparing data transactions, coping with the response and communicating with the encryption box.) They didn't run Windows and I doubt the cpu was compatible. And the cash cassettes were inside a small, steel safe that had to be open before a cash cassette could be removed.</p><p>I could put the ATM into supervisor mode using a trigger card <b>and by flipping a physical switch deep inside the ATM's safe</b>.
