@pecan 3.14159265: having grown up in the Washington DC Metro area and am going to LA for college, I can make an honest comparison between Five Guys and In-n-Out:

In-n-Out SUCKS. My God. Five Guys BLOWS THE CRAP out of In-n-out in price, taste, and \"features\". Five Guys gives you all the peanuts you could eat, for free, self-serve, while you wait for your burger and fries. Five Guys also lets you pile on as many toppings as you want, for free, and skip crap like lettuce that adds little flavor, just crunch in a burger meant to be chewed down. Only thing In-n-Out has on Five Guys are the shakes and that's ONLY because Five Guys doesn't make any - if Five Guys decided to start making shakes it would be freshly-made shakes damnit and not just something culled from a machine with a lever like at McDonalds.

Seriously, if Five Guys opened in SoCal then people would see why their sainthoodage of In-n-Out is entirely misguided.

I was dragged to one outside Philly several years ago - dragged because I hate fast food and really didn't want to go... little did I know that Five Guys is something special. Now there's one in Center City & I was sad to be leaving when I got a new job - until I found out it was in DC! Five Guys heaven.

@pecan 3.14159265: In-N-Out really has it's own thing goin on in SoCal...it's weird. The picture you see is basically the entire menu...a burger and fries. You can customize the burger in a huge variety of ways (there's even a secret menu of unlisted options you can order from, at any In N Out) but at the end of the day they really only sell 1 burger.

And the place is ALWAYS hoppin. It's hard to find an In N Out without at least a small crowd.

Friend came out to visit from East Coast and first thing we did after leaving LAX is went to In N Out for his Double-Double Animal Style.

@pecan 3.14159265: Being a California resident, I'm fortunate to have an In-N-Out 2 blocks from my house. Except, I find In-N-Out totally overrated.

I know a lot of my co-workers [who work out of state] LOVES In-N-Out, and always goes there when they come to LA.

Almost everyone has told me that In-N-Out is one of the best burger chain they've ever ate at. To me, it's ok. I've had better.

Maybe my apathy in In-N-Out is because I've had too many of it. I mean, I once gorged down at least 5 double-doubles in a one hour span....

On my infrequent trips to Southern California, I make it a point to visit a Tommy's and an In-n-Out at least once each. Very disappointed not to see Tommy's on the lists; perhaps Zagat needs \"Regional\" categories. Over/under 5000 locations seems a little arbitrary.

@pecan 3.14159265: Five Guys is pretty awesome, even more so that they cook all of their burgers 'well' (no choice) and they still taste like burgers. Nice and juicy with generous toppings. However, most people could order a junior (single piece of meat) and be perfectly happy. The fries are among the best evah...fresh, hot and with just the right amount of salt.

In N Out is mana from heaven, and it's actual beef cooked to order (open kitchen next to drive thru) as the fries are cut and fried to order they don't have the artifical golden color everyone else's processed and additive laden \"fries\" do.


Plus they have great fresh veggies for the burgers and tons of ways to get it made.

@nakedscience: Doesn't Five Guys do that? I only ask because I don't remember freshly peeled potatoes looking quite that ....pale...but maybe the Five Guys near me has been overcooking their fries.

@ravensfire: If you have been raised on frozen/fast food fries, your image of fries has been altered by the many ways food processors manipulate frozen fries. Frozen fries are slightly vacuum dried to reduce their moisture (preventing sogginess after cooking), and they are shellaced with substances to make them crisper and to add flavor.

For best results with homemade fries, they need to be blanched. That means they should be dropped into a 300 to 325F pot of oil and cooked briefly, say 2 minutes, then removed and drained. When cool and drained, fry them again until done. Blanching gelatinizes the starches on the exterior of the fries, making them crisper.

For those of you who find In-N-Out's fries to be pale and softer than what you're used to, you're right, they are, because In-N-Out uses fresh potatoes and doesn't blanch before cooking (too time consuming and messy).

If you make fries at home and want a crisper result, soak your fries for 15 mins in a bowl of cold water with a splash (1/4 c) of white vinegar. The acid retards browning of the exterior of the fries. This allows you to cook them longer/crispier, without burning their exteriors.

(And they are expanding. There are now some in New England where my parents are. Where we are in NoVA naturally I can name the nearest three off the top of my head. And one is walking distance from our apartment.)

@pecan 3.14159265: In-N-Out is only in California (and Las Vegas) becuase all ingredients are delivered fresh every morning to each store which means they need to be within a certian distance to the central distribution facility. They're all open until at least 2 am and they are ALWAYS packed because it's so farking delicious.

@zonk7ate9: They are also in Phoenix, AZ. I remember the furthest North you could get IN-N-Out was just past the grapevine. Now they have reached San Fransisco.

From reports though the Vegas and Phoenix ones don't taste quite right.

I am not a fan of their fries however. I think its because they pat them down and get rid of the oil. They are usually too dry. Love me a double double though. used to get 4x4's religiously, and have even hit up the 8x8. Could never put up the courage for more.

@grokdesigns: In-n-out can't expand beyond those 4 states(Ca, NV, UT and AZ) because it can't be too far from their distribution centers, which use local food supplies. That way quality is controlled. I can't ever see them coming to the East coast, ever. Sorry. I'm very close to In-n-out corporate, including the corporate employees there. In-n-Out company picnic on Monday, good times...

@MalvaClytius: in-n-out can be expanded as much as they want. all you need to do is build a new distribution center. it's not like we've lost the ability to build a refrigerated warehouse since in-n-out opened.


i've heard that the reason they have stayed so close to home is because the owner wants it that way. allows him to have better control over quality and consistency between restaurants. i've also heard that his kids are ready to whore the chain out to the rest of america as soon as they get control.

@stre: In-N-Out is a privately held company owned by one family. They own every location. No franchises. There is discussion that when the next family member dies, the new generation is talking about going nationwide. But the question is the quality control. So I would expect they'll get there, but it will be over a decade instead of over a year, like ill-fated expansions of Boston Market and Chipotle.

@pecan 3.14159265: 5 guys isn't widespread enough I don't think. The same argument can kind of be used for In and Out except they have much greater brand recognition helping them. Take McDonalds for example. Their food is awful yet they tend to do well in these sorts of things because of the sheer number of people that eat at them.

Luckily they just opened a 5 guys next to my house. Still no In and Out :(

I've lived in California for 17 years now, and I've never heard anyone say or write what you just did about In-N-Out. I'm not blasting your opinion... I'm just really surprised by the way you said it.

Example: My brother loves In-N-Out. On one trip back in 1998, he ended up getting a HORRIBLE bout of food poisoning from a burger there. Vomiting, diarrhea, the works. I thought he would have given up In-N-Out for good.

He still ended up eating there a week later, and hasn't stopped since (about once a month).

Again, I'm not criticizing you, just amazed that I've never really heard that level of hatred (\"fucking terrible\") leveled towards them. Here in SoCal, they've got a pretty much sainthood status.

@Do not taunt Happy Fun King Psyz: The real In-N-Out doesn't use roles, but freshly baked buns. I hope so too, if the Geoirgia location sucks as much as you guy say, then I don't want them giving the best fast food resturaunt ever a bad name.


On a side note, is it true Carl's Jr. isn't nation wide? Someone told me they didn't have one where they lived before, I always assumed it was big like Wedny's, McDonalds, Taco Bell, and Burger King because they are just as common here in California as the ones I listed. That might explain them nto being on the list because their burgers are deffinately better than the resturaunts I listed.

The Carl's Jr. corporate office is in SoCal which is why its pretty big here.

@valthun: Carl Karcher Enterprises, which is Carl's Jr. was only west of the Mississippi until they bought out Hardees, which was based in the South. They combined menus and are nationwide now.

Other chains only out west (which is not unusual because fast food places except for Burger King mostly started in Southern California) are Jack in the Box (not in many midwest states), Weinerschnitzel (in Texas, but not the rest of the Midwest) and Del Taco (horrible food, except for awesome fries).

And no matter what anyone tries to tell you, the original McDonald's is not in Illinois. It was owned by the McDonald brothers in San Bernardino, CA. Ray Kroc bought the name and the franchise rights from them.

Panera is a joke. A tiny sandwich that would probably cost 3 bucks at Subway for $7? No thanks. Never been to In-N-Out Burger but they get a pass for being in The Big Lebowski.

I grew up about 45 minutes from Lake Havasu, where the first In 'n Out in Arizona was opened. I was a senior in HS. We used to drive there JUST to eat at In 'n Out (we usually drove to the London Bridge and ate 'em there).

@Do not taunt Happy Fun King Psyz: Where did I say that In-N-Out burgers aren't tasty? (Their fries are another matter, explained below.) Of the five on that list, it's certainly the best.

It's just that in the end, it's still a fast-food burger. It may be the best fast-food chain burger, but it's no Chuckbox, where the burgers are grilled over searing-hot charcoal (no really, the bricks around the grill are blackened and deformed from the heat) by a Mexican with missing teeth. The Chuckbox is a real burger. In-N-Out? Just a fast-food burger, manufactured in a factory in Southern California.

@Michael Belisle: Not only that, at the Chuckbox, you have to yell your order to a guy who encodes your wishes in a secret toothpick code. A typical order might end up as a bent wooden toothpick, a little plastic sword, a straight yellow toothpick, and a condiment cup, all stuck in your bun. I've always wanted to try ordering a bunch of toothpicks and seeing what I get, but they run the ordering operation like the soup nazi. I'd get kicked out of line.

In-N-Out, though, was the most disgusting \"burger\" I've ever tasted. I had a friend from SoCal who always wanted to go there; I tried it once and couldn't finish it. And somehow the fries managed to be soggy, which is something I never experienced anywhere else before or since. After that I made him drive thru the Whataburger for me first.

I'm pretty confident that you have ever stepped into an In-N-Out burger. Or know anything about them.

In-N-Out does not even buy ground beef. They ground it themselves. Do you do that? They have outrageously stringent rules for their suppliers and select and cut all the beef at their own headquarters in Baldwin Park, California. The meat they use is better than the meat you buy for home from the supermarket.

They also freeze nothing. It is trucked daily to every restaurant. Every day. They have no microwaves. No heat lamps. Not one order is prepared until it is ordered.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT????!!!! They don't have prepared fries at In-N-Out. They have potatoes. Which they slice right in front of you. And not until you give your order.

We have In-N-Out here in the Bay Area, but I don't know how they could win best burger. I've tried them twice and I don't see what all the hype is about. They're not very good. Thin little chunk of psuedo-meat topped with the usual. Most unremarkable at best. Although they are fairly cheap.

@BZMedia: I would agree with you that fast food chain burgers won't ever compare to a \"real\" burger. It's just not feasible to expect them to do so (and there's smaller burger joints that definitely do that).

I mean, chain food is really a category of food almost on its own.

But, in my opinion, In-N-Out is definitely the best of the chains we're talking about here. Yes, it's not top-grade sirloin or anything but at least it's fresh, local, unfrozen beef. Take that for what you will, but it does make a difference.

Because anyone with zero cooking experience can buy quality beef and smash it into a disk and cook it, and have it be juicy and delicious even without any toppings. This is not profitable for a fast food chain. Thus, you get the tiny hockey puck psuedo-burger instead.

First you slice the potatoes. Then you soak them in water. Then you fry them once at a lower temperature until they turn floppy and golden. (This is the point where fry factories would ship them to stores). Then you fry them once more until they're crispy and delicious.

I must be picky, because the two In-n-out locations I've gone to in north county San Diego produced a burger of lower taste than Carl's Jr (bad!). Wendy's and their paper thin burgers are also lame, and before the local Whataburger closed up shop I tried them too and was disappointed. The burger king here is EXCELLENT though, best fries evar and the Steakhouse XT has to be the best heart-attack-on-a-bun ever invented.

We don't have Chipolte or In-and-Out or Whataburger. But we DO have Hardee's and their Angus Thick Burger is easily the best fast-food burger out there with Wendy's coming in 2nd. All of the Burger Kings around here are horrible.

Zagat's survey is inherently biased towards large chains. The fact that Starbucks won \"Best Coffee\" pretty much kills all credibility the Zagat survey has in my book. There aren't that many chains that sell speciality coffee. Should we be surprised that three of the largest (Starbucks, McDonald's, and Dunkin Donuts) rank in the top 5?

FiveThirtyEight does a good job of elaborating on the flaw.

@Jesse: But that's kind of the point. The larger chains may seem better only because not enough people have been exposed to the smaller chains. I think Nate approaches the point on FiveThirtyEight but doesn't quite get to it.

It's not like 6,000 people rated all of the restaurants in a particular category ... the problem is that there's no way to know how people would have rated the places they haven't been, or how visiting those places might have affected their ratings of the places they have been. (Without going to Peet's, I think Starbucks is a 3. After visiting Peet's, I think they are a 3 and Starbucks is more like a 2.)

@Jesse: That's very true. They can rate the best restaurants and if they're all in different geographical areas without much of a spread, that helps only the people in those areas. In-N-Out might be mostly in SoCal but there are enough locations that a lot of people would pay attention to the Zagat survey. If it was Pop's Burgers that has five locations in Minneapolis, only people from Minneapolis and its surrounding areas would pay attention.

If you live in Phoenix, for example, it's probably much more useful to you to get your data from the New Time's Best of Phoenix. Then you would learn that The Chuckbox, which has but two locations, has the best burger in Phoenix (at least it did in 2000. I'll pretend that it was retired with the lifetime achievement award so someone else could win for a change).

In-N-Out is confined mostly to the SW U.S.; Chick-fil-A is mostly southern U.S.; Whataburger is Texas and it's territories (e.g. Oklahoma and New Mexico) and throughout the south. Papa Murphy's has just over a thousand locations and is based in the NW U.S., although their franchise locations are scattered throughout the U.S. and Canada.

@Ratty: Del Taco is a chain with just over 500 locations. It's much better quality than Taco Bell, but many people haven't eaten there. Unlike Taco Bell, Del Taco continues to use freshly cooked beans, real cheese and sour cream, and generous amounts of tomatoes, lettuce and onions in its food - even cilantro.

Surprised there's only 500 or so locations. oh well. I rarely do fast food with Del Taco being my exception. A bean burrito with red sauce is a perfect work lunch, and their taco nights are a great deal for my \"do not cook\" night a week. Fed and stuffed 2 adults and had food for lunch for just over $5 on tuesday.

No White Castle? Travesty! I have driven an hour out of my way in Northern NJ and NY just to get some burgers and fries. Now THAT is dedication!

In college in Northern NJ, two of my film major friends were remaking a scene from Harold and Kumar. So they did a White Castle run. Everyone in the dorm heard about it, gave them money, and they ended up buying almost $500 in White Castles for everyone. It was glorious! The hall smelled like White Castles for days. I got an extra burger for holding the boom mic too. :D

Definitely tasty, but when you pay over $15 for a burger, fries and a drink, and still have to wait 5+ minutes to get it, it passes more into the realm of casual dining.

We have EPL and In-N-Out locations in GA. In-N-Out I could Do-W-Out, but EPL is amazing (the chicken, soup, and steamed veggies, anyway. The other veggie sides seem to be the out-of-an-aluminum-tray variety.)

@Jevia: Same situation here. Though 5guys isn't a half-bad substitute for In-N-Out.

There was an El Pollo Loco that opened up here in N. GA a couple of months ago. However, just recently they changed the store sign to \"The Crazy Chicken\" in a crrrraaaazy font. I can't figure out why they did that. It looks so stupid now, and just doesn't feel the same. Haven't been back since.

EPL is good, but suffers from poor expansion decisions and periodic corporate meltdowns. They pretty much disappeared in the 90s, and are now back again.

Their offerings may be a bit too ethnic for the mainstream, although they are probably of better than average quality and healthfulness compared to other fast food options.

Since we're on the topic of niche Mexican fast food chains, there's El Taco Tote too. Severely overpriced ($2-$4 per taco), but good. Both EPL and ETT originiated in Mexico.

I learned a trick from Emeril one day that's working out pretty good.

1. Buy ground beef.
2. Make your burger patties.
3. Stuff the center with cheese, bacon, and jalepenos.
4. Cook, top with lettuce, mustard, whatnot, & enjoy.

Simple, inexpensive & delicious. (and you know what it's made of)

Fresh locally grown hormone free beef
Fresh local cage free chicken
Local potatoes
Local ice cream for the shakes
Wallawalla Sweet onion rings (only when in season of course, and I wouldn't have it any other way.)
Locally grown fresh berries in the milkshakes (when in season)
Tillamook cheese
Local pepper bacon
The list goes on....

They are also very environmentally responsible and socially responsible and treat their employees well.

Turkey burgers are pretty tasty when grilled outside on the propane grill. Heat the grill up to 600 degrees to clean off the previous week's cook-out and then let it cool down to 300 degreees and cook away. The wife demands a steak for her meal. We got a recipe off the internet for those Red Lobster Cheese Rolls that goes great with our cookout food. I have sworn off nasty store bought rolls.

I've never seen the appeal of In-N-Out burger. The fries are average at best and the burger is just a burnt piece of dead cow off a grill. A piece of meat that's been killed at least twice. They're not worth the wait in line. Heck, they're not worth going out of you way to get one.

Never tried In-N-Out, but I used to like Cheeburger Cheeburger in the DC 'burbs Burgers made completely to order and definitely not a Fast Food chain.
They had a location close to where is used to live and just put the local Five Guys to shame.


That being said there aren't any where I live now outside Chicago. At least none I've found. I do like Meatheads though, which I initially only wanted to try 'cause the name amused me.

It's a shame that neither the survey nor the commenters have yet mentioned Good Times. They have nice, thick burgers that beat Wendy's into the ground, and those who have tried both have compared them very favorably to the fabled In 'n Out.

Sadly, if you're not in Colorado, you've probably never even heard of them, and their 29 locations probably makes them too small for the survey to consider.

In N Out won? I know there's a cultish following but I find their burgers bland and uninteresting and usually oversalted to hell and their fries are just weird and dry. Gimme a Carl's Famous Star or a Whopper any day over In N Out. Oh, and the Bible quotes on their drink cups are a turn-off too, but I wouldn't mind if their food was better.

In-N-Out is good, really good, my personal favorite fries too. However, a lot of hole in the wall joints have better burgers.

Also, in the picture you have 4x4s which are 4 patties and 4 cheeses. That's not In-N-Outs standard order, most people get a single or double.

I can't believe that Five Guys Burgers and Fries isn't on this list. Absolutely criminal. I've tried all of the top five burgers except Whataburger, and Five Guys beats every last one of 'em. In-n-Out came the closest- theirs were very good, but I'd save Five Guys just edges them out. Five Guys has significantly better fries, too.

That cinches it, I don't trust Zagat at all. I tried In-N-Out once when I lived in Phoenix, and that was the most disgusting thing calling itself a burger I've ever eaten, and the fries were soggy and gross (which is a real feat when there's no humidity and they're not in a bag).

Anybody who thinks thousand island (or mayo, for that matter) belongs on a burger isn't someone I want the opinions of.

Both In-N-Out and Original Tommy's Hamburgers are family-owned and operated. They are not franchised nor have stockholders to answer to.

Chick-Fil-A (closest to In-N-Out except with chicken) is okay once in a while. Hard to eat there everyday if you're avoiding fried chicken filet (which is super tasty but I'm cutting back on fried food) because it's hard to find good grilled chicken.

El Pollo Loco is hit-or-miss, depending on location and time of day.

Five Guy's is okay. Got bored of it after three times.

McDonald's = Starbucks of burgers, i.e., cheap. And I don't mean inexpensive.

Yoshinoya used to be good and inexpensive. Now their quality is inconsistent (in my experience) and don't taste as good to me anymore :( I wonder how many restaurants they have. (Same goes for Flame Broiler, but I like the white meat option at Flame Broiler.)

Jack in the Box should be on the list just because many are open 24 hours :) Still go to Wendy's, at least once a week., but I no longer visit Carl's Jr. Their Famous Star are sometimes nasty--like McDonald's Big and Tasty (i.e., Big and Nasty).

I'm trying hard to avoid Taco Bell and Del Taco, mainly because their hot taco sauce contain sodium benzoate. If I succumb to my cravings then I'll go to Chipotle, which isn't exactly inexpensive.

How about Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill? Their fish tacos aren't the best, but they're not awful and are the only ones widely available :)

What's their basis for judging?! it doesn't make any sense that taco bell and pizza hut beat out Popeyes(which somehow didn't even make the list) but it's an absofucking tragedy that KFC somehow beat Popeyes. Did they even eat at these places or just count how many they drove past? And seriously why is McDonalds even on the Best burger list. @YardanCabaret: The number of votes is dependent on the number of people voting for a particular place, which is dependent on the number of locations a restaurant has, which means chains with fewer locations will get fewer votes and won't make the results. So this is really a survey of the largest fast food joints, a cheap and dirty popularity contest. It's as if a vote for prom queen were based upon how many guys had been with her.

Papa Heartburn's? That's some greasy, greasy stuff. It's cheap & easy, but just because take & bake is a little \"different\" concept I wouldn't expect to see Domino's on any \"best of\" lists.

@trustsatan: I've only had Papa Murphy's once, and I've only had it once for a reason. I agree, it probably made the list more for the concept than anything else. It can't be considered great by any stretch of the imagination.

Its ok, In-N-out isnt good anymore, they made their burgers smaller and more expensive a few years ago; the cashier was surprised I noticed (used to eat there once a week). Now if I have to shell out 10 bucks to get full, I just pay 12 and go to fatburger. Way better and less crowded.

Wow; I guess my In-And-Out experiences are apart from the norm. I went to two different ones in San Diego and wasn't impressed with either (although the milkshakes were good).


I've been to two different ones in Phoenix; wasn't impressed. I've been to one in Tucson near the El Con Mall; it was terrible.


I just don't get it.
