Wow; I guess my In-And-Out experiences are apart from the norm. I went to two different ones in San Diego and wasn't impressed with either (although the milkshakes were good).

I've been to two different ones in Phoenix; wasn't impressed. I've been to one in Tucson near the El Con Mall; it was terrible.

I just don't get it.

In-n-Out SUCKS. My God. Five Guys BLOWS THE CRAP out of In-n-out in price, taste, and "features". Five Guys gives you all the peanuts you could eat, for free, self-serve, while you wait for your burger and fries. Five Guys also lets you pile on as many toppings as you want, for free, and skip crap like lettuce that adds little flavor, just crunch in a burger meant to be chewed down. Only thing In-n-Out has on Five Guys are the shakes and that's ONLY because Five Guys doesn't make any - if Five Guys decided to start making shakes it would be freshly-made shakes damnit and not just something culled from a machine with a lever like at McDonalds.

Seriously, if Five Guys opened in SoCal then people would see why their sainthoodage of In-n-Out is entirely misguided.

I'm pretty confident that you have ever stepped into an In-N-Out burger. Or know anything about them.

In-N-Out does not even buy ground beef. They ground it themselves. Do you do that? They have outrageously stringent rules for their suppliers and select and cut all the beef at their own headquarters in Baldwin Park, California. The meat they use is better than the meat you buy for home from the supermarket.

They also freeze nothing. It is trucked daily to every restaurant. Every day. They have no microwaves. No heat lamps. Not one order is prepared until it is ordered.

I was dragged to one outside Philly several years ago - dragged because I hate fast food and really didn't want to go... little did I know that Five Guys is something special. Now there's one in Center City & I was sad to be leaving when I got a new job - until I found out it was in DC! Five Guys heaven.

Chick-Fil-A (closest to In-N-Out except with chicken) is okay once in a while. Hard to eat there everyday if you're avoiding fried chicken filet (which is super tasty but I'm cutting back on fried food) because it's hard to find good grilled chicken.

El Pollo Loco is hit-or-miss, depending on location and time of day.

Five Guy's is okay. Got bored of it after three times.

McDonald's = Starbucks of burgers, i.e., cheap. And I don't mean inexpensive.

Yoshinoya used to be good and inexpensive. Now their quality is inconsistent (in my experience) and don't taste as good to me anymore :( I wonder how many restaurants they have. (Same goes for Flame Broiler, but I like the white meat option at Flame Broiler.)

Jack in the Box should be on the list just because many are open 24 hours :) Still go to Wendy's, at least once a week., but I no longer visit Carl's Jr. Their Famous Star are sometimes nasty--like McDonald's Big and Tasty (i.e., Big and Nasty).

I'm trying hard to avoid Taco Bell and Del Taco, mainly because their hot taco sauce contain sodium benzoate. If I succumb to my cravings then I'll go to Chipotle, which isn't exactly inexpensive.

How about Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill? Their fish tacos aren't the best, but they're not awful and are the only ones widely available :)

For best results with homemade fries, they need to be blanched. That means they should be dropped into a 300 to 325F pot of oil and cooked briefly, say 2 minutes, then removed and drained. When cool and drained, fry them again until done. Blanching gelatinizes the starches on the exterior of the fries, making them crisper.

For those of you who find In-N-Out's fries to be pale and softer than what you're used to, you're right, they are, because In-N-Out uses fresh potatoes and doesn't blanch before cooking (too time consuming and messy).

If you make fries at home and want a crisper result, soak your fries for 15 mins in a bowl of cold water with a splash (1/4 c) of white vinegar. The acid retards browning of the exterior of the fries. This allows you to cook them longer/crispier, without burning their exteriors.

In-N-Out, though, was the most disgusting "burger" I've ever tasted. I had a friend from SoCal who always wanted to go there; I tried it once and couldn't finish it. And somehow the fries managed to be soggy, which is something I never experienced anywhere else before or since. After that I made him drive thru the Whataburger for me first.

Anybody who thinks thousand island (or mayo, for that matter) belongs on a burger isn't someone I want the opinions of.

Other chains only out west (which is not unusual because fast food places except for Burger King mostly started in Southern California) are Jack in the Box (not in many midwest states), Weinerschnitzel (in Texas, but not the rest of the Midwest) and Del Taco (horrible food, except for awesome fries).

And no matter what anyone tries to tell you, the original McDonald's is not in Illinois. It was owned by the McDonald brothers in San Bernardino, CA. Ray Kroc bought the name and the franchise rights from them.

And the place is ALWAYS hoppin. It's hard to find an In N Out without at least a small crowd.

Friend came out to visit from East Coast and first thing we did after leaving LAX is went to In N Out for his Double-Double Animal Style.

Every once in a while, I break my diet and head to In-N-Out. Nothing--no,nothing--beats the experience of a Double-Double with cheese and an order of freshly-cut, unfrozen french fries. Ah, hamburger bliss!

EPL is good, but suffers from poor expansion decisions and periodic corporate meltdowns. They pretty much disappeared in the 90s, and are now back again.

Their offerings may be a bit too ethnic for the mainstream, although they are probably of better than average quality and healthfulness compared to other fast food options.

Since we're on the topic of niche Mexican fast food chains, there's El Taco Tote too. Severely overpriced ($2-$4 per taco), but good. Both EPL and ETT originiated in Mexico.

@MalvaClytius: in-n-out can be expanded as much as they want. all you need to do is build a new distribution center. it's not like we've lost the ability to build a refrigerated warehouse since in-n-out opened.

i've heard that the reason they have stayed so close to home is because the owner wants it that way. allows him to have better control over quality and consistency between restaurants. i've also heard that his kids are ready to whore the chain out to the rest of america as soon as they get control.

He was paid P3500 to promote Bramley apples, but substituted them at the last minute with Granny Smith apples, demonstrating (correctly) that no one could tell the difference after cooking.

So I don't doubt that he genuinely liked the burgers, though perhaps not as enthusiastically. I'm sure you can buy his palate *up*, but you can't buy his palate *out*.

My only gripe is that they haven't opened one in Maine yet. Then again, that's probably better for my waistline.

I don't know how anyone who has ever tasted a FIve Guys (or Nathan's) burger can possibly think anything from the big three is better.

There was an El Pollo Loco that opened up here in N. GA a couple of months ago. However, just recently they changed the store sign to "The Crazy Chicken" in a crrrraaaazy font. I can't figure out why they did that. It looks so stupid now, and just doesn't feel the same. Haven't been back since.

When there's no line, I've never got my food slower than 10 minutes (and that's because I order my fries "well").

I mean, chain food is really a category of food almost on its own.

But, in my opinion, In-N-Out is definitely the best of the chains we're talking about here. Yes, it's not top-grade sirloin or anything but at least it's fresh, local, unfrozen beef. Take that for what you will, but it does make a difference.

Also, in the picture you have 4x4s which are 4 patties and 4 cheeses. That's not In-N-Outs standard order, most people get a single or double.

I hadn't been in a while (no reason to go). I suppose someone from the real company got a tip, because that's definitely not the logo they were using previously. From the listing, it actually looks like they changed the name entirely.

From reports though the Vegas and Phoenix ones don't taste quite right.

I am not a fan of their fries however. I think its because they pat them down and get rid of the oil. They are usually too dry. Love me a double double though. used to get 4x4's religiously, and have even hit up the 8x8. Could never put up the courage for more.

@Do not taunt Happy Fun King Psyz: The real In-N-Out doesn't use roles, but freshly baked buns. I hope so too, if the Geoirgia location sucks as much as you guy say, then I don't want them giving the best fast food resturaunt ever a bad name.

On a side note, is it true Carl's Jr. isn't nation wide? Someone told me they didn't have one where they lived before, I always assumed it was big like Wedny's, McDonalds, Taco Bell, and Burger King because they are just as common here in California as the ones I listed. That might explain them nto being on the list because their burgers are deffinately better than the resturaunts I listed.

In N Out won? I know there's a cultish following but I find their burgers bland and uninteresting and usually oversalted to hell and their fries are just weird and dry. Gimme a Carl's Famous Star or a Whopper any day over In N Out. Oh, and the Bible quotes on their drink cups are a turn-off too, but I wouldn't mind if their food was better.

Sadly, if you're not in Colorado, you've probably never even heard of them, and their 29 locations probably makes them too small for the survey to consider.

It's just that in the end, it's still a fast-food burger. It may be the best fast-food chain burger, but it's no Chuckbox, where the burgers are grilled over searing-hot charcoal (no really, the bricks around the grill are blackened and deformed from the heat) by a Mexican with missing teeth. The Chuckbox is a real burger. In-N-Out? Just a fast-food burger, manufactured in a factory in Southern California.

Never tried In-N-Out, but I used to like Cheeburger Cheeburger in the DC 'burbs Burgers made completely to order and definitely not a Fast Food chain.
They had a location close to where is used to live and just put the local Five Guys to shame.

That being said there aren't any where I live now outside Chicago. At least none I've found. I do like Meatheads though, which I initially only wanted to try 'cause the name amused me.

I've never seen the appeal of In-N-Out burger. The fries are average at best and the burger is just a burnt piece of dead cow off a grill. A piece of meat that's been killed at least twice. They're not worth the wait in line. Heck, they're not worth going out of you way to get one.

@wallspray: Whats wrong with Subway? I eat there maybe 2 times a month, and the food is always good, and the veggies taste fresh.

Surprised there's only 500 or so locations. oh well. I rarely do fast food with Del Taco being my exception. A bean burrito with red sauce is a perfect work lunch, and their taco nights are a great deal for my "do not cook" night a week. Fed and stuffed 2 adults and had food for lunch for just over $5 on tuesday.

I don't think the In-N-Out in Georgia is part of the same company. I remember reading that all restaurants have to be within 100 miles of a commissary (where the ingredients are all centralized), and their distribution network is nowhere near there.

The furthest east they are right now is Utah.

By the way, according to the chain's website, they only have stores in CA, AZ, NV and one in Utah.

It's not like 6,000 people rated all of the restaurants in a particular category ... the problem is that there's no way to know how people would have rated the places they haven't been, or how visiting those places might have affected their ratings of the places they have been. (Without going to Peet's, I think Starbucks is a 3. After visiting Peet's, I think they are a 3 and Starbucks is more like a 2.)

I sense the stench of favoritism, seeing as both Culver's (a Wisconsin favorite) and Five Guys aren't anywhere on the list, yet their food costs less and tastes better than any of these chains.

It will still make you obese and give you a heart attack, though.

We have EPL and In-N-Out locations in GA. In-N-Out I could Do-W-Out, but EPL is amazing (the chicken, soup, and steamed veggies, anyway. The other veggie sides seem to be the out-of-an-aluminum-tray variety.)

Turkey burgers are pretty tasty when grilled outside on the propane grill. Heat the grill up to 600 degrees to clean off the previous week's cook-out and then let it cool down to 300 degreees and cook away. The wife demands a steak for her meal. We got a recipe off the internet for those Red Lobster Cheese Rolls that goes great with our cookout food. I have sworn off nasty store bought rolls.

There's one in Georgia. Their website is as mediocre as their food.

And you can argue all you want that it has to do with the local store, but any restaurant that claims to be as amazing as In-N-Out should be consistent across the entire chain. Doesn't help that people have told me the ones here are "just as great" as the ones elsewhere.

(And they are expanding. There are now some in New England where my parents are. Where we are in NoVA naturally I can name the nearest three off the top of my head. And one is walking distance from our apartment.)

First you slice the potatoes. Then you soak them in water. Then you fry them once at a lower temperature until they turn floppy and golden. (This is the point where fry factories would ship them to stores). Then you fry them once more until they're crispy and delicious.

In college in Northern NJ, two of my film major friends were remaking a scene from Harold and Kumar. So they did a White Castle run. Everyone in the dorm heard about it, gave them money, and they ended up buying almost $500 in White Castles for everyone. It was glorious! The hall smelled like White Castles for days. I got an extra burger for holding the boom mic too. :D

Almost everyone has told me that In-N-Out is one of the best burger chain they've ever ate at. To me, it's ok. I've had better.

Maybe my apathy in In-N-Out is because I've had too many of it. I mean, I once gorged down at least 5 double-doubles in a one hour span....

They're all open until at least 2 am and they are ALWAYS packed because it's so farking delicious.

I'm used to buying actual ground beef and actual steaks. Why can't any of those big chain burger places make anything even close to resembling a burger I can make right in my own kitchen with no cooking experience whatsoever? I'll tell you why....

Because anyone with zero cooking experience can buy quality beef and smash it into a disk and cook it, and have it be juicy and delicious even without any toppings. This is not profitable for a fast food chain. Thus, you get the tiny hockey puck psuedo-burger instead.

I've lived in California for 17 years now, and I've never heard anyone say or write what you just did about In-N-Out. I'm not blasting your opinion... I'm just really surprised by the way you said it.

Example: My brother loves In-N-Out. On one trip back in 1998, he ended up getting a HORRIBLE bout of food poisoning from a burger there. Vomiting, diarrhea, the works. I thought he would have given up In-N-Out for good.

He still ended up eating there a week later, and hasn't stopped since (about once a month).

Again, I'm not criticizing you, just amazed that I've never really heard that level of hatred ("fucking terrible") leveled towards them. Here in SoCal, they've got a pretty much sainthood status.

The answer is not an accident. The notion that In-and-Out is "better" simply because they use fresh beef is a fantasy that they sell to you. Did you know that McDonald's adds beef flavoring to their french fries, for example?

On my infrequent trips to Southern California, I make it a point to visit a Tommy's and an In-n-Out at least once each. Very disappointed not to see Tommy's on the lists; perhaps Zagat needs "Regional" categories. Over/under 5000 locations seems a little arbitrary.

In N Out is mana from heaven, and it's actual beef cooked to order (open kitchen next to drive thru) as the fries are cut and fried to order they don't have the artifical golden color everyone else's processed and additive laden "fries" do.

We have In-N-Out here in the Bay Area, but I don't know how they could win best burger. I've tried them twice and I don't see what all the hype is about. They're not very good. Thin little chunk of psuedo-meat topped with the usual. Most unremarkable at best. Although they are fairly cheap.

@bananaboat: That is because In 'n Out is only in SoCal (not sure about NorCal?), Nevada, Arizona, and Utah.

@pecan 3.14159265: The reason the fries don't look cooked is because they aren't stripped of anything. They are freshly peeled every day.

Wendy's, BK and MCD as the BEST burgers? You gotta be kidding! I've never seen an In-And-Out chain.

I grew up about 45 minutes from Lake Havasu, where the first In 'n Out in Arizona was opened. I was a senior in HS. We used to drive there JUST to eat at In 'n Out (we usually drove to the London Bridge and ate 'em there).

Now that I'm in Phoenix, however, they are everywhere, yaaaaaay. SO GOOD!

Luckily they just opened a 5 guys next to my house. Still no In and Out :(
