E.U. Agrees To Universal Standard For Phone Chargers

-->Ugh, next time those snooty Europeans come over to blanket us with their Euro-gold, they'll have one more reason to be all smug and superior: ten of the world's largest telecoms have agreed to make a universal phone charger that can charge any phone sold in the European Union.

Ugh, next time those snooty Europeans come over to blanket us with their Euro-gold, they'll have one more reason to be all smug and superior: ten of the world's largest telecoms have agreed to make a universal phone charger that can charge any phone sold in the European Union.

"People will not have to throw away their charger whenever they buy a new phone," said EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen, estimating that unwanted phone accessories accounted for thousands of tonnes of waste in Europe each year.

The Commission said the agreement would involve the creation of an EU norm, and that the new generation of mobile phones would use a standard micro-USB socket to ensure compatibility.

So this is what happens when a consumer-minded regulator forces large companies to do the people's work.

At first, new phones will come bundled with the universal charger, but eventually they will be sold separately. If we're lucky and patient, the universal charger will hopefully bleed its way into the American market.

If you aren't too smart (i.e. you don't buy online) I've seen chargers go for $24.95 USD.
I don't think cellphone companies would jump on the bandwagon too fast if it meant that they would stop getting some good money from people who aren't as informed.

@Jeremy82465: To be fair, that's because your charger is HELLA generations old. You get message when it's only getting power on the Firewire pins @ 12V. My iphone 3g (not S) wouldn't charge off Firewire either and i don't think the "old" EDGE iphone charged off Firewire either.

Older iPods could still charge off firewire for a couple generations after they stopped being able to actually sync over firewire, but eventually they got rid of the dual-voltage support, presumably because they'd rather make a few people replace really old chargers than make EVERYONE pay an extra few bucks for every phone.

Also, just plug your phone into your computer to avoid that problem. Unlike motorola, iphones charge off any old USB port on a computer. I charged one today on a 2003-vintage HP box running a 3-year old version of Linux.

If you get a wall-to-USB-port adapter, that's your best bet--and make sure to get one that can put out 1A. It doesn't have to be sanctioned by Apple. Just needs to put out 1A @ 5V.

@HiPwr: Thanks.
We're much alike in goals, we'd find were we drinking together. The market solves almost any problem. The caveats are when markets are broken (unmet externalities I'd place under this category, as well as when there are distortions (too big, too powerful or too few) and for a limited set of situations where society is able to provide the optimal, efficient good (fire departments or schools, say (but not that private alternatives shouldn't exist)).
We'd probably agree to disagree whether, say, our health, finance or military systems are competitive and efficient. Or if "too big" provides real choice for consumers to act or bad actors to be slain by their own hand, as they should be. But I'd trust the rationality of millions of self-interested consumers independently making considered choices over that of either the State or quasi nation-state corporations (and so thus, I'd like to see these both made answerable to these millions of individuals).
But I think on the third round, we'd shrug and agree that its individuals that count. Not vast bureaucracies (private or public) that thwart their will. Am I right? :D

On the way to my destination I used the handy USB to mini USB cable and slowly sucked all the battery from my laptop. On the way home I discovered that the Blackberry charger already plugged into the cigarette lighter was just a mini USB and I could charge up my G1. Everyone should switch to this. Its brilliant.
@Trai_Dep: Well, what took the government so long to intervene? One is market forces which take time. The other only takes as much force as the government wants to enact. Why is it the market's fault?

You'd have to explain to me why government intervention is needed to prevent business from acting contrary to their long-term interests. I think we seriously disagree on the purpose of government. Governments shouldn't prop up failed businesses - that gets us TARP: billions of taxpayer dollars funneled to private corporations with the right lobbyists in the right places.

The reason why the GSMA was already working on this prior to any government intervention is because of cost. If a consortium of phone manufacturers can get a single build of a power adapter and manufacture billions, that's cheaper than each company developing their own. So I see this as government spending money to fix a non-issue that was already fixing itself anyway. No matter how low the costs were, it's a waste of resources.

A corporation has no incentive to do the greater good. Even when government passes laws, the corporation still has no incentive, only a detraction from doing regular business through risk of further government action. The only way to get corporations to care about the greater good is through supply and demand.

Keep worrying about that "blatant, consumer-sodomizing greed". I'll keep worrying about blatant, taxpayer-sodomizing greed.

The least gov't intervention possible is ideal. But sometimes it's needed to both prevent businesses from acting contrary to their long-term interests, or to fix anomalies - or blatant, consumer-sodomizing greed - in the market. As a last resort though.
This case is a fair reason. Coordination costs are minor but there's no incentive to do the greater good. So a little tweak (or threats of it crossing over the pond) and, like magic, businesses do the right thing.

@colorisnteverything: Nah, the voltage is the same everywhere in Europe (give or take 10 volts, which doesn't matter; Ireland went from 220 to 230 a few years back without anyone noticing, and of course the real-world voltage often moves around a few volts). All EU countries use something between 220 and 240V. Frequency is the same NEARLY everywhere. (Modern switched-mode power supplies can usually tolerate all normal frequencies, and often even both US and EU voltage)

The physical plug will be different, of course. A converter is just a few wires in an appropriately-shaped plastic thing, though, so this isn't as big a deal as all that.

And of course you could just use a charger from the country you're visiting, which is the point of this standard anyway.

He's probably referring to the Motorola Q. I have one and aside from the actual phone being a gigantic hunk of crap, the fact that I have friends at Motorola who feel sorry for me having one, the 'standard' mini-usb port has a resistor across pins 4 and 5. This means the only way to charge the phone is to use Windows drivers and plug it into your computer, or use an authorized cable. If you foolishly think, "oh I'll just take this old usb cable and plug it into my universal usb car adapter, then i can plug it into my usb ac adapter too and I'll be all set" you'd be screwed.

I can dig it if they make the standard Micro-USB. I just bought a Palm Pre and loaded up on cables and chargers for that specific type of connector. Mini-USB is good too, but it's large enough that it's starting to limit the form factors of the phones that use it. It's hard to envision a power connect that also handles data that could be much smaller than Micro-USB though, any smaller and the connection would have too high of resistance for effective conductivity. Of course, inductive charging solutions and wireless data syncing avoids this problem entirely, something else I get to experience on my Pre. If only those touchstone chargers weren't so expensive, I'd never use the port again.

@colorisnteverything: A standard for chargers isn't meant to address the variations in AC power line connections. Those differences are already well known and adapters are readily available. The biggest difference is the line voltages. But many switching mode power supplies (a charger is just a power supply, converting AC down to DC at a lower voltage) readily handle 100 to 240 volts and 50 to 60 Hz. If yours only handles one voltage, then get one of those shaver transformers with input for the other voltage (the electric power frequency doesn't matter). Chargers with either a europlug or ameriplug can use readily available adapters that people in places that use different plugs already know about.

USB devices can pull 100mA without asking but have to get the OS to turn on higher current (up to 500mA). And RIM couldn't be bothered to use a standard USB class (e.g., "I'm a USB hub!") but had to use their own, which requires installing extra drivers and makes it incompatible with some systems.

But you still can't probably charge it anywhere in the EU. The end that connects to the phone will probably be the same, but the voltage and type of plug will be different for the UK/Ireland. This concept would actually work better in the US, where all the plugs are the same. Thus, if you get a charger for a French phone, it isn't likely to work. You will need a converter and surge protector to change the voltage.
