The only way to avoid the fee? Pay at least two business days early.

When we called customer service to ask about the fee, the very nice Montesa told us that online payments took a day or to process and the 2-day period assures that it'll arrive on time. Huh? Shouldn't the due date be two days earlier in that case?

Wait. I just thought of another way to avoid the fee: you could always pay off the balance and cancel your Best Buy credit cards. Zing!

@oceanstate: normally i would agree with you however I think it's wrong to charge a fee when i'm trying to give you money. I know this is for the day it's due but what's the point of the due date then? i also tried paying my old navy bill over the phone one time, even a couple days before it was due, and was told they will charge a $10 fee for phone processing. seriously...being charged...to give them money. in what way does that ever make sense? i'm going to open a store and when someone tries to buy something, i'll tack on another $5 for the priveledge of paying me. that would never work for a store so why does it work for credit cards.

I've run into this with my credit cards, but they're not the only ones who do this. I have an auto loan through Fireside Bank and they purposely do not have an online payment system. Instead, they have a link to Western Union which wants to charge me $27 to send my payment electronically. Fireside also offers a "convenient" phone payment option that charges $10 to make a payment. The only way to avoid a fee is to mail your payment by check, but if the mail is delayed and payment is even one day late they charge a late fee and begin calling you. Yes, they start calling one day after the due date!

Yeah, this has been around for a long time. The credit card that I got in college, attached to my school's credit union (USC, in case you care) changed card management companies to IBS, and they began the whole "pay 2 days before the due date or pay a $12 fee" thing. And even that "rush" payment has to be made before 5pm ET, otherwise your payment is considered late.

On the flip side, I have an REI VISA, managed by US Bank, and any payments made before 7pm ET post the same evening. If you make the payment on a weekend on the due date, you don't get charged a late fee, but the payment won't post until the following business day. This is how business should be done.

2. they have a chart that is very clear and easy to understand on their bill pay website that tells you when your payment will clear based on what day you make it.

I realize this is common for store credit cards, though from what I recall (I bought one there YEARS AGO) it was not at all clear from the fine print. I'm hoping that's changed. I wouldn't know. When my last service plan finally expired this year (to their credit, I got at least 4 new laptops off their services plans and two full hard drive replacements) I vowed never to buy any major piece of electronics from them again.

Its worth noting that this policy has been around for quite some time. I had a laptop I purchased on a Best Buy account back in '02 and dealt with this then. I paid off this account years ago, and don't even have the card anymore. (Though I never closed the account, and they've yet to mark it inactive.)

I'm only mentioning this because I find it interesting that I've run into this with a few other companies (notably, Toyota)...and they've all since changed their systems to avoid this "fee for paying on time" thing. Probably because a LOT of people were complaining and taking their business elsewhere. Best Buy's service has long been terrible and this is yet another example of it.

This is neither outrageous nor unfair. It states it clearly on the online payment site that this is the practice ONLY for expedited payment processing; they even recommend a day to submit payments so that it will post on time. If you choose to test your luck and wait, and then get burned, that's your fault, not the credit card's. Many credit cards do this and if you are responsible in the least, this is the easiest fee to avoid by simply paying at the very least, a few days in advance.

To emulate another users post, this basically just sounds like Consumerist is having a slow day and just needed something to post.

So you cant even get in and pay it online. I have had this mysterious experience with Sears (since they changed from handling their own cards to I think Citi doing the dirty work) and Home Depot. The bottom line is as less human interaction is required to handle a payment the less it should cost. Paying online is a computerized transaction from one bank to the other and billions of those transactions happen a day for free, why should paying your bill be the exception? As for making sure it gets there on time, go charge something on that BB card and see if the purchase isnt reflected in seconds. Bottom line In this modern world of ours there is never a reason for a delay unless someone wishes one. The banks want that delay in payments for the interest accrual.

The problem is, they changed the due-date to two days earlier then it usually is, and now instead of instant processing, there's a two day delay.
@catastrophegirl - just add kittens: Yes, I was attempting to pay Chase from another bank using the Chase online banking. I can't remember the specifics, but it was within a couple of days of the due date and there was a notice of "expedited payment fee" or similar, which was insane because the money would have been transferred at the same speed as any other day.

Similarly, Countrywide charges a separate fee if you attempt to pay within x-days of due-date. Not sure when the fee kicks in, but IIRC, it's in the last 2-3 days before it goes past-due.

I don't understand why this is so shocking. My bank's online bill payment system even warns me that payments may not post for several days so to pay early. I paid my water bill online on the due date and it didn't post for several days.
You're giving the CC company authorization to withdraw the money from your account on the due date.
The $15 "rush payment" fee is likely to be an advance fee where they don't actually rush the payment processing but just credit your account prior to receiving the regular payment.

There is a set window in which they make it safe to pay. I have this card and recently noticed I was assessed some fees and my interest rate went up.

I called and was told I missed a payment in April, but paid extra the month before. Strange I thought, I KNOW I paid that. It seems my April payment was too early, they simply added it to my previous payment, instead of understanding that I was paying my next (soon to come) bill.

So, becuase I paid EARLY, I was assessed $148 in late fees and my interest rate increased to 26%. I understand confusion happens, but its not the best way to handle a consumer who is merely acting prudent and with due diligence.

After a phone call and a few transfers the fees were refunded to me and they said as a "courtesy" they would wave the $15 if I wanted to pay my bill now (in other words, they still felt I was late). My interest rate stayed higher, but the balance is nearly paid off and I no longer see myself using that card after this experience so its not a battle I will likely bother with.

The title to this story is misleading. Best Buy is not charging you anything to pay the bill on time. HSBC is doing the charging as they do with all their lines of credit (including ones used for Furniture from Mattress Warehouse for instance). I'd like to see Consumerist change the title to be more correct (less Sensationalistic also) to read 'HSBC Charges $15 to Pay Bill On Time'. Unfairly singling out Best Buy for a practice which is not theirs in the first place is not going to add to your credibility. I consider this whole story flamebait. In addition, these charges are outlined in the card holder agreement provided to each account holder. So yes let me blame the OP for not reading and blame Consumerist for being a Troll.

BofA actually has a "secret" website which will let you pay your bill and have it post same day , as long as payment is made by 12:00am - pacific time. I called customer service because my power was out and couldn't post the payment by 2pm that day and the customer service rep gave me the websites address. It works for any BofA account, I sent the tip to the consumerist like 2 years ago, and no I dont have the site bookmarked on my laptop at the moment.

I agree it's a total scam. You are paying for NOTHING. Literally, nothing. Now, if it actually REVERSED a late fee, like if you paid a couple days late. Then it would be worth something.

Let Best Buy corporate know that you won't put up with HSBC's fees and that you'll be closing the account as soon as possible. Where I work, we used to have a corporate Best Buy account. HSBC pulled all sorts of shady stuff on us. The worst: that they essentially charged us a late fee before they even mailed our first statement.

Anyway, we went to our corporate contacts at Best Buy for Business and told them that we would not do business with them as long as HSBC is handling their corporate billing. That was over a year ago. They may have since dropped HSBC for corporate accounts because the Best Buy for Business sales people have been calling me to get our business back with some sort of new account.

I love the "everyone else is doing it, so it's OK." That's B.S.! Because all banks may do it, makes all banks WRONG!

I just got a letter from Citizens Banks (Royal Bank of Scotland) stating that starting August 3, they will start charging me $30/year for overdraft "service" + a $5 fee every time I use the service + interest on the loan. I was really upset and told them I was going to close all my accounts until I discovered that all the other banks are doing the same thing: even credit unions! That still doesn't make the fees right, but now I'm not going to close my account. I'm simply turning off the over draft feature. I will make darn sure I don't over draw my account again. The problem is that now I have to spend more of my time ensuring that I don't accidentally overdraw my account and move money around to avoid this fee.

Oh, I got hit hard with this on my first HSBC payment. I hit some weird point in the billing cycle, and so got a bill Thursday with a due date of Tuesday. Of course I waited until Saturday, thinking I could set up an online account and post a payment on Monday. Nope. I ended up talking them down to a charitable $7.50 fee so that it wouldn't be late, even though they were the ones who sent the bill to me so late (and a Friday payment may not have made it under their guidelines).

Incidentally, nowhere in the bill did it say that there was a two-day buffer required.

They're not charging you a fee to pay your bill online. It's a charge if you pay your bill within 2 days of the due date online. IE - If the bill is due the 15th and you want to make your payment on the 14th or 15th you get slapped with a fee. I believe they term it a rush payment or something similar.

Other than the Best Buy branding on the card, I'm not sure how much Best Buy has to do with HSBC policies.

It's a rush payment fee. I have this card, just payed off the balance. I was dinged with a late payment fee of $30 bucks because I missed the payment date by 1 day.

So $15 fee to get it processed immediately or $30 fee because of a late payment. Yeah both suck but we signed contracts agreeing to their terms before we got these cards.

Don't get me wrong, I don't support this, but other places do this as well. You do have a choice though. 1) pay your bill at least 7 days early through the mail. 2) pay your bill at least 2 BUSINESS days early online (weekends dont count). 3) Don't use this card.
