John writes:

T-mobile recently changed some aspect of their voicemail system, which cause iPhones (and some other unlocked non T-mobile branded phones) on their network to FREAK OUT. You'd get blank text messages from the future (2012!) when people left voicemails, and calling voicemail caused a flurry of the blank texts to arrive. These were notably NOT free texts either, so you were being charged per message if you didn't have an unlimited plan. Some iPhone users on T-mobile's network e-mailed Executive Customer Service, and got a very nice phone call in response, acknowledging the problem and awarding a 1-month service credit.

The T-mo rep stated that "T-Mobile, though they do not offer the iPhone, and that they are committed to supporting users on their network who have them."

Sure enough, within a day or so, in response to the problem, a T-mobile Tier 2 service rep posted an acknowledgment of the problem in a hackintosh forum, and indicated they'd fixed the issue.

All in all, this cements my loyalty to T-mobile. Even without officially supporting a particular phone, they are willing to make accommodations to ensure the iPhone users on their network continue to enjoy good service. And, it is worth noting, can continue to do so for tens of dollar less per month than they would if they were still using a 2G iPhone on AT&T.

Supporting a phone they don't offer and awarding a service credit? Well done, T-Mobile.

(NOTE: PLEASE don't ban me for my anger; its directed at T-Mo, NOT the commenters!)
WHAT THE FRAK??? SERIOUSLY WHAT THE FREAKING FRAK???
I WAS a LOYAL 10 year T-Mobile account holder!. For the majority of that time, they took decent care of me as a customer. the last two years things just started to go to crap however and the last few months things just went off the cliff.
I have a few reasons for my anger related to this article...
During my time with T-Mo I tried using 'Non-Supported' GSM handsets and everytime I called customer care they treated me like a pariah with swine flu! "We cant help you, that is a non-supported handset". "We suggest you return that handset to where you purchased it and request your money back" "using that handset with our service will void any implied warranty from where it was purchased and the manufacturer" etc etc.
During the last few months of service with T-Mo I BEGGED them (even promised to re-up for another 2 years!) to bring over a handset from the UK T-MO. their reply? "Nope, we cant do that."
I never had a rate plan less than $75 a month for one line, had as many as three lines at one time and always paid my bill on time. They treated me like crap the last few months, REFUSED to offer anything for my loyalty and now they support the iPhone??????

what a crock of bullspit. I hope T-Mo burns in He11 and rots!
effing effers...

@BlairChalcodon: They were all technical calls except the last one, which was trying to talk my way out of an ETF. I had several issues, but the main one was how TMobile phones have trouble switching towers. I could tell you the street corners were I would drop all connectivity until I rebooted the phone. 3-5 times a day going to a from work.

I am a technical guy, and I work in a call center myself. I know what it is like being on the phone working with Customers on a daily basis. I first thought it was something that would get fixed, and I would be happy. It got frustrating when every time I called they had me do the exact same troubleshooting. Master reset on phone, reset on the tower. It's like they weren't taking any notes on my account at all. No force in the world could have persuaded those people to try something different. Oh I eventually got an answer. It was "Yes sir, you will have to reboot your phone each time you encounter the connection loss. It is normal to have to do that." Believe me, I called back several times, and talked to many supervisors after hearing that one.

I have no issues now. I emailed their Executive Customer Service (got the addy from Consumerist) and they let me out of my contract ETF free!

So yeah, not a good experience. I worked with them as long as I could. I escalated as much as I could. It clinched it in the end when they refused to do anything else for me. I got no compensation for days of outages, no offers to compensate me for any of my problems except half off on a new phone that they said would have the same issues.

They are just a big business like all the others, and will screw you if they can get away with it. It's not that I put AT&T so much above them, it's just that I can live with the problems I have with AT&T and not with TMobile.

@the bends: 100%. Not only did I received amazing service when I had to spend, approximately, an hour total (two calls) on the phone with their BlackBerry reps (most of the time taken up by my BlackBerry not cooperating with the second rep and I), when I had to drop from unlimited texts to 400 for a few months while I was having financial issues, THAT rep noticed I, at the time of the call, had already used 1700 texts so he made a note to make the switch at the start my next billing cycle, so I didn't get hit with text overage charges.

I've had nothing but good experiences with their customer service. Their phones, on the other hand...

I've always had excellent conversations with T-Mobile support. I once called them while I was black out drunk, and while I don't remember much of the conversation, the customer service rep managed to get my pay as you go phone activated and working by the end of the phone call. I'd say that's pretty impressive on their end.

Jailbreaking does not allow the phone to accept non-AT&T SIMs. It allows the phone to accept non-App Store applications.

Unlocking allows the use of non-AT&T SIMs. Many post-ZiPhone jailbroken phones were also unlocked just because the software would do both with the click of another checkbox. While your coworker may have simply said "I have a jailbroken phone" the fact that it didn't pop an "Invalid SIM" message means it was unlocked too.

@the bends: I have nothing but praise for T-Mobile. It was tragic that I had to leave them for AT&T to fully use my iPhone. Alas, they only started rolling out 3G. Here in Denver, their coverage had been fantastic (There's one dead spot I know of near my home). Not so with AT&T. Other people on the line have to say what all the time. If there were enough 3G towers/space, the iPhone wouldn't have to downshift constantly. (Recent trip to Boulder had me all the way down to GPRS before the "whats" ended). That and it's Russian roulette at my desk if I get good days of calling or bad days. Stationary!

Meanwhile, my hubby still has his T-M phone and because of that we got their @Home service. $10/mo for VOIP. Free national calling. It's awesome.

tmobile is not exceptional service but great nonetheless. Verizon is a joke and look for every way to strip some more cash from your pocket. Yes verizons network is reliable but that's also because it's an old school reliable network. What you also have to remember is that service a lot of the time also has to do with your phone. In my experiences over the years with tmobile, the better quality the phone (which of course will mean bigger price tag), the better the service. It's one of those things we deal with in a free and open market. I have had problems with tmobile before but in very limited intervals. While I was with verizon, not a month would go by without some greedy scum spewing out onto the phone bill. You want something done right, go German instead of American! Would you rather have a Mercedes or a Ford?

Guy I work with has an iphone that's jailbroken (or was...he reset it back), and to make a point to one of the supervisors who didn't believe us that it would work with a T-Mobile SIM card, we took his AT&T SIM out, then put in the SIM of a girl who had T-Mobile. I then called her phone number, and it rang on his iphone. then, just for kicks and giggles, we put my AT&T SIM card in his iPhone, and did the same thing. Then replaced his SIM card. didn't have a single problem with any of the SIM cards on his jailbroken iphone.

Why be locked into AT&T's overpriced contracts for something you will rarely need? An AT&T prepaid phone brought along with you can provide service when you are going to the boonies. My Tmobile service after taxes is $60/month with pretty much unlimited calling and data tether on my blackberry. To get anywhere near the same plan on the AT&T network is $160 a month before their fees and taxes. Regardless of AT&T's network their plans are overpriced. You can take advantage of AT&T's network without having to pay them a kings ransom by carrying a GO phone.

I remember one time, my mom was having severe difficulties with her medical insurance company, and that led to her putting her cell phone about 500 minutes over (at the time, she was staying with me, and I don't have a landline). I called T-Mobile for her to put her on a bigger plan, and they actually made it retroactive, even though doing so cost them about $200 in overage charges.

Granted, my cell phone reception isn't always the best, but I won't be switching away from T-Mobile any time soon unless I have to, because they've always treated me and my family right.

@Daniel Tucker: I've found this true to an extent. I've had an iPhone on T-Mobile since the first command line unlock hit. It's been great; standard voice plan + $5.99 TZones. They've never had a problem keeping me grandfathered in and even credited my account when the system "automatically" bumped me to the $9.99 Web To Go plan instead.

That, however, ended when my wife inherited a 2g iPhone and we tried to add even the Web To Go plan. Every CSR we've spoken with has somewhere in the conversation said "it looks like you're using an iPhone so we can only activate the $29.99 data plan for your phone" and sticks to that line despite any amount of pleading, debating, pointing out, etc.

We'll stick with TMO but ... it sure would be nice if they would charge the same for unlocked iPhone data as they do for a supported Samsung model's data.

If that was really your problem then do yourself a favor and star away from car dealerships, the TV section of any big box, and especially any swamp meet or farmers market.

Seriously, businesses sell stuff. Thats how they stay in business. If T-Mobile didn't sell phones/plans they wouldn't be a very good phone company would they?

@KenJason: That's sad to hear. I worked at a TMobile call centre up here in Canada (one of the ones that are closing) and my girlfriend does as well.

I think a lot of the problem is that certain centres don't hold themselves up to the same standards as others (which I think that along with the financial crisis is why TMobile is internalizing). Our centre is/was so good that phone dealers would actually hang up on us once they heard our repID, because they knew that we weren't going to let them screw the policy system over so they can earn commission.

Did you do any follow-ups on the reps who were not helpful? What was the nature of the problem that you had when you were phoning in. Often users can't really explain things right and it gets frustrating to the rep, which in turn makes the caller frustrated as well.

Even years ago I called to get a free new phone (which extended a contract of course.) They said they would send phone model #1234 but when it arrived it was a phone model #5678. When I called to get an RMA to send model #5678 back they asked me why I had thought I was getting model #1234 and all I had to say was "That is what the customer phone sales/service rep had told me." That alone was enough to issue an RMA- no fighting about it.

My spouse (2nd) and I recently got a deal via CostCo celluar vendor to transfer her account to TMobile to my account under both the Costco vendor promotion and my loyalty plan- free phone plus the loyalty plan plus the loyalty transfer credit. Win for Tmobile.

There have been a few times when we have gone over our minutes and a quick call to their support and an upgrade in minutes a few minutes later and we do not get any overage charges. I've had many providers for cell phones through my various jobs and none of them can begin to compare with the level of service that T-Mobile has. We will stay with T-Mobile as long as cell phones are in use. :)

So it's not about the carrier being good or bad, it's simply what towers they have in the area.

I've had good luck with T-Mobile. I had an unlocked AT&T BlackBerry 8310 that would NOT receive service books on either AT&T or T-Mobile. AT&T blew me off, despite that SIM being on the $68k/mo corp cell account and yet T-Mobile spent hours trying to troubleshoot the problem with RIM and their "Unsupported Devices Support Team" to eventually find out that the problem was with the 8310. I sent it back to where I bought it from (overstock.com, ugh) and bought an 8900 instead and have been happy since. I was very pleased with Tmo's service.

The reception, however, hasn't been the greatest. Ah well, I'll deal. :)

It all depends where you live and travel. For some people, Tmobile's coverage is fine, for others, not so much. But if you primarily stay within their strong reception areas, why pay more for another provider?

Why is this such a surprise to people? Yeah, the mobile carriers may seem evil at times, but it would not make good business sense here. #1 item on the agenda of the mobile carriers is user retention to maintain a healthy revenue stream? Why would T-Mobile want to make their users get a new phone? These days many phones are a liability because they are subsidized by the company. If the user breaks the contract then the carrier might be stuck with the bill and without the revenue. Allowing a user to use a phone that they paid for completely removes this liability and guarantees (at least makes it more likely) that the customer will keep sending money to the carrier for service.

I've only had one real gripe about T-Mobile as long as I've had to deal with them - when they transfer you, their line degrades. Today, I needed to get someone in the prepaid department for a client. Static, static, static. When they transferred me somewhere else, it got even worse to the point that we had to hang up. It's been going on for almost a year - every time you get transferred, the line craps out.

I wonder how long it's going to take for them to fix it.

I have T-mobile right now. Overall, I like T-mobile, their prices are right, and I have had good service any time I needed it. There is a good chance I will be moving from T-mobile though, as half of the city where I live now doesn't have reliable T-mobile service, and who knows how many years it will be before they have 3G service here. Frankly, those are things I care about the most. I'll probably move to Sprint, as even though they don't have as good of customer service as T-Mobile, they have 3G coverage here that covers the entire city, and unlike Verizon and AT&T, their prices are reasonable. Frankly, being a daily reader of the Consumerist, if I have a CS issue with them, I will know how to get it resolved to my satisfaction.

My father lives in small town about half an hour from a large metro area (KC metro to be specific). When he had our family on AT&T (Cingular at the time) we would get spotty reception. Even at our own home. There was no excuse for this. I had a spare trac-phone that got a better signal than my Cingular phone. After getting a run around from their terrible customer service he switched to t-mobile. He has been happy ever since.

I moved and then got my line on my fiancee's phone plane with T-mobile. There was a few problems but they got ironed out at the kiosk. I just wish tmob would roll out the 3G network where I live. If they would of had that available, hands down I would of got a G1. Now I guess I have to wait for the G2.

This is the problem with cell phones in this country. Because everyone always buys phones with a contract to get the cheap phone a lot of time people forget that they are mainly buying a service. The company will make a lot more off of you in two years after you buy the free phone than it would have made on the phone it self. Thats why they do it.

At the end of the day though this should really not surprise many. Someone was paying for a service that was working before and a change on the service provider's end caused for a glitch. They corrected their problem and made amends for their mistake. I guess the fact that this is even newsworthy is just the state of society.

@the bends: I suppose that is your experience. Mine was quite different.

During my 7 month stint with TMobile, I called their customer service and support no less than 15 times. Those level 1 techs and supervisors are idiots. If they had any customer service sense about them, my issue would have been resolved at their level.

If you go the extra mile and contact their executive customer service, they will be helpful. I don't feel it should have come to that.

it makes sense for them to support it. otherwise people will switch back to at&t if things stay broken. Although i wonder if t-mobile actively supports the iphone whether at&t can sue somehow and for some reason.

Funny. When I called them in January to cancel my T-Mobile service because my contract was up and I was switching to iPhone, the CSR first tried to sell me on the Google phone.

After I didn't bite, she explained to me that I could use an iPhone on T-Mobile's network (which, of course, wouldn't provide 3G speeds, GPS, etc.). I'd just have to buy an iPhone and get it unlocked. I told her no thanks -- but what if someone who didn't know what they were talking about would have called? "OMG, I caaaaaaan use the iPhone?!?! Thanks!"

I also at one point called and spoke with a different CSR who told me his current cell was an unlocked iPhone on the T-Mobile network.

If T-Mobile didn't have such spotty coverage in my area, I'd go back to them in a heartbeat. I got so much more for my money when I was with them in terms of plans/features, and their customer service really was first-rate. Above & beyond was the norm in my experience.
