What a great story. It's never a bad thing to take pride in your work and to have fun doing it, no matter what kind of job it is. In fact, if you don't like your job, find another one, and certainly don't take it out on your patrons.

Every chain store (fast food/grocery/retail) I worked at through high school and college always has at least one long-term super-dedicated worker like this guy. Some of burned out and bitter, but most still make an effort at the daily grind.

I worked at Dominos and there was a guy like this. One time I went to his place to help him fix his car and his apartment smelled exactly like the restaurant.

I was pretty drunk one time going through a jack in the box drive through (I wasn't driving). I ordered something that they didn't have and they didn't realize they didn't have until we got to the pickup window to pay and get our food. They simply removed it from our order without charging us for it and told us when we got up there. I was in a typical mood, remember I was drunk, and talked the manager into giving us something of equal cost for free as a way of making up for the inconvenience. In hindsight the manager probably knew I was really drunk and felt it was better to give me a free $1 item than to listen to my drunken rambling. Either way the free burger was great.
I remembered his name and asked about him the next time I was at that Jack in the box location a few months later. I found out he had been let go, it was a sad day.
Even though this really isn't relevant, it's still a cool story.

2PM to 6AM ??? ......that's like a 16 hour shift. He must make a lot of money working those kind of hours at Jack in the Box. Blake works 72 hours a week, that's 2 full time jobs. I on salary and only work 40 hours most of the time and I can't imagine what it feels like to work double the hours I'm working now?

I have worked two jobs, 10 shifts a week, most on graveyard, it's not something I did to get rich, but I sure don't miss it. I am happy with 40 normal hours a week. I sure hope they get this dude promoted to management soon or he may burn out or end up in hospital!

@exploded: It's obvious he's SERIOUS about moving up. He's probably at the point that he knows EVERY aspect about operating a location. If he's roving between stores, he may be nearing or at the level of regional manager.
@Skunky: If someone has been at a company with such high turnover, like a fast food chain has, there has to be a reason why he hasn't up.
Maybe he has just finished school and is just going full time. Still, there is more to the story as to why he's working 72 hours. Maybe it's his decision, but that's still not any way to live.

I must say I admire his dedication to the company and his occupation, even though the opportunities for advancement are kinda limited in his field.
But as long as it's what makes him happy.

I don't think you know the world of franchises. He could end up owning Jack in the Box stores or working in the corporate offices. A chain around me has been advertising a regional manager position that has a six figure salary plus full benefits. This is the type of industry is where you can really take charge and be your own boss with a little coin. I the OP passes this story to both the store owner and the Jack in the Box corporate offices.

@nakedscience: The people who own the McD's franchise in my hometown are some of the wealthiest people around. Super nice, but with a giant house with a pool with a rock waterfall and everything.

Maybe Blake works 72 hours a week because he makes far less than people with typical office jobs...so maybe he breaks even by working 72 hours a week?
@pecan 3.14159265: In my experience, the more hours you work, the higher the comparable value of your income because the less time you have to spend it. When I was working 60 hour weeks, I banked a lot of my income because I didn't have time to go to the movies, play golf, etc.
BTW: 60 hours a week nearly killed me. I can't imagine 72. Blake owns me.

@pecan 3.14159265: Well you never know, he may just be one of those people who's lives revolve around their job. His just happens to be working at JITB. When I bartended I was working far more than 40 hours a week, I did it because I enjoyed it. And the money wasn't bad either. :)

@nakedscience: I worked at JBX one summer during college and the pay was only slightly above minimum wage. I did get an extra $0.30 an hour for having attended college, though. I'm not sure if that was a corporate policy or just the manager taking pity on me.
My parents live down the street from a fellow who runs several JBXes (Jacks-In-the-Box?) and he seems to do ok finacially, though he has enough horror stories to scare me away from ever contemplating it as a career.

(for an extra charge)\" line and the fact that he hands out a business-card type thing to customers who \"follow him around\" make anyone else think he's making a bit on the side selling something other than burgers? I think something like this happened at KFC a few years ago, if you asked for \"Extra Biscuits\" or the like, until a family who wanted more biscuits ended up with some weed in their order

You know what, this guy will keep busting his hump and end up either running a region or owning a lot of stores.
Possibly corporate level and when he can slow down to have a family his kids will only know dad pulls a mill+ a year and they love life.
I work at a car dealer where the now GM and former GM (who went to a brand new Mercedes store to GM) both started as friggin lot porters. 40 years later and they pull 6 figures up from minimum wage.

I've noticed several people commenting on Blake's number of hours. I've known some JITB insiders and I can assure you that if Blake is an Assistant Manager or Store Manager (not that hard to get), he is making well over $50K/year and possibly closer to 75 with that many years of experience.
However, they do run managers into the ground and work them to the bone. Managers and Assistant Managers are salaried (exempt) so they can be called upon to work tons of hours without making more money. It's not unusual to get a phone call at the end of a double shift to inform you that your restaurant is now 24 hours.. and guess who's working the graveyard shift if you can't get any of your hourly employees to come in?

I admire people like Blake who enjoy their job. The reality is this is the guy who is going to get let go or fired because of crappy management or simple cost cutting. In the meantime, I hope his fan club enjoys his service. I know I would. The good news is people like Blake won't stay unemployed very long and he will eventually have job loyalty to another company which could be used for the future employer's advantage. Either way, Blake wins.

Spongebob is the most awesome fry cook under the sea, but he is never going to get promoted because he's too damn useful at his current position, and greedy Mr. Krabs is not interested in sharing the wealth that Spongebob makes him. I have mixed feelings about this. There are positive aspects to this, but part of me wonders what this young man could accomplish with a bit of guidence. If those hours are typical for him, I can't help but wonder where he would be if there had been someone in his life telling him that he should devote that enormous effort to somthing else. It seems like he is hard working, loyal, and has expressed some ambition. I'm not sure I would hire someone into a corporate management position based just on that. Even if he has all the skills, the fact that he is attempting to take the \"path of greatest\" resistance (working at jack-in-the-box for 8 years hoping to break into corp mgt) says somthing about him that I would have to understand before even thinking of putting him into a real management position. He would probably be great at running a few locations, but running a location and playing a part in running the company are totally differant, and involve totally differant skill sets. Someone should have realized what this guy was bringing to the table and mentored him. Have to wonder what makes him tick.

Unless Blake is an exempt, salaried worker, it has always been my understanding that Texas has regulations that are designed to prevent an employer from working someone seven straight days a week--whether the employee wishes to do so or not.
This may be little enforced, but it supposedly is on the books in the Lone Star State.
I suppose all someone needs to do is find out where to file the greivance.
@trujunglist: Not necessarily; most fast-food joints are owned by the same entity, which means that it shouldn't matter if he works two different locations--it's still the same employer.
If there is someone here totally familiar with Texas labor laws/regulations, please chime in and tell us if this is correct or not. I personally know employers in the state who swear to me it is, but I cannot find a cite as reference.

I can see the commercials now (please pay me for this idea JITB.. i'll be by the corporate headquarters tomorrow for my check): Jack finds out he has a long lost son, and this guy is it! He even has the birthmark (tattoo) to prove that he is Jack's son! They have a reunion, discuss the value menu or latest crazy new food they have, and then break down crying or something. Man, that'd be hilarious! I bet you this guy has enough personality and determination to crap out 4 of those Jack commercials in just a few hours! He'll be busting Jack's ball for being so lazy

I go to the Corinth JITB frequently. Perhaps one day I'll have the pleasure of meeting the \"Legend\". I do worry about his hours but we don't know his story so I can't pass judgement. At some point he will top out on salary though and I would imagine that's already happened over his 8 year tenure.
I remember working at Whataburger in my teenage years. I still remember it fondly. In fact the first true gentleman I ever recall meeting was the manager there. He was so kind. He mad me look forward to wearing that damn brown polyester uniform that you could never get the smell out of.
Hey, he's passionate at what he does and he's loyal to his company. i just hope Jack in the Box shows him the same amount of respect and loyalty.
